  • ** Hope you like the Mampi Swift cartoon from our brilliant new recruit, DNB ILLUSTRATED - AKA LORA JONES. Go seek out her fab rave art on Insta - dnbillustra... - and official website: www.dnbillustrated.co.uk/ **
ROAR combines old school and upfront for the first time today as we welcome drum and bass stalwart MAMPI SWIFT as we celebrate 30 years in the business and 25 years of his label CHARGE RECORDINGS with what is his most in-depth interview EVER.
In this brutally frank and honest three-parter stripped across a week, Swift - AKA PHIL ANIM - will chart the major ups and downs of his 30 years in the game as a top DJ, producer and label owner.
With no topic off-limits, Phil will talk about how he went from highs of being one of the biggest names in the business to his lowest - struggling with his mental health, making bad business decisions, losing all his bookings and not leaving home for two years, ballooning to 24 stone before quitting the scene altogether - before making triumphant return a couple of years later.
He will also discuss the profound impact his father’s death had on him several years ago, how it helped him find peace and happiness as a proud dad-of-four and helped him cope with all the difficulties music artists have faced during the pandemic.
It’s an absolutely barnstorming interview, so sit back and enjoy and make sure you catch the subsequent two eps…
Part 2 - where Phil discusses his infamous ‘double-drop’ technique and rivalry with ANDY C, and why he HATES his performing name - is coming on TUESDAY with part 3 next FRIDAY, where Phil gives his take on the current DnB scene, while asking: How and why did it all become so white and middle-class, and is structural racism at play?

Yeah blows my mind to try and understand how a DJ or MC of rave could ever be depressed. I used to play for free just to play D n B back when only vinyl was the media. How could you be sad living your dream, but the reality is when a dream comes true what's your next dream?

Bryan Gees interview is a great journey too. Mampi and his story is the archytypical hero's journey. Staring into the abyss and finding the courage to bring yourself back from the brink is the ultimate battle in life. Journeys like these should be shared and my hat of to him for baring his knowledge for others to gain hope that you can survive anything.

The guy is a giant his towering presence always felt. I remember him dwarfing the ravers, the mixer, the set up, the entire place. His tunes impacted the scene in a big way. His productions changed the game in 1997 and I honestly thought his DJing was one of the best out there.

Mampi your more of a Legend now mate. :) Sorry but you can't escape it haha ;) Your style of DJing is Legendary... look how many people you have inspired.. A.M.C credits you as his inspiration as so many I've spoken to. Those double drops back in the day and the countless rewinds.. The first time I heard your double drops of The Pulse man.. IC3 on the Mic.. just electric. To name a small snipet. My grandad was like your dad, I got a arkward handshake instead of a cuddle lol but like you said they were from a different time of "mans man".. lol He softened up as time went by and you knew he did have to tell you he cared because he show it in his way. He gave you the best advice that was short but didn't need to be expanded on... especially when he passed. Your journey is such a great example to people that you can pick yourself up from the depths of hell and somehow find the strength within yourself to find that meaning to not only survive but have faith in the future. In these times of mental health getting worse more Hero's should do interviews like this. Anyhow I could go on ;)

Mr swift should have received more recognition in the late 90s early200s he was the best dj to mix two records an create the maddest heaviest sound you could imagine. I see him perform at the sanctuary for accelerated culture an epic night with djs from around the world aswell as Britain's finest, swift did the set before Americas dj craze who at the time was 3x dmc world champion. Mampi tore the place apart with just two decks, dj craze came on for a 2 hour set hooked up laptops more decks an still couldnt match we had all just heard. Mr swift is just a pure savage dj

Relationships with parents can be strange. I don't ever remember telling my parents that I loved them, and never heard them say it to me. Until my mum got Alzheimers and was in a home and not really with it. I remember walking out of there and crying because of the fact that I'd never told her and how stupid it was. But, much like Swift, you knew. Guess they were from a generation that didn't really go in for all of that, but I know that when/if I have kids they're going to be hearing it until they're sick to the back teeth of hearing it.

@@TS-pm6in my personal view is that this music had been progressing in this direction since 1990/91. It obviously wasn't called Jungle back then but the basslines, the breaks, the vibes were aligning themselves from that point. Musically, it could be argued that the peak was later on with Source Direct and Photek, etc at the heights of their powers (95-97). Both sides of that vinyl "Soul" and "Load" murdered it. Instant rewind after rewind. "Jaws" was also another super tune. He has catalogues of tunes it gets so stupid. The guy is too humble and his work rate was way above average.
