  • Introducing Proba-B, probability sequencer oscillator for Korg NTS-1.
    ** EDIT 28/5/2022 - Version 2.0 available
    This Oscillator is free. Download link (version 2.1 since 17/7/2022):
    github.com/twe...
    (Follow me on twitter: / tweeeeeak )
    Proba-B is a sequencer based oscillator. Use the built-in arpeggiator or record a step sequence, from 1 to 64 steps (default is 8 steps).
    Then assign probability values to each step, for step mute, transpose and shape change.
    The oscillator waveshape itself is a triangle waveform, with wave folding (shape parameter) and frequency modulation (alt parameter).
    Works great with delay effects.
    Extra features include: time division and transpose, with auto minor to major scale converter.
    It can become quite complicated, but remember that you can simply start by using the arpeggiator, and start setting some probability values for each step.
    To understand how it works you really need to read the manual, or watch the complete video, otherwise it may become confusing. There is also a quick reference sheet (github.com/twe...) that is a must to be able to work with the multiple parameters this oscillator offers.
    Below are direct times to this video explanations:
    04:15 - Intro and waveform, wavefolding and frequency modulation
    05:57 - Probability sequencer and parameters 1-3: mute, transpose and shape change
    10:58 - Parameter 4: Octave and slide
    12:45 - Parameters 5 and 6 introduction: value and function
    13:29 - Function 1: Step sequencer
    17:40 - Function 2: Restart step
    18:52 - Function 3: Sequencer length (number of steps)
    20:10 - Function 4: Multi-step edit
    20:40 - Function 5: Time division
    21:52 - Function 6: Transpose On/Off
    23:42 - Function 7: Transpose Min to Maj On/Off
    24:09 - Outro and jam from scratch
    Quick reference sheet:
    github.com/twe...
    Detailed instructions (if you prefer reading, or for reference):

    Please let me know what you think and give any suggestions you like.
    Enjoy!

    Even just by adding a 64 step sequencer you've already done more than Korg has on almost every synth they've put out. Not to mention all the other things. Very nice!

      Hi. Thanks for your comment. You can search the official korg logue unit index. I personally enjoy the corrosion effect, though it's heavy on the nts cpu. Also check the FM64 Osc, which is not on that list. It's an FM synth that can load DX7 patches. Cheers

    • @tweeeeeak228
      @tweeeeeak228  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@_DRMR_ it's basically just a matter of keeping track of what the user does. If parameter 5 is set to 65, activate record mode. When the user plays a note, if record is on, save note in next slot. If play mode ia on, replace the note with the next note. The sequencer is just an array of notes.

    • @_DRMR_
      @_DRMR_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tweeeeeak228 I guess that makes sense. The whole state of the "sequencer" is evaluated at every pass and cycled with every note-press, right? (the arp just makes it easier to cycle since it does the note-presses for you)

    • @tweeeeeak228
      @tweeeeeak228  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Wes Jensen you can install it on the minilogue, but it will act strange. Since the minilogue has 4 voices, each voice will run a different instance of the Proba-B osc, and randomizations will be different for each. Maybe in unison or mono modes it works ok. Try it out and let me know, if you wish.

    Thank you for providing a great oscillator !
    With nts-1, mobile battery, headphone and proba-B, I'll be forever addicted and forget about time.
    The instability of the nts1 ribbon keyboard when typing a sequence is disappointing...
    I pray for future consideration.
    Thank you.

    • @tweeeeeak228
      @tweeeeeak228  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you @toomuchblues. I have the same frustration as you regarding the instability of the ribbon, and just as I write I'm thinking if it would be nice to have an option to not automatically advance one step, when recording a sequence. This way you would have to manually set the step number you want to record for every step, but you would able to correct the current step more easily. What do you think?

    • @toomuchblues
      @toomuchblues 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tweeeeeak228
      I think that option is very good! I don't feel much stress with a short sequence like 4 steps, but it is very effective when creating a long sequence. If you complete it, I would love to try it.
      Now I want you to consider another additional function.
      I like the slot selection feature of your vbass (parameter 6). If proba-B has it, I can play while switching between multiple sequences. Simultaneous playback of all sequences at Value 4 seems to be interesting. Please try to consider it.
      Thank you

    Question to any NTS-1 users/fans reading this. I've posted the same query on Free Beat's channel.
    Maybe you could tell me what's so special about the NTS-1. I have one, and I've built it. Everyone everywhere raves about it. I still don't know why.
    1) it's digital, yet all of the dweebs who usually wet themselves over analogue gear love it. Why?
    2) the fact that it can't run on batteries, when pretty much anything else of the same size - including Volcas and Pocket Operators - can is a pain in the arse. Having to drag around a USB power pack that's bigger than the synth itself? No thanks.
    3) there's no information available from Korg about exactly how third-party modifications work, or are added to the NTS-1, or what effect they have on the information that comes stored on the NTS-1. How are people learning this stuff for themselves? Guesswork? Previous experience with other synths that actually have useful manuals?
    4) there's no explanation in the grim one-page "manual" as to what things such as "AHR" and "AR" are. As for the "ASDR" envelope, this appears to have controls for attack and release, but nothing is listed for decay or sustain.
    Really, what is so special about it? The fact that it's cheap? Is that it?

    • @shannonia81
      @shannonia81 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it the biggest and the best? Certainly not. Can you make great sounds with it? Absolutely. Speaking for myself, I like that it's small because I have limited space. And I guess some people are impressed by what such a small thing can do.

I understand that the probability works and it affects the correct step, but instead of muting it, it makes this 'beep' sound
    Any idea? Thanks

      Soooo... Thanks to your oscillator, which I really wanted to try, I discovered that something which I installed previously had done something bad, in fact I factory reset my nts, installed only your oscillator and it works without any issue at all. So it's a double thank you!

    • @tweeeeeak228
      @tweeeeeak228  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use the OPEN envelope, or long release, you may get clicks on muted steps. Try using the drone mode which is made just for that: parameter 4 all the way up to 22.

  • @carnmarth334
    @carnmarth334 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've never added any third-party stuff to the NTS-1. If you add Proba-B, does this displace something else that comes as standard in the NTS-1, to make room?

    • @tweeeeeak228
      @tweeeeeak228  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you never added any OSCs, you have plenty of room to add the Proba-B OSC. From the default OSCs of the NTS, only WAVES uses a user slot, and it's the only one you have to be careful not to delete, but if you do there should be a way to recover it.
