The Story of a 20 Year Effort to Remove Roy's Dam

Roy's Dam was built in the 1930s at the former Roy Family Farm, the land was used for crops and pasture before turning into a golf course in the 1960s. In the 1970s a fish ladder was built and latter in 1999 a series of weirs built below the dam helped adult salmon navigate the dam. However, young fish were often stranded in the pools between the weirs, and the fish ladder clogged and became impassable to young fish. The dam was also blocking sediment, starving the creek downstream of sediment.
Finally, in 2020 after nearly 20 years of negotiating, landowner turnover, regulatory hurdles, designs, and permitting - the dam was finally removed the the creek channel restored to a free-flowing natural state.
