I agree that Marty is a Legend! Rust in Peace!!!! BTW the first time I saw Megadeth was in Crest Theater in Sacramento when you opened up for Exciter. I was in high school at the time and my friend said, "This is the guy that Metallica kicked out"! I listened, with those pyramids of Marshall cabinets, and went and bought Killing is my Business the next day and never looked back!

In a sense it was. Megadeth was able to maintain their sound the way we all liked it, and Marty was able to move onto something he wanted to do. I can imagine Marty would’ve grown less and less interested and either downward spiraled, or left on a worse note. Also, staying might’ve affected Megadeth’s music. Oftentimes there’s a big difference between doing something because you have to and doing something because you want to.
It became a double-edged sword in the end. Marty helped make Megadeth a household name in metal but was also the guy that pushed the band to be more poppy which ended up in a series of disappointments before he left.
@Jasper DT Agreed! They could not have a found a more perfect guy in Kiko. I swear Mustaine strikes gold more than anyone in the music world when it comes to finding talent.

Jason is the reason I watched this video and I'm really disappointed. Sometimes I feel that Marty knew that he was overshadowed by Jason and you won't see him talking about Jason a lot even tho they have been friends for years.

Rust in Peace, Countdown To Extinction, Youthanasia, Cryptic Writing, Risk - they all sound different from each others. So, Marty Friedman was in a very good era of Megadeth. Some fans don't like Cryptic Writing or Risk - but I think they are both good. He is my favorite guitarist Megadeth has ever had.
Totally agree, lost something at megadeth when marty left. For me the best members have been Marty,Nick,Chris,Gar and of course the daves
I am very into "traditional" Metal and I dislike the "alternative" agenda that was forcely pushed in the '90s, but I love both Cryptic Writings and Risk. Risk especially is one very underrated record.
I love Heavy Metal Megadeth as much as I love Thrash Metal Megadeth.
Marty is really something special and is very missed. I wish he is a part of the band. Too bad those golden years couldn't last longer...
@@leyland610 The year 2016 is well-known for musicians who passed away. David Bowie, Prince, and George Michael were definitely the most famous ones but Nick Menza was a shock for me because he was young (only 51 years old) and played on one of favorite albums, Rust in Peace. I think Megadeth has always had amazing musicians. Just like Ozzy Osbourne with his band - always with best guitarists, bass guitarists, and drummers - and even great keyboardists if necessary (Ozzy has used but I think Megadeth has never).
@@kresimirmandic3807 I love especially "Prince of Darkness" and "Insomnia". "Breadline" is a very good ballad. "I'll Be There" is amazing - especially the version on "That One Night". The fans in Buenos Aires and the band give the best performance I have ever heard on a live album. Not one of their most popular line-ups but they managed to make a very good live album.
@@Rekko82 I agree with you that That One Night live album is amazing. The band played extremely well and the crowd humming along to all the riffs made it an amazing show. I had that live album in my car for at least six months when it first came out. The set list is amazing as well.

11:50-12:04. Words that EVERY lead guitarist show live by. Music has to come full circle. A band as a whole should complement itself throughout the song, intro/verses/chorus/bridge/solo's, the whole thing. That's one of the biggest things in my opinion that makes Marty one of the greatest ever. He GETS it. He knows how to make the lead sing with the song versus fighting for a spot for it just sit there. Definitely without a doubt my favorite lead guitarist!

Marty's work in Megadeth was the biggest eye opener for me, and still is to this day.
I call him the Metal Stevie Ray Vaughan. Because he plays with so much emotion, technical skill, power, and attitude where I instantly know it's Marty playing.
His playing is so recognizable, and he is, without a doubt, one of my biggest influences as a lead guitar player.

I was saying it's more in terms of the attitude of the playing, pick attack, wide, beefy vibrato, and such.
@ Scales and licks are only a sure, Kirk Hammett may be closer in terms of scales and licks, but anyone can easily hear that the attitude of Marty and SRV is much closer.
Both Marty and SRV pick HARD, both have crazy, wide vibrato, and such.
Scales and licks are really the only thing separating them, honestly, but the attitude and the way the licks are played is much closer.
Marty's attitude and the WAY he plays, is what makes him my second favorite guitar player of all time, right behind Steve Vai.
@ I disagree. While I love Satriani, Steve Vai is still my favorite guitarist to this day.
Check out his song, "Hand of Heart," for some amazing soulful guitar playing.
In fact, Vai's later stuff is more melodic than his stints with Roth and his earlier stuff.

Actually I hadn't noticed they did an episode with Tom Morello not very long ago, still it's been a while since they put out an interesting episode, I think it was the one with Vinnie Paul.
The one with David Ellefson was good.
One of the better fact or fiction vids imo. Marty's answers are so clear, concise, and comprehensive. He has a lot to say but none of it is unnecessary bullshit, it's all gold. I particularly enjoyed learning that I was a better guitar player than he was at age 14, as I had been playing since age eight and shredding since about 10 or 11. But now I am 40, and Marty has long since put me to shame in the technical ability Department. Like he said though, no good music or bad music, it's all about what you like. Pure gold right there

Zero ego, man. Man, I wished the interview was longer. And i agree with him, shredder is kind of a limited word. If he was only a shredder, he wouldn't have the recognisition that he has.
When the forum on his official website was still open, I would talk about what I struggle with on my life at that time like crying, he replied to me and said it is alright to be myself and I was so touched. I like him so much.

Marty Friedman is the only guitarist whose first note is enough to give me instant goosebumps. What Wikipedia (or any of us) can say are just words. Music is an Absolute Language, which escapes all human description: it communicates and makes itself understood, and MARTY's Music is not the exception, is also a perfect example of that. ¡🇨🇱Saludos desde Chile🇨🇱!

He’s such a classy player. Can melt your face with utter speed but also stays very musical and chooses some weird but tasty notes that make him sound really unique.
Marty has been my guitar idol ever since I started. His phrasing, musicality and his passion for the instrument make him one of the greatest guitar players of all time.

The solo in Tornado of Souls is my favorite solo in Megadeths discography. I am so grateful for, and so humbled by Marty Friedmans guitar work.

Megadeth is my favorite band. Has been since I first heard Killing back in 85. When I first bought Rust In Peace and heard Marty, I thought "holy shit", this guy is awesome! Combined with Mustaine's guitar work, he's no slouch either, they made a hell of a guitar duo. Add in the rhythm section of David and Nick, and these four guys created a masterpiece. Still my favorite album after all these years. Thank you guys for making what I consider the best thrash metal record ever. RIP Nick.
