If you noticed his DNFs and bad strategy has been his Achilles heel this year. He's always been fast. A little more luck and better team work with his crew and he'll have a much better year next year.
Long time and highly regarded American racing journalist, Chris Economaki, once said that "road courses are for drivers, but ovals are for racers." Once you watch more oval racing, you see the wisdom in his quote. Despite it being boiled down to as simple as possible a quote, there is a lot of nuance you can unpack with it. Ovals are indeed much more conducive to side by side racing and overtaking than road courses are. And judging by Romain's performance here both this year and last (his first oval race was at this track last year after skipping the rest of them the entire season), I can confidently say that we can infact use "racer" to describe him. Good show!

Nice job! People that say oval racing is boring need to watch this. It looks very stressful. Many times your tires were inches away from the other cars and at high speed.
for me as a europe guy it's a little bit boring because the riders just go in circles. the speed and the constant attempt to overtake is very interesting again 👍
For all the people who say about ovals, "It's boring and all they do is turn left", this video tells a completely different story. The focus required to drive 200 MPH in this environment is unreal.
That's why I usually like to make an analogy with cycling since there are different kinds of tracks with flat and mountain stages. It's very similar to IndyCar.
Anyone know why Indycar doesn't make a visit to Daytona? More super speedways (Indy, Texas, Talladega etc.) would be awesome! The smaller speedways where 2/3 of the field end up a lap down or greater isn't that great.

Judging by how well you set up cars to overtake on this oval, both this year and last year, I'm going to have to say that you, sir, despite the road racing background, are infact a racer. Good show! Keep it up!
Economaki was right. He wasn’t denigrating either style, but on an oval you’re rarely more the 3 car lengths away from another car, lapped or not while a road course can get really spread out.
@@cflashi he didn't mean it to put down road racing. It was just a simplified way of saying there's a difference between the two. Road racing is for sure a lot more technical and doesn't have as much side-by-side racing. Of course it is still a huge mental game of how to time a momentum advantage you have figured out in order to overtake the guy in front. Ovals are primarily figuring out how to do that. It's generally more competitive and there is a lot more side by side racing. It's much more repetitive over a lap, but the point of Ovals is less about outright driving ability and more how to time your momentum, taking different lines to complete an overtake. Less technical but challenging in other ways.

The spotters normally use binoculars from the top of the grandstand, but this track is kind of small, just 1.25 miles (just short of 1 kilometer) so the spotter may just use his eyes instead.
Les spotters comme en NASCAR sont souvent eux dans les grands stands élevé pour vraiment voir toute la piste et suivre leur pilote, ils ont aussi des jumelles et quelques caméras (surtout sur grands circuits)

none of the races are covered live on TH-cam (legally), you'll have to find a way to watch the NBC/Peacock broadcast (Sky F1 also broadcasts Indycar races)

I know Grosjean very well. He was very a aggressive driver of Lotus Renault. On the other hand, I've never seen such circuit that has an endless very fast curve like that!!!!
A good race out there Romain. More completed laps = more experience on these tracks. I really felt your teams strategy didn't do you any favours. I'm not sure what it is but the Andretti race set ups seem to struggle at ovals. Good luck in the next one.
Just had a Idea, so why doesn't F1 have spotters? Like people to tell you where the other driver is. Would save lots of incidents, obviously takes a little away from skill, but still.
That engineer would break my flow state for sure, super useful and I can see the fine art of it, but I can see it being sometimes more distracting than good so I guess that's part of the job

The straights at Gateway are maybe 1/4 mile at most before your into the next turn, and like Rafael said, one set of corners is a much tighter radius than the other. Iowa can handle more throttle in the corners because it’s shaped more like the common “D Shaped” oval that is symmetrical.
Not sure if you came over from F1, but... 1.) Indy has points for more than just the top 10, in fact P13 means 17 points. There is also 1 bonus point if you lead at least one lap + another 2 for leading most laps 2.) You'll only get points when you actually do finish the race 3.) 26 drivers raced there
Why does your race engineer tells you what the guy next to you is doing every 5 seconds? They don't really do that in F1, do they? Do Indy cars not have good mirrors?😂 I imagine Kimi would be very annoyed by this 😂
On ovals it’s more like having a partner looking out for your back. Also the amount the spotter talks and what info they give out is often driver dependent. So RG get as much info as he wants
I started dozing off after watching this, the only thing preventing me from dozing off fully was the guy on the mic trying to earn a paycheck by talking like his job depended on it.
Can’t run an oval race in rain. There’s no tire made that can handle an IndyCar pulling 4 Gs over a long turn without throwing them into a wall, and the spray would blanket the entire track so that nobody (drivers/camera/fans) could see anything until they all crashed.

Agreed. Those passes on the outside look so difficult. One little mistake and you're in the wall.

They’ll still have binoculars even on a short track like Gateway.

Why don't they go flat out in Indy car? It looks like they slow down as if there was a safety car in front of them. Btw I'm new to Indy car.
You can go flat out on certain oval tracks, especially Speedways like the Indianapolis oval - Gateway is not one of them.

it's not his engineer, it's his spotter. they are required on ovals
They're going way too fast on ovals to be able to drive and avoid cars. Unlike F1 where they're only going fast during a small percentage of the race
