    If you could have listed the pads in the description in the same order that you reviewed them, it would be a lot easier for me (and others) to get the brand and model of the pads, as you go through them.

    Actually, the closed cell foam pad inflates and deflates the quickest. :-p

  • @terpdx
    @terpdx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I can't emphasize enough how important it is to buy a quality sleeping pad. I tried saving a few bucks by getting a cheap one and it ruined my sleep. The pad would slowly deflate over the course of the night and I'd wake up on the cold ground, feeling every acorn and rock poking into my back. Ruined the entire following day due to fatigue and soreness. I probably pack more sleeping gear than the typical backpacker these days as my quality of sleep is critical to how I perform the next day. Don't skimp on the sleeping pads! Buy once, cry once.

      I agree, it's definitely worth it to carry a little more weight and spend a little more for comfort, you're only on it for hours every day!

      oh I've cried twice - once the rookie UL in me didn't carry a pad & cut a 3 night trip to 2 nights fast 😭 and then brought my ridgerest & while not horrible, finally giving up being stubborn & looking for an air pad (as I found out the classic Thermorest air pad is bulky & heavy!)

    I keep seeing reviews for all these new sleeping pads and thinking "Hmm maybe my 10 year old Exped Synmat isn't so great". But I tried it a few weeks back out in the forest at 2°c and it was still amazing! Plus the Schnozzel bag for inflating is the original and best in my opinion, as it is also a dry bag.

      Hey Shaun! I love the Synmat and good point, some times we just don't need another one if one is working well for us.

    I wish there were more reviews for car/tent camp. I’m tempted about the inflatable ones but the close cell are probably more durable. Unfortunately everything I see these days is geared for backpacking and at 65 I no longer can do it but I enjoy tent camping for 2-3 weeks at a time thus needing a good pad. Good video though.

      The better quality thermarest inflatable pads seems to be very durable. I've had a few for over 20 years. The cheaper lightweight ones I 've also bought seem. to burst

    • @SurvivalSchoolHouse
      @SurvivalSchoolHouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Exped and Thermarest are great inflatables however, if you feel good with memory foam on a cot (which I have seen many) I would get 2 and double the thickness. Sorry I missed your comment, let me know how it goes!

    I'm glad I came across this video, I'm also a side sleeper. I have a S2S Ultralight and the Exped DownMat Lite 5 LW, and totally agree they are the most comfortable for side sleepers. If I went back with knowledge I would get the S2S Comfort Light Insulated or Exped SynmatHL Winter MW, just for the comfort and weight to warmth ratio. Also the tip about using the foam mat on top of your pad really does help, I've tried it with the S2S Ultralight.

    Not sure how you manage to keep pads for 5 years or better.. I've bought cheap and I've bought expensive and I've also used in conjunction with foam and for some reason the best pads I've ever owned still could not hold air after a full season... I'm not overly rough with them.. Using a Tensor now..

    • @SurvivalSchoolHouse
      @SurvivalSchoolHouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      -Depends, if a backpacking pad the Sea to Summit ether Lite will work if your gentle with your movements and always use a tyvek ground cloth (I always need to otherwise it pops).
      -More robust with a cot and car camping or don’t care about the weight, get something like the Mondoking.
      -keep the air pressure lower than fully inflated for comfort and less pressure on the seams…which most naturally do anyway for comfort rather than sleeping on rock hard air
      -let me know how it goes!

  • @jacksonschroederproductions

    14:53 he basically says he finds the sea to summit comfort plus the most comfortable for backpacking. this pad does weigh 38 oz tho. a lighter s2s pad is the ether light xt insulated.

    • @SurvivalSchoolHouse
      @SurvivalSchoolHouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the s2s comfort plus is way to heavy, the ether lite is a lot better

  • @johnq6123
    @johnq6123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe a STEWpid question but worth an ask... What about using insulation under a tarp? Either Rigidboard or Batt?? R10 & up values but I don't see people talking about it; the use case would be Tent camping and using a thick air mattress

    • @SurvivalSchoolHouse
      @SurvivalSchoolHouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would work great to use rigid foam underneath, your body still needs to heat up the air in the large air mattress so sometimes it's still noticeably cold if heat escapes on the sides and spots you aren't laying on. I would not use fiberglass batting because the dust particles are bad to breath in and the insulation would compress and not do much for you. Nothing wrong with sandwiching rigid foam on the bottom with a cheap foam pad on top of the air mattress for added warmth, see what you like the best and what works for you, great idea!

    I recommend Klymit brand pads too. Even the thinner pads are comfortable to me as a side sleeper. I have one that's about 1.5 R value and it packs down pretty small. Very affordable when compared to the big brands. I just ordered one that's a 5.0 R value but haven't tried it yet.

    Ive had alot of sleepless nights trying to find a pad that i like for backcountry camping, people may laugh at the weight of my set up now but i really like the standard thermarest pad about 2.5 inches, its about 3.5 lbs and i haul it everywhere on the outside of my pack. i might be the last to arrive at camp but i sleep damm good paird w/ my big agnes wide bag. ill trade the weight for comfort

    • @SurvivalSchoolHouse
      @SurvivalSchoolHouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not used the Ether Lite XT but it looks better than my Q Core SLX, that will probably be the next one I buy because my Big Agnes Q core is starting to fall apart at the seam divots that are compressed in towards the middle of each cell, I just patched at least 7 pinhole leaks at multiple glue seams and it's still not fixed as well as being tough to find those leaks. I need to figure something out, elk season is right around the corner, have you used the Ether Lite?

    • @justindyck9705
      @justindyck9705 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SurvivalSchoolHouse i'm just in the throws of reading reviews and watching endless videos to decide which mat I want to go with. At this point I'm definitely leaning towards the ether lite xt (Large/Rectangle). From what I've gathered so far it seems to be the best balance of R value, packed size, weight, incorporated and really great pump sack, and comfort. I'm a side sleeper and every single review I see of the ether lite xt talks about how it's the most comfortable pad people have ever used. Thanks for sharing your experienced with the Big Agnes, as the qcore was in my mix too. Yes, elk season is just around the corner! Can't wait. Good luck, man!
