Reding Family Threshing: the stook loader

  • What a labor saving device for a threshing crew! A stookloader could take the place of a half dozen bundle pitchers and reduce the number of wagons and horses required to harvest a grain field. The Reding family employs two stookloaders each pulled by four horses to supply a steady stream of bundles for their Minneapolis threshing machine.

So many memories of being on the threshing crew... Ralph Loosmore always starting sentences to me with, "By cracky, Sis.." So nice to see Glenn, Robin, Fred, and Joe. Some of the best days of my life was spent driving around in circles behind a bunch of horse's asses... Lol... Again, great to see you all... Terri Mason, editor, Canadian Cowboy

Hey Terri: Good to hear from you and thank you for the kind words. Too dry to thresh this fall, but maybe you can make it next fall if J. R. and Robin do it again...

Oh boy that takes me back! A lot of my best memories are at their farm, thrashing, and then dinner with the old timers after. I know JR said they're all gone now, but this video hit hard seeing all their seats replaced... but I'm glad the next generation stepped up.

Glad you enjoyed that segment Wilfred and hope you will feel the same way about the next two segments. More of the old timers in there as well.

The physical work is pretty much gone today with all the modern machinery, but so is the companionship that used to exist in agricultural work.

Yes, took a lot more folks as well as horses to produce our grain back then.

Hi I am Barry McLaughlin from Manitoba and I have been looking for some stookloaders as I am going back in to farming with horses as I did when I farmed with my dad years ago, would you be able to point me in the right direction thankyou Barry

Hi Barry: I myself wouldn't be of much help although Robin and J. R. do have one older version they are not using right now. You should be able to find something much closer, though one would think, since they were built there.
