@shiftwrenchrepeat i'm right now trying to decide if I need to replace the fuel pump again. The original lasted a 120k miles. Now it's it's been another fifty thousand. Normally I'd sayThat's too soon to suspect it again. I think I bought a quality replacement. It's a shame I have to suspect it already.
First time tuning in. We opened a shop about 2 years ago. Its just the three of us and we were technicians that were tired of working for greedy shop owners taking advantage of people. Decided if we opened our own we could make sure the jobs were down correctly and the customer was charged appropriately. I would say at least once a week we get screwed by junk parts. Its a consistent problem from all parts vendors including the dealer. The worst one recently was a Ford Focus ST with a cracked cylinder head. We purchased a reman from autozone with a 5 year warranty. The cylinder head we received we found out after installing it was cracked the same way as the one removed. Were still fighting to get paid on that job. The parts stores need to pay out better on labor claims and increase there quality control. The only way I see this happening is if we has shop owners come together somehow and hold them accountable. Hang in there and keep doing your best. The world needs us and we will get through it! We work do hard to be doing extra work for free!
Sounds like you’re running your operation just like me! I know I’m one of the cheapest in town…. Also the lowest parts mark up, but I’m a SMALL shop, I’m making a good living, and my customers are happy. Keep up the good work man! Being a business owner Definitely has its challenges, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world! I wrenched at the Toyota dealer for almost a decade before I took the leap. I’ll be good, just getting REAL sick of it. Thanks for tuning in! Subscribe if ya havent! I mix in these discussions about every other video usually
@@shiftwrenchrepeat we started out as the cheapest in town and ive started to realize our labor rate was too low. I dont see any reason to do more than 20-30% mark up on parts. Especially with how shitty they are lately. However i think our labor rate needs to be at least in the average because we do go above and beyond where most shops will charge average or higher rates and do the bare minimum. Keep up the good work, if your ever in PA lets link up and do a collab video!
Shop owner here. I am tired of crappy aftermarket parts, imposter parts. Imposter parts are aftermarket parts stuffed manufacture bags and boxes. Example Motorcraft, GM from places like auto zone, part authority, world Pac etc. I have been using more dealer parts and getting just as good pricing as well. I just did a transmission in a GMC Savana 4500 with a 6.6l called jasper, power train products both told me they only offer a start only warranty. Truck starts goes into gear and drives and shifts warranty over. Call my local dealership the price was better, and they gave me 3-year 100k warranty. Also, price check dealers called two different dealers for the same part different prices.
I have a friend who works for a VW/Audi dealer. During Covid they started shipping cars off the line with less than OEM quality parts just to keep up with demand and cut costs. We are getting screwed on every end of the industry
We really are, that’s why I left the dealer…. All the warranty work, cut labor times, ect…. I’d never go back, I mean o always wanted to be my own boss anyway but, honestly, if I still had to wrench for someone else, I wouldn’t be wrenching anymore. Yeah owning the shop can be stressful, and I work more than I did at the dealer, but I keep the whole pie, it’s more rewarding, and the flexibility is nice…. If I need to come in late and work late? Perfect, if I wana be there at 5am and be off at noon? Cool! I end up working a lot of weekends, but never new projects, just to get ahead, and it’s completely by choice… I used to DREAD Saturday shifts at the dealer….. our dealer had 9 techs including me, and Saturday’s we dropped down to a 3 tech rotation….. and the schedule was always filled as if 9 of us were there…. Was always a complete sh!Tshow…..
I'm trying to keep an Audi A4 B7 with a 3.2 and a manual alive and going, because I simply like it.. but it's been an uphill struggle. Audi themselves already told me 2 years ago they consider this car a classic and therefore only Audi Individual can help me get parts.. when I needed a new transmission I was only able to get a "rebuilt" one from a company that gave me 2 years warranty for it - and I already needed to use it 3 times over 18 months. And of course they say if you open the thing, the warranty's void, so only they know what they fucked up and what needed to be done to fix it. When the flaps in my intake manifold gave up, my lifesaver mechanic was able to fix them but told me next time I may be forced to fish for a used manifold because again - Audi won't help
I have a C5 A6 2.7T that I’m in the same boat with - needed a steering knuckle and Audi wanted 800 for it on a 8 month back order. Ended up taking a 9 hour drive (round trip) to get a used knuckle off a wrecked A6 for $40 bucks. With gas included only spent about $100 bucks
Brother, I listened to this whole thing. God bless you. This is why I stick to carpentry. "Shit, the wall's out of plumb. Hold on, release those three screws at the top and we'll adjust it." Thanks for your service.
I have a jeep I bought a few years ago. I replaced the fuel pump out of preventative maintenance bc my gas gauge was wonky. To put it in perspective my 3rd replacement died a few weeks ago and left me on the side of the road.
I have had tons replacement parts that failed less in than 20k miles. Brake calipers/wheel cylinders sticking or leaking, wiper motors and window motors that were either dead out of the box or failed a few months later, fuel pumps that seem to go out every 6 months to a year, water pumps that fail after 15k or less miles, power steering pumps that either dont work/whine/ leak like crazy right out of the box and all sorts of other miscellaneous odds and ends. Even stupid stuff like wiper blades seem to dry rot or fall apart in less than 1 year, light bulbs seem to burn out more often and have had numerous gaskets(especially valve cover gaskets) that start seeping or leaking a few months down the road. Its getting ridiculous and it's not even a matter or brand choice, even the OEM "top of the line" parts are just as bad but with an even more ridiculous price. The biggest offender in my book is aftermarket replacement rubber components that literally dry rot and fall apart in less than 3 years where i have seen factory rubber bushings and grommets that were over 50+ years old in perfect condition and now brand new ones start to dry rot after 1 year regardless of storage conditions/amount of use.
Hey I totally agree with the parts situation I work at a body shop and it's a huge mess all the time. On a different topic I know you have or had a 1990 Mazda 4 x 4 pickup in regarding the front chrome wheels with the five holes not the aluminum ones where does the black ring go in relation to the center cap I wish I could send a photo. Thoughts? I've searched, even have a shop manual and notta. Thank you.
I cant remember how many times I've had to replace brand new parts both before installing them and immediately after installing. Also, In my 20 years of working on cars, I have NEVER had a good experience with Moog in terms of impressive quality and durability. This is one of the many reasons why I'm not a full time tech and one of the many reasons why I'm bacl in school to get away from cars lol
@@shiftwrenchrepeat yeaaaa, I got only 8+ years on you and joints already hurt, crack, pop, get stuck... Even working smarter vs harder still takes a toll on your body.
My GM car battery died last winter (battery was 7 years old, surprised it lasted so long). Dealership replaced it with OEM AC Delco battery--which lasted 7 months. Back to the dealership and they said it was a dud, which happens, and it was replaced under warranty. Second battery lasted only a few months. Back to the dealership and they said it was another dud...and these are AC Delco OEM batteries, not some no-name brand. I'm in Canada, and I decided to stop the madness with AC Delco batteries, and go with a Canadian Energy battery (after getting a little $$ back from the dealership). New battery is amazingly strong, with better specs than OEM. If anyone asks me where to get a new battery, I'm know whom I'm going to recommend.
This is what happens when these automakers can't seem to stick to something for more than a few years. Nobody can keep up with all the parts variations and they never reach a good consistency. If we still had distributors these new 'engineers' would have 7 different caps for the same engine.
Got a few questions…no disrespect I’m just asking. Regarding the van, with that many issues, why didn’t you just take it back? Or ask for a partial refund? Or did you do all that and they stiffed you? If it is not as they described then they need to fix it.
Good questions! No the parts store would Definitely make it right if it was a mechanical operating failure, it was 2 months to get it as they build em as they are in demand, so I didn’t wNt to have to wait again
Agreed! Replacements should last similar to original, not half or 25%as much. 😢
It’s a tough gamble man
