      animals are NOT cheap nannys. Sometimes you have to guard the animal from the kids until they become sensible enough to behave.
      Saw that when I worked in a shelter. The nicest little cat, a bit shy but always eager to hop on my lap for a good cuddle after my job was done in her department, went to a family with toddlers. This kitty never showed me any sign of aggression. But I am grown up, I wait until it comes to me, I know how to touch a cat and never force it. Well, little kids do not know that. They feel a warm fluffy thing and want to GRAP it whatever it takes. Not many cats (or dogs) take that kindly. They feel pushed, cornered and sometimes the kids hurt them.
      The kitty I mentioned came back to the shelter 2 days after adoption, "too dangerous for the kiddies" - ähm, really? They wrote a note on the door "Not sociable with children". It made me angry.
      For heavens sake, if you want your children grow up with animals, TEACH them to get along with each other! They are no nannys, no punching balls, no toys, they are living creatures.

I DO have kids and they learned early on that we make the rules and when we said "no" that we meant it. Yes, toddlers will be toddlers, but that's exactly why there are parents - to help nurture and guide children towards better behavior since they don't have the maturity or mental development to do it themselves. Otherwise, as a parent you're just copping out and taking the easy route.
      Also, he didn't get the dog to "dump negative emotions on it". If that were the case then anytime he felt anxiety he would abuse the dog, while quite the opposite was true. Whenever the owner started getting tense the dog would come to him with love and that love would be reciprocated, creating a bond of love and trust between the two.

      @LadieKadie1 yes the toddler doesn't understand, but that's why the parent needs to be a parent and teach the child that it's not ok to do that. If parents don't teach their children what is ok and not ok, think of the troubles that child will get into once older.
      Look at the way the world is now, we have more confused people that don't even know what gender they are, more getting involved in drugs and crimes, disrespect for elders, etc.

    • @batkat0

      @LadieKadie1 it's called a baby gate. If the kid is too young to understand how to properly interact with a dog then they need to be separated in times where mom or dad isn't 100% focused on monitoring the child, like cooking dinner or cleaning. The dog's life depends on it because he will be punished for biting that kid even if the kid instigated.

Thank goodness my kids are 10 years old and up and respect her crate but they do it because my female dog is on the smaller side so sometimes we can’t find her in the house and it’s a sure way to find her but they know otherwise don’t mess with her crate and we’ve enforced that from they beginning as a pup and she’ll be 6 this year.

    • @chadbushell
      @chadbushell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@iam_loved1686 if your dog is getting feisty when your kids approach the crate, that's a problem. It's true the dog should see its crate/kennel or whatever space is given to them, as a place of relaxation and not punishment, but they shouldn't think they own the crate.
      Dogs are territorial by nature, they scare you away from "their space", all of a sudden you avoid going near it which gives them more space to claim as their own until eventually the entire house is "theirs".
      Children definitely need to play their role as well, which means respecting the dog and not trashing the whole show, but children will do what children do, and from what you're describing, if they even so much as approach the crate, the dog goes nuts. You're basically encouraging the dog to be the boss. You're fortunate that she's small.

Adults we can set limits with around our dog but other peoples children is hard to do. Plus people always blame our dog. It was validating to hear your son say it's not the dogs fault. @@MollyGrue1 it seems there is more and more a lack of education in people around "how to behave properly with an animal". A cop came to my house to give me infos. We were in the garden. A cat was doing his cat business, suddenly the cop decided to pet his head without warning. The cat snapped him and ran away. The cop said to me "you should give a better education to this cat" I was thinking "So should have your mom done with YOU Man".

    My kids have always grown up around dogs, words I taught them were, “gently” and “not near the face”, “not while he’s eating”. I never left the kids alone with the dogs when they were little, not because the dogs ever showed aggression, but because being safe around dogs is a lesson that takes constant guidance. My kids are older now, but from the age of 10 we adopted 2 chihuahuas, both had issues and as a result of the beautiful way my kids are around them, the dogs are fine now.
