By 1964, most players were old, past their primes or retired. He had no one to take their places and the team never recovered with his guidance. From that point until his nephew, the other 50% owner, forced him from day to day team operations after the '78 season, they were the worst team in the NFL. Most of his drafts were much, much worse than Gettleman's. After "The Fumble", the Giants were the laughingstock of the entire sports world. At that time, he had just led the Giants to two championship games over the last 3 seasons, winning one and losing the other in OT. You think they should've fired him? Landry moved his family to Texas and was out of football for a year. He was going to work in private business. Losing Belichick was George Young's fault.

No, his father Tim was one of the fathers of the NFL and had final say almost up to his death in 1959. His brother Jack assisted him and represented the team at league meetings until 1964. Wellington tried to work with the league, but was known for prolonging a player's strike while his team sank to the bottom of the NFL.
