  • On Canusa Avenue, houses on one side of the street are in the USA, but on the other side they are in Canada. Its a spot favored by illegal immigrants, and authorities are taking notice. The US is planning to build a wall on the street, and they've already installed a customs post. Duration: 01:50

    If your house is on the border line. Your living room is on the U.S side. You buy a gun on the US side, and decide to store it in your bedroom on the Canadian side would you be liable for arrest for gun smuggling ?

      +Steve Jones yes and no, yes as in Canada they have strict gun laws, and only certain type of guns you are allowed to have, if you have a illegal gun in Canada, and the police decide to investigate your house as some people complained or something stupid you would be charged, prisoned, or both. The No part if you have a legal gun and you have license for both Canada and America, you won't be charged, and if you have a legal gun in Canadian standards than yes, you are allowed to keep it.

      +Steve Jones I think it would depend on your own citizenship. If you are a Canadian, you are subject to Canadian laws and regulations even if part of your home is technically in another country. The same way if your house is on a town line (Happens where i'm at in Toronto) you either live on one side or the other.

    I lived on the Canadian side of Canusa street in the 70's....two blocks up from the customs checkpoint. Had friends straight across on the US side. We would just walk across...eventually they told us we would have to walk down to customs,check in, and walk back up to buddy"s place. 4 blocks vs. 100 ft. At one point, our daylight savings time wasn't synched and we would get called home for dinner an hour early...pissed us all off.

    You have a point there. Although I travel on a US passport, every single time I have travelled between Canada and the States (which is quite often indeed!), Canadian customs and immigration has been far nicer and friendler to me than the Americans. I can only imagine what people go through at the border who do *not* possess a US passport!

      You mean like passports, NEXUS cards, or enhanced driver's licenses (both Vermont and Quebec issue them)? Why invent a new system of ID when you already have three different forms of ID which any of the residents could get? And if you spend millions on a forth international ID system... why wouldn't you expect residents simply to refuse to get that ID, just like they refuse to get a passport, NEXUS, or EDL?

      No. Americans are addicted to using fingerprints for EVERYTHING (banking, going to Disney, getting mortgages, going to work, etc, etc). In Canada, the only time you get fingerprinted is when you're arrested.
      I actually asked around and I have only ever found two co-workers who have used their fingerprints for anything else, and both worked at terrible minimum wage jobs that required fingerprints. I've also worked at terrible minimum wage jobs, but never had that happen, so, like most Canadians, my experience is fingerprints == jail.

    This discussion is silly beause there is NO US CANADIAN BORDER!!
    As a former upstate New Yorker who lives in Southern California I know the difference between "going to Canada", and crossing a real border.into Mexico.
    Harassing people in a small town is pointless. We need an open border system like the "Schengen System" which encompasses most of western Europe.
    For a terrorist enter Canada is entering the US, and vice versa.
    The real border control needs to done at US and Canadian airports.

  • @carlo1831
    @carlo1831 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Sounds simple to me. Have a Canadian Customs station immediately north or town. Have a US Customs Station immediately south of town. While you're in the town, you go where you want. You want to leave, you'd better have a passport. At least if you are leaving southbound. Don't know how the Canadians feel about people coming into their country, but whether they require passports or not is their business.

      Canada does not require a passport to enter. The US requires it. Although I don't see anyone ever try to enter Canada without a passport (After all, they left with one), that isn't the law in Canada. Of course, if you're an American, you may need one (there's some exceptions). And if you're from anywhere else, you will absolutely have to have one.

    • @Kartkid024
      @Kartkid024 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And which country will that be? Also how do they decide. I mean the people of the town aren't going to agree one way or another, Neither is seriously going to want to change their Citizenship and lives. The countries aren't going to agree either. Also regardless of what decision they would make, the people of the city would be angry.

    • @Kartkid024
      @Kartkid024 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** That is in a sense the way it use to be and both Countries split the taxes and what not. With the situation now one country would have to say they want to completely give up their half and the other would gain everything. Neither country is willing to give away. Canada is going to look at the US and say that it is their problem since they want to raise all the security and that they should give it away. Where the USA is going to say is the reason the security was raised is because Canada has failed to do their part and keep out illegal citizens and terrorist from using Canada as a gateway into the US so they should have to give up the town.
      As far as doing it like the JSA in Korea, I don't think it would work. Yes people are free to pass through the boarder in that are as they wish, but it is still very restricted. They have a curfew and they typically aren't allowed to interact with those from the North. Also you would have to very highly restrict access from those that are up there to visit. Both sides would have to clear customs if they ever wanted to leave the town too. Also I think it would cause a problem with taxes and citizenship.

    Children of a common mother have a border with so much security? If there is a European Union of over 25 nations all with cultures and histories which span millennia vs centuries can have open borders it is sad to see Canada and the US have this. Seriously even without the EU as a incentive to open the border, just the gain of money that it costs to patrol the 49h parallel and for it to be put into much better use like healthcare or the ailing education system, is incentive enough.

Please have an open mind here I am not preaching fear or being paranoid, but it just takes that one man with a major explosive to do the U.S people or Canadian people harm, and what better way to get into the U.S or Canada.. a Small quiet town where nobody suspects anything, to me seems pointless to have boarder patrol anywhere if this place has been open the way has for so many ears....

      All of the terrorists that ever got to the US crossed the borders legally. If you wanna take your argument serious you'd have people checking IDs between NY and NJ. That'd mean a police state and the end of America as we know it. Closed borders prevent peaceful cooperation between peoples. We have a lot to lose by closing them, just like we have a lot to lose by not trading with other people.

    In the U.S. there are two different types of passports, the "passport book" and the "passport card." The passport book is your typical U.S. passport with pages for visas. The passport card looks like a driver's license. If you travel by land or boat to/from Canada one may use the passport card. If you travel by air to/from Canada you must use the passport book. But a U.S. citizen must have a passport of some kind to enter the U.S. or Canada. The passport card is cheaper than the passport book.
