I was the electrician working for Buena Vista Construction in charge of ride and show control when we demoed the original ride and installed the new version. That upstairs area was my office and cable storage during the renovation. I hated tearing out the old stuff (especially Figment) but got a pair of the Dreamfinder's binoculars before I left.

As good as the original ride was the upper floor was the best part of the entire experience if not the best part in all of WDW. It wasn't just a playground or fun house as others have mentioned. It was nothing short of a magic house. I visited it every year in the 80s so I remember it well.

"Have they gotten rid of the playground that so many people loved and cherished?"

I was just there recently in June. The current version of Imageworks wasn't nearly as much fun as it was when I first visited EPCOT in 1996. I remember walking thru the Rainbow Tunnel many times and playing on the musical steps that followed. I wish that they could have brought the Rainbow Tunnel down to be part of the current version of Imageworks- that would've made it more fun.

I always say my childhood is up there! I'm so sad they are opening this back up to DVC members only. It must be nice to be rich!

They'll waste money building Avatar land, but they won't fix the Yeti, or reopen this.

the turned it into a lame lounge and sealed it up there is vents you can see beyond the false wall now though if you brought a fiber optic camera in you could shove it into the vent and see what is back there now the sign is still there the rest is hard to see.

I missed that playground. As a kid I would jump off the ride once it reached unload and just bolt to the playground leaving my parents behind.

As much as I love these... I never want to see you banned again lol. So glad to see you back in the park; it's a well deserved "welcome home". Have fun :) !

You know, I've been to EPCOT probably a dozen times and I NEVER knew this area existed.

The fabled 2nd floor was my main hangout through the several blissful trips I took to JOURNEY & the park. I too remember the 'candy / new car' smell but then the whole building was new, and seemed it. A lot of the interior was pastel colored (i.e. pinks / purples) and seemed to smell like cotton or grape candy as a result. A major head trip. I too spent a good many meditative moments inside the Rainbow Corridor, and would like one for my house -- it should be said, though, that with a little effort today's modern electronics could duplicate its effect, and then some, in most public spaces. Let's hope we see its like soon.

I was at Epcot in 1987. I was 11 years old. Those were great times. I wish they would have kept the rainbow light tunnel working. That's the only time I ever walked under a rainbow that's actually a tunnel.

At least when you explored it back then it was mostly still in tact. Based on other more recent videos I've seen, they've removed the tunnel and just use the area for storage for the DVC lounge. A lot of the signage is still up though.
