      I'd love to see Moffat's reaction to that, fast asleep dreaming about wibbly wobbly timey wimey, and the suddenly being woken up out of the blue?
      "Hello? who the hell is this? It's 2am!" "Matt?" "What? Tomb of the Cybermen?" "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING WATCHING TOMB OF THE CYBERMEN AT 2AM IN THE MORNING, AND WHY ARE YOU PHONING ME ABOUT IT, GO ANNOY KAREN!"

    "You belong to us. You shall be like us" - Tomb of the Cybermen is a straight up classic; one of the very best of the Troughton Era, as well as being up there with World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls as one of the greatest Cybermen stories ever produced. The Cybermen are really effective and iconic throughout, the acting on the whole is really good, especially by the core TARDIS trio. The music, the cliffhangers and the introduction of the Cybermats are also highlights. It's lucky that it was discovered in 1991, otherwise we wouldn't have it today.
    Evil of the Daleks is also a classic in its own right. The writing is very good, Theodore Maxitble was a fascinating villain, the Daleks are proper threatening throughout, and having the last two parts set on Skaro where we are finally introduced to the Dalek Emperor gives the story an epic sense of scale. Hopefully, at some point, the animation team will do justice to this story as this would definitely benefit from animation.

    Shame you didn't include the scene in the target practice room with this line from the Doctor:
    "Now there is a distinct element of risk in what I'm asking you all to do, so if anyone wishes to leave they must do so at once. (Jamie starts making for the door, but the Doctor grabs him) Not you, Jamie."
    According to Frazer Hines, that's one of those silly improvised moments he and Patrick Troughton would slip into the filming of an episode; much to the chagrin of the director who wasn't expecting it.

    Here we come Season 5!
    Tomb of The Cyberman was my first Second Doctor story, it was on Netflix in my country for a short period of time, it was all put together and presented as a movie, it's a great story and it's where we really start to get the feel of not only the characters but how they interact.
    Also, Welcome Victoria and R.I.P Deborah Watling.

    About your comment on Jamie and Victoria - if I remember right (I went through every available Classic Who on Britbox a few years ago), Jamie was always very protective and caring for the female companions, like a big brother. That was always nice to see. Someday I have to go back on Britbox and watch Classic Who all over again!

    Do you remember 'Closing Time'? Do you remember that creature that attacked Craig that made the Dr have to do that amazing jump thought the glass window? That creature was also a Cybermat!
    Yes I'm afraid this is one of those stories where "anything that can go wrong will go wrong".
    As to what you said about their knowledge of the Cybermen, I think there's probably a big difference between having first hand knowledge and just reading about them in books (or whatever they have instead of books from whichever time period this is).
    Human curiosity, in this case archaeological, can be dangerous sometimes and there's always those people that want to know more, we should know, we're Dr Who fans after all.
    Really, really glad you enjoyed this & 'The Evil of the Daleks'. I too share your love for the humanised Daleks, absolutely perfect for imitating in the the kids playground!

    I loved this story when it came out because prior to its release it had been presumed missing & it was talked about so fondly in Doctor Who magazine as being a firm favourite with fans at the time. They even tried to re-construct the large control panel as a sort of artists impression based on both the script & memories of set designers. So when it was found in its entirety, I was over the moon! Many thanks for another great review & really, don't feel you have to say sorry for wanting a bit of time out, you do such a great job with these & deserve a rest!

  • @grfgtbhh34
    @grfgtbhh34 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    While a lot of people here seem to really love this story, it’s interesting to note that it is kind of controversial with some fans because it was totally missing for many years and the soundtracks for it were hard to find.
    So, when it was found, a lot of people were really disappointed because of overhyping.
    For my money, I really love the set design and the location filming, but I’m mostly lukewarm on the overall story. Some good moments though.
    BTW The Tomb is one of the biggest sets DW has ever had. Like that’s not visual trickery, they actually are climbing down this huge, multi level set.
    15:19 Well, that became one of the problems with the Moffat Era. If Everybody Lives, then death doesn’t matter and there’s not a lot of threat. One of the things I appreciate about Classic Who is a certain amount of grit that’s lacking in the New Series.

    • @petersvillage7447
      @petersvillage7447 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I remember the ecstatic headline in Doctor Who Magazine - 'TOMB FOUND'. They'd already lined up narrated audio recordings for release, but rushed the video out instead (at a slightly inflated price). You're absolutely right - after the initial enthusiasm a sort of uneasy silence settled and it was sort of silently agreed that Tomb really wasn't as good as everybody had been saying/hoping. It's nice to see that subsequent generations of fans who didn't have the same expectations have come to rate this story highly once again.

    • @obiwankenobi687
      @obiwankenobi687 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      grfgtbhh34 the grit and death and unjust death was all there in the RTD era. We came to love characters in the space of an episode like Lynda with a Y, Jabe, Sir Robert, Gwyneth, the whole of Bowie Base 1 etc and wee devastated when they died. Moffat on the other hand resurrected so many people or removed the threat of death so completely that I was sort of rooting for people in his episodes to actually die to see if he’d grown a pair of balls yet rather than hoping they all made it back safely and alive.

      @RangaTurk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cyril Shaps voiced a character on an old Enid Blyton Noddy vinyl LP in the late 1970s sometime. I trust it would probably be a very rare item now. But then again Jon Pertwee voiced Spotty on the Super Ted cartoon and both were acting together on the UNIT laboratory set in Planet Of The Spiders from 1974. Bernard Archard from the first Troughton story Power of The Daleks returns for Pyramids Of Mars in 1975 as does Philip Madoc from The War Games for The Brain Of Morbius in 1976. Another guy who's name escapes me from The Seeds Of Death returns for Revenge Of The Cybermen so you get a whole host of very good supporting actors from the 1960s returning in the mid 1970s period of the show.

And I also decided to skip over Sesska's reactions to stories I haven't seen, just in case they are discovered sometime in the future. So I only watch the reactions for stories I've actually seen.

    Growing up as a fan of a certain age, 'Tomb of the Cybermen' was considered one of the holy grails. When it was suddenly discovered in Hong Kong in 1991, it was like the Dead Sea Scrolls had turned up. Then, when it was rush-released on VHS in the UK, it immediately stormed the video charts. The night of that release I watched Episode One and tried to sleep... but even at 19 I had to see the rest of the story.

    Still one of the best second Doc stories. Can still remember the excitement on hearing it had been rediscovered... and buying a VHS copy in London in 1990.
    The Doctor is super manipulative in this story, you wonder what his motivations are? Perhaps bowing to the inevitability of the situation and thinking these people are here anyway, might as well fix the problem now
    The psychedelic wall effect isn’t a very Cyberman kind of thing though, odd. Wonder How they came up with that particular trap?

    My late mother's favourite story. This one and pretty much anything with K9.
    She thought the Cybermats were cute.

    Another good thing about you taking breaks and videos of yours getting delayed is that we get closer to a release date of Fury from the Deep (hopefully current times won’t affect that), meaning that if you’re lucky, it will already be out by the time you get to that point.

    Looking back, it's interesting that you bonded so much with Ben who is generally regraded as one of the weakest companions.
    The Daleks wanting to add the 'human factor' to their makeup comes back, of course in New Who in Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks.

    Brilliantly executed scene.

    It's difficult to communicate how rare this story seemed when it came back... in our time of plentiful opportunity to relive the 1960s... because I didn't even know what these Cybermen sounded like until this....

    How can I put this without spoiling "Fury From the Deep"..? The beginning of the next story (Wheel in Space) does give away a major story element from the end of "Fury". You may want to consult a friend who is familar with Classic Who and work out if it wouldn't be best to wait to move on passed "Fury" until the animated version arrives. Not that I want to delay your reactions because I enjoy them (just trying to help you get the best viewing experience.)

    I do really love this story because it gives hints of the doctors past with his family as he was a grandfather that suggests children it way I love 1-4 the most as the uniformity was there and mystery

    Re: The 'stupid' people in this story; as ever, Terry Pratchett put it best:
    “...Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry...”
