This is surely what angels sound like when they sing...no vocal acrobatics, just Karen's pure & perfect voice, alongside Richard's harmonies & beautiful arrangements. So thankful for the recordings that we can still enjoy, all these many years later. She's been gone longer than she was here, but her voice & Carpenter's music will long live.
Just the shear perfection of her vocal quality shines through in this recording. I think this song is actually one of my favorites, but I love everything she sang. What a beautiful gift she graced us all with. Miss her so much!
Me too!! I'm approaching 60 and still love her just as much as the 1st time I heard her on the radio. What an impression she left on us.Karen is like no other.Really miss her.
Her voice never fails to give me chills. I've never heard anybody even close to the depth and quality of her voice. I can think of a few who are 2nd best in my book but none really come close to perfection the way Karen did.
I feel the same as yall. Been listening to her since 1969. I have started listening to Tori Holub...she is as close to Karen as is possible I think. Give her a listen.....
It is so hard to believe that the incomparable Karen Anne Carpenter has been gone 38 years! God how the world misses tremendously her phenomenal voice and incredibly nice, warm personality!
Sure do miss her.The best voice I've ever heard! Yes her nice and warm personality drew me to her immediately from the start when I was 7 years old.She was so funny and quick witted along with being a really good dancer, drummer and bass player to.I still can't get enough.

This was the very last song Karen recorded prior to her death. It's on their album "Voice of the Heart", and Richard did an amazing job putting it together with the OK Chorale filling the background vocals Karen would have sung. A truly beautiful album.
I met Karen and we talked for a little while in front of our dentist office in Downey on Paramount Blvd in October 1976!! Gorgeous in person and was dressed up really nice in spite of a warm Fall Day!! It was exciting to meet her and a day i wont forget! My friends who worked at Gemco would see the whole family over the years in the 70s when they shopped at Gemco as it was very close to the Carpenter home......
So what does a Voice of an Angel sound like ...Glad that she was a Human just like U n I or the World would never have known such a Beautiful Sound like hers...Very Unique, Crisp n Refreshing to listen too...Today’s Music n Singers are All Tryna out do each other with the same sound... But this Carpenter sound will carry on thru more Generations yet to come 🌹🌹🌹
And this was ten months before she passed. It was from her final recording session. This vocal was only meant as a work lead, to show the rhythm section how the melody went. Karen never had the chance to rerecord it. But of course it wasn't necessary anyway. Listen to "Superstar" as covered by Karen. That, too, is a first take vocal. And more: it was the first time she ever sang the song...that first shot became a hit single.
This is one of the best songs Karen recorded. You just feel so much of her thru this song.....heartbreaking that it was her last.....thank you Karen for sharing your beautiful heart and soul with us all, we were very lucky to have you....I hope you are at peace now, I’m sorry that in life, you did not have that one person that could hold you up to make it to the other side of your suffering....I would have held your hand tight.....RIP Karen. We love you forever! 💜💜
Marek Karolczuk An angel who touched the hearts of many people and forever will be irreplaceable. Miss you so much rest in peace Karen carpenter. You left this world too soon but your lovely velvety contralto voice never will
I look at Karen's life this way - although it may seem an odd comparison to many, but humankind was gifted with Nikola Tesla - the man who gave us alternating current of which we would never have heard of Karen Carpenter- and then we WERE gifted with Karen whose voice is immemorial in time as Tesla's inventions are (over 800 patents). So Tesla is my hero for his altruistic love of mankind and providing us with incredible technology (and yet dying in poverty), but Karen with her time-immemorial voice died for lack of love, never have achieved her goal of a happy marriage and children of her own. But both will live in our hearts for eternity. I thank the Universe for both of these brilliant, once-in-a-lifetime gifted human beings (along with Richard of course). Tesla has been forgotten (except for the electric car built in his name by Elon Musk) but Karen's voice and personality will never be forgotten. We should be so blessed.
Really heart bursts because of her voice and passion. I still think i may save her from dying. Still now this type of voices have never been sung. Open my heart and let you win. I dont know but wherever i am will always remembers her warmth and touch of her voices.
Find me any singer in 2021 who could do this, no auto tuner here, just pure talent and. vocal skill. Looking back with today’s knowledge it still amazes me more was not done to support Karen carpenter to deal with anorexia… such a sad loss because of a poorly understood disease. One can only imagine the strength and tone of her voice had she reached 50, 60 or 70…. Alas

I can still remember exactly where I was when I heard she died. Stunned. We still listen to the Carpenters when we are on long drives and love to relax with their blends expertly put together by Richard.
I'm a millennial but I love the Carpenters' music, especially Karen's voice! Yeah, sure, Mariah and Whitney have all the range and power but Karen's voice was just... _perfection!_
Thank You for posting this beautiful song and video.I love this song and love Karen's voice on it.I absolutely LOVE the wings on Karen's back.Very nice last recording of the best voice I have ever heard!
pretty amazing. I hadn't quite appreciated this reading all the way until - well... now. I wish RC would include this on another Royal Philharmonic lp and leave off the choir. I'd rather he overdub a few vocals here and there - and just leave it to Karen for the most part. Thanks for posting.
For some reason, I need the music with the vocals. It is haunting to me to just hear her isolated vocals. Maybe it makes me too sad because of her untimely death, so I need the music to make me feel less sad. I guess that speaks to the exquisite power and perfection of her vocals.
Richard did all their recording on multitrack tape machines with instruments and voices all recorded on separate tracks - easy to isolate any track during playback- also adjust blending levels for the final mix - he is a huge fan of the early Les Paul and Mary Ford recording techniques-
Thank you for your clear explanation John! I understand that Richard has the multitrack tapes, but how did you got hold of those? I'd love to hear more of those a capella's!
Judging from all the phasing you can hear, the vocal has probably been isolated using phase cancellation / inversion and frequency tools such as those in Audacity. This is why you can still partially hear many elements from the original mix that weren't successfully removed.
May 18, 1982-------------Rich & Karen did a " work piece " with Rich at piano.------------it was the last time ever, that Karen put her voice to music. --------She was desperately ill, < 90 Lbs. -------------------I cannot listen without tears. --------------------------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o

This is amazingly creepy. And so very sad. The weight issues. The horridly biased mother. The incest. The way she was pushed into a corner. The temptation of fans to disregard the worst stuff and focus solely on the music - the lush arrangements by Richard or Peter Knight. Somehow your isolating the lead vocal conjures up all of this in my imagination. Great job. Now would somebody please go after Richard.
Who were Karen's tormentors? They know their role in her demise. May God have mercy on your souls. You might have helped her. You instead were a source of torment for his incredible human being.
Hey it's not fair to judge people in her life. She had anorexia a mental illness. Her family encouraged her to get treatment but she refused. When finally she agreed to have treatment her heart was already damaged which caused her death. God loves her and maybe would not want her to suffer from complications. Just be glad she was born to give happiness through her incredibly beautiful singing voice.😁
