"it's a hellava thing killing man, you take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have"... One of the many awesome lines in this movie... Mr. Eastwood, you are one of the last real deals.

Little Bill “I don’t deserve this.” Munny “Deserve”s got nothing to do with it.” Little Bill “I’ll see you in hell”. Munny “yea”. Cocks the rifle. Boom. Wow. That’s badass western.

While some would disagree, it ended the only way it could.
For me, the greatest lines from this movie, are, "Hell of a thing to kill a man.
You take away everything he has, and everything he ever will have."
"But I guess he had it coming?" "We've all got it coming, kid".

    • @HopliteWarlord
      @HopliteWarlord 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The other great line was:
Lil Bob:"You just shot an unarmed man"
Will: "Well, he shoulda armed himself if he's gonna decorate his saloon with my friend"

What I liked about this film is even though it was violent, it did not glorify violence. It showed the devastation it wreaks on both others, and even on the person who commits it; like after the kid killed that guy in the shit-house, and how his conscience plagued him for it.

black bird - Being a " gunman", or hired killer , is like being an athlete . You have to constantly hone your skills . You can`t be out of the game for 10 years and then jump right back at it . It would be impossible for a reformed gun fighter who had been out of action for 10 years or so , to come out of retirement , and kill all his opponents in the saloon , as William Munney did . Was he mentally tougher than his opponents? Yes , but it wouldn`t have been enough . ( Compare Unforgiven to The Outlaw Josey Wales . That character was in action for years . He wasn`t retired , He wasn`t reformed . He was believable , even when he did unbelievable things . )

Everyone will have an opinion about their favorite Western and there are certainly some very good ones. Over my long life I’ve seen my share of them and I feel that ‘Unforgiven’ is one of the best. When I was a young boy and before any Clint Eastwood movies, two Westerns that made a huge impression on me were ‘High Noon’ and ‘Shane’. These are two classic Westerns that have stood up well to the test of time. If you haven’t seen them you should and if you have seen them, why not watch them again. “Shane, come back”. “Come back Shane”. The little boy calls to his hero to come back.

Pale Rider is better than Shane. If nothing else Clint did not wear that ridiculous outfit that shorty wore. Not that Shane is bad, just that Alan Lad as the lead was a silly choice, even barring those clothes.
High Noon does not have those problems. Its great. Its even a bit better than High Noon on a Moon AKA, Outland.

Just recently watched the movie again and really enjoyed the experience. The character played by Richard Harris is called ‘English Bob’ not ‘British Bob’ as Eastwood states in this interview. Gene Hackman’s character ‘Little Bill Dagget’ has a sadistic streak in him and displays it in his beating of English Bob, and William Munny and his eventual beating and killing of Morgan Freeman’s character. He believed he was not doing anything wrong in his treatment of “assassins’ and those men of that type. English Bob got the special treatment from Little Bill, not so much as for violating the no guns in town ordinance as for Bill’s low distain of Bob’s character and the reason that brought him to ‘Big Whisky’.

He wasn't really a bad guy just someone who was trying to keep the peace but used questionable methods. He never intended to kill Freeman's character and apart from that accidental death didnt actually kill anyone. Anyway this film along with the Leone/Eastwood westerns are the best westerns ever made.

Little Bill was not a one dimensional villain, and William Munny was not a one dimensional hero...but the villain-hero dynamic was still very much a part of the film. Here's the crucial detail that preserves that dynamic:
Munny was haunted by the pain he caused. Little Bill took pleasure from it. Remorse vs no remorse.

I Love Clint Eastwood and his Movies but In the Unforgiven he should have been a More of a Character that was kick ass from the Get Go..... I was Disappointed in this Movie for that reason, Gene's character made a fool out of Clint's character But it was too late for Clint's Character to redeem himself for me. Clint should have never Played a Wimpy Character in a Western.

Clint is such a great director with award winning films that show a lot of restraint - never mushy and over the top. Superb movies. I just wish his politics were on the right side (Dem not Rep), that he was not a supporter of the NRA which is a worthless organization that has failed to adequately control guns, and that he had not tried to screw over Sandra Locke. To me, that was the worst thing he ever did and has stained his image. He tried to break her career and mind. Shameful.

The great thing about Unforgiven is played out in the eyes of the writer character, in my opinion. It starts out with the writer hero worshiping who he thought was a heroic gun slinger, English Bob. Then later a much more authentic version of a gunslinger, Little Bill... and finally the real thing, someone so evil his actions washed away all illusion of hero worship and fantasy, Mummy. This is my all time favorite movie because of that.

Loyalty, dedication, decency, equity, compassion, empathy, selflessness, bravery, honor, shameful, regretful. Reading through the comments I'd swear people saw a different version. The only one that comes close to having the level of "good" qualities that Will Munney had was the victim and the little cowboys. Little Bill was the total opposite of "good". Disloyal, selfish, mean, heartless, honorless, cowardice, authoritarian, sexist, violent, cruel, murderous. Little Bill was the ultimate bad guy. His so called "justice" was cruel. Will's "justice" was objective and pure with a sprinkle of compassion for the Cowboys. The kid and the writer glorified violence. The writer never learned this error. The kid, the "bad guy", did learn, the hard way. Delilah was angry about her life of patriarchy and was blinded by her anger. Ned's loyalty went only so far, with his wife and with Will. English Bob was a pompous fraud.
Yes. The former outlaw turned devoted husband was the hero. The lifelong lawman was the bad guy.

I might have reasonably hoped that Eastwood would have had something more to say about this masterpiece of film making other than just stating the obvious. Yeh, LIttle Bill saw himself as a good guy. What else is new? How about talking a bit about the Jewish novelist? Why make him appear so stereotypically semitic in the most craven way possible? He looks like the tailor in 'Fiddler on the Roof'. Why did Eastwood want that character to appear so Jewish?

  • @KajiCarson
