Near the end, Amy asks the Doctor "So you have enemies then?". This is the first part of a famous quote by Winston Churchill: "So, you have enemies? then. Good. That means that you stood up for something, once in your life".
The Dalek poster that declares "Victory!" used in this episode also exists.
This is also the first time since Classic Who the Daleks are not in flight.

"I am The Doctor! And you are The Dalek's!"
I find it hilarious when the Doctor just starts beating the shit out of the Dalek. Most of the time, the 11th Doctor has goofy, child like personality.
Here though we see his dark side and how much he hates the Dalek's. Reminds me of the 9th Doctor. Great bit of acting from Matt Smith.

The "new paradigm" Daleks were introduced specifically to sell more toys thanks to their bright kid-appeal colors (they had them in shops within days of this episode airing) but the fans utterly hated them. Dr Who Magazine reported receiving letters to the editor with a ratio of a thousand to one against them, and the toys sat on shelves while the traditional Daleks kept selling. The show would end up reversing course as fast as the arrival and end of New Coke in the 80s.

I do think though had the Doctor had not intervened many more people would had been killed because Daleks don't spare lives they would be looking for a purpose with the humans when that purpose has concluded the humans would had all been killed I think.
But yeah I agree the Doctor should had played it cool and let the Daleks had think into fooling him then no one would had been killed but for I suppose they had too for drama for the story I suppose.

The scene when the Dalek announces "I am Your Soldier!" Is a callback to The Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton's) first story "The Power of the Daleks" when The Second Doctor and his companions Ben and Polly were in a similar situation on a colony planet where the Daleks were pretending and passing themselves on as servants to the humans and said similar to this episode but instead of soldier it was "I am Your Servant!"
When The Doctor declares "The final end!" which is another callback to the Second Doctor in "The Evil of the Daleks" when it was thought at the time that it really was the final end of the Daleks.

The new paradigm Daleks had two problems. One being their designs which didn't go over well with fans. Colors too overly bright and the material didn't even look metal like the regular Daleks did. Honestly with the projenetor being gold, I think they would've looked better if they were gold in design. The second issue was that they didn't do anything. By the time the show just got rid of them and went back to bronze Daleks, the paradigm Daleks I'm pretty sure had an on screen kill count of 3 if you count the regular Daleks, and zero if you don't. Sure, they also take down two of the planes here, but on screen it was the ship's lasers that destroyed them. They introduced this whole new group of Daleks with named ranks and designations, and that was never explored. Heck, a fan made Daleks animation series "The Dalek that Time Forgot" did a better job exploring the workings of the new paradigm Daleks than the show did.

I love this episode! I loved The Doctor being able to physically assault a Dalek, must've been great for him as he'd have so much pent-up aggression towards them.
Even when I was a kid I hated the paradigm Daleks, just because solid bright colours on Daleks just don't do it for me. I much prefer the bronze Daleks with the occasional coloured Dalek (i.e. black/Dalek Sec)

Yeah, good premise but not too great as a whole IMO though partly redeemed by moments/nods.
    - the call signs "Broadsword" and "Danny Boy" are nods to the cracking WWII movie "Where Eagles Dare" (starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood among others)
    - the voice of "Danny Boy" is Mark Gatiss, who wrote the episode
    - Dr Bracewell is from Paisley (Steven Moffat's hometown), which does indeed have a very fine abbey
    - "Positronic brains" like his have a long history in 'Doctor Who' and science fiction in general (back to slightly before the episode's set in fact). Data from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" had one too.
And as any sane person that's had the pleasure will attest, Jammie Dodgers aren't just _a_ biscuit, they are, if not the King, at least in the immediate Royal Family, of biscuits :).

Yeah this episode isn't the one of the best and is agreed among fans, it's got moments but that's about it. Apparently this episode's script didn't get much revision while in production, they rushed it through because they spent more time working on the 2-part story with the Weeping Angels, which compared to this episode, is a much better story.

This episode deliberatley took a lot of themes from the second doctor's debut story 'The power of the daleks' by having the daleks pretend to be good and only the new doctor knows there really evil. Even the dalek's saying 'I am your soldier' is meant to be similar to 'I am your servant' from power of the daleks. And the doctor saying this was 'the final end' to the daleks was a subtle reference to 'the evil of the daleks' since the second doctor says that line too

  • @andrewroberts299
    @andrewroberts299 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

When I saw this on first transmission there were many similarities I noticed to Patrick Troughton’s first Doctor story, The Power of the Daleks, where the Daleks lie and worm their way in to eventually overtake their ‘masters.’ Gatiss even changed the wording from Troughton’s Dalek when he said, “I am your servant,” to “I am your soldier,” so 0 out of 10 for originality there.
The new coloured/different sized Daleks looked ridiculous, and to this day I still can’t believe that Moffat thought changing them was a good idea. For me, it was all very below average, and not a great Dalek story to give Smith his first encounter with them.

  • @TheWhovinerd-1963

I absolutely love this episode. I’ve always had a soft spot for it.
Studying WW2 was one of my favourite topics growing up in high school so anytime the show visits it I am immediately hooked.
I also love the Daleks here in this episode because they are far more cunning and scheming like they were in classic who. I also think the Progenitor Device was a genius idea of how to bring the species back. The paradigm are also by far my favourite Dalek design. The bright colours are actually part of Dalek culture. The Daleks have always used colour to establish rank.
I know the ending is a bit cheesy with Bracewell but I love it. I love when Doctor who isn’t afraid to just have fun. Xx

“Well, I like the white one.” Same. 😅 The red and blue looked better in Series 7, though. The thumbnail for this video summarized my reaction in 2010. Started off good, loved the Bracewell robot twist, then became a toy commercial to collect them all. Thankfully, this was not the main direction for the Daleks going forward as I like the usual design. (Brittany’s caught up, before anyone says “Spoilers!”)
Really like how you picked up on the compassion/grief dynamic between Amy and the Doctor. Never noticed that before watching these reacts.

It's an ok episode. For the time period sure to go to the past. To me the oh he is a bomb but oh the humanity side. I always find the show humanity nonsense emotional moments cheap, to just be cheesy and stupid.
Amy had her moments. I can't remember why like Donna she just doesn't see/remnember things. I don't remember it being on the same scale as the beetle Donna had to deal with.
Trying to remember the many things she does as I remember bits and pieces of S5+. Key moments not a lot. A few episodes balance her, the Doctor and Rory in their way like Rose, Doctor and Mickey.
Dalek's serving tea/being not soldiers immediately is definitely something but they didn't last long of course.
To get through to people sure they need some convincing that makes sense but any other way to get them convinced instead though but for a bomb in a person like come on its weak writing.
Even more than those scenes can offer usually as they have a place hut here it's just an excuse you can't show how human you are to reverse a timer of a bomb and fight back it's just weak.
To take their mind off it while the Doctor solves the technical issue sure that makes sense but the main way to solve it that's just trying to be different but its not exciting.
The Dalek designs are fair. The Jammy Dodger bit is funny why wouldn't you use a biscuit that looks like a red button to fool them. XD
It's a Dalek episode that exists.
I am not a Dalek/Cyberman fan but even I think this episode is weird compared to the others or those coming up.

Everytime I ask someone in my family if they want a cup of tea (I am British, so this is daily) I usually ask them in a Dalek voice. It has got to the point that they don't even question it anymore.
But the colourd Daleks were a bit controversial at the time. You have obviously noticed by now that they don't stick around for very long haha. But they are a refrence to the colours of the Daleks in the non canon Doctor Who movies from the 1960's.

Warching this and realising that it's bot quite as bad as I remember. But glad you picked up on some of the things like the whole Danny boy in space thing et al. Those are the bits that really turned me off the Moffatt era.

Oh, so you're fully caught-up on the Patreon if that's the latest episode you've reached. There's nothing anyone can spoil you on then about NuWho ☺

Well, nothing other than information that hasn't been included in the official trailers for the upcoming seasons like cast additions, leaks, etc.

@@BritanyBinges I stay away from that stuff as much as I can. The BBC has a habit of spoiling the entire season storyline in their trailers.

The "OI! Churchill!" line is a joke line that was used in a car insurance series of ads with an animated Bulldog called that.

What copyright issues when so many are not doing this?

    • @BritanyBinges

I've already made videos and community posts about the copyright issues. I've also explained them in previous comments. If you really care to know, go find the community posts about my Planet of the Dead reaction that never got past the copyright block after like 12 rounds of edits.
if you think other reactors aren't experiencing copyright issues, you're not paying close enough attention. Every single reactor experiences a lot of copyright issues.

This is a strange one. I think the premise was very interesting but some of the scenes, the planes, the colourful Daleks, I really did not like. I feel the first half of the episode is good.

Probably the weakest episode of S5, but I don't hate it.
I think most of the things you weren't keen on were the same things I wasn't exactly sold on.
I think exploring how corrupted from the original concept of the Daleks they had become over the course of NuWho was an interesting thing to explore, I'm just not sure about the execution here.
I don't completely hate the new paradigm either - I was fine with making them more physically imposing, and think if they'd just made them metallic then they'd have probably been recieved better. Bit of a missed opportunity to not show the roles each one had in action, nor the swappable weapons they'd all been designed with.
Ah well, a fantastic 2-parter up next. Looking forward to that.

Yeah, I didn't hate it. It just wasn't great either. It's a completely middle of the road episode for me.

I think this is possibly the weakest episode this series, which is a shame what with it being a dalek episode, but, as I'm sure you've already found out, things get much better from the next episode.

This episode had a lot of sound and fury that could have led somewhere but fizzled out. I am unsure if the disconnect was between the writer and director or the show-runner was unclear in what he was searching for in this episode, the Actors slayed the material given.
It is a fine episode, I am convinced the infinity saga with marvel played a role in the color scheme of the Daleks.... it was my own personal head cannon at the time..... hahaha

To me it was just your typical Mark Gatiss episode. I like The Unquiet Dead but pretty much everything else he did on DW always missed the mark in my opinion.
