How To Stop Curling Edges In Canvas Board | Acrylic Pouring #2

  • I bought these canvas boards from Micheals. I love to try all the things when pouring so I definitely love that these boards are a cheap and space-saving solution.
While some people have never experienced a problem with their boards curling I have and so I wanted to be proactive in stopping that.

My suggestion: use a paintbrush using water and brush the back entirely with the water while the canvas itself is flipped on plastic sheet on a table (back facing towards you while front artwork is facing directly into the plastic). The front of the canvas which has the artwork painted and dried to the touch must be facing down directly in contact with the plastic; what really matters is that the artwork is dried before applying that water from the back. Also, add weight to the canvas that can adhere to its mass (like books and paper; between 15 - 25 lbs) while the back is wet, covering all of the weight to the entire canvas. Set it in for 1 hour. After that, the canvas should be as flat as it can be. I already experienced it first hand.

I've Gessoed front and back of canvas and MDF boards and both still warped to varying degrees after pouring. I have a full bag of popsicle sticks so when I ran into your hack, I immediately got my glue gun out of the cupboard and went to work on 3 blank ones. I can't wait to see the results. THANK YOU so much!!

Ugh. I didn't know this. And I had an amazing pour, and my canvas bowed. Thank you for this video!

When I heard that canvas boards warp I bought some 8ft lathes and cut them down to fit the edge of the canvas boards, and one across the middle. They cut easy with an exacto or miter saw. I buy the Arteza that are already done with Gesso.
You can make your own gesso - TH-cam has some recipes for this. Inexpensive, and convenient- you can make it at home if you want to paint, but don't have any gesso.

I also appreciate the suggestion about the popsicle sticks; I'll get some of those and a glue gun as soon as I can. You rock!

Don't know why there are no comments on your post but, I have been having problems with my canvas boards warping. Your tip is spot on and I appreciate your solution to a common pouring problem. Thanks a lot.

Thank you so much...I've been struggling trying to figure out how to prevent the warping. I love the popsicle idea. Will be using on my next pour. Also covering the ugly spotchy back with cardstock is awesome. Will be doing that too! Just subscribed and will definitely follow you IG.

Thank you! I just had my first curling board. The pour was amazing and now it’s all pooling in the middle. I will def do the popsicle stick method. I do wonder if it would help to put sticks in the middle as well?

The actual problem is that one side is wet and as it dries, it shrinks, causing the board to warp. I have two very simple fixes. First, you can let the pour dry and then just gently bend the board back into position. If you are also going to frame it, this will help flatten it as it has to go into grooves that will straighten it. Put the back on, and voila! Flat.
The other option is to put water on the back and dry it under heat, like with a blow dryer or heat gun. The wet side will shrink like the other side did while drying, and thus, pull itself back straight. The same works for loose canvas. If you wet the back and set it in the sun, the canvas will shrink while drying and thus, tighten itself on the stretcher boards again.

BRILLIANT!! Day before yesterday, I did my very first ever pour painting and, when I got up yesterday and saw it had curled up, it broke my heart! (Not that it's a very good piece or anything, but it's my first one!). Thank you so much for this; I couldn't imagine how it could be fixed. If I don't have any waxed paper, is there anything else I could put on the painted side that wouldn't end up pulling the paint off? I haven't had a use for waxed paper in a good 35 years, so I hate to buy a whole roll, LOL!

You can use non stick baking paper- that’s what I use. Glassine paper is best but too expensive

@@catsspasmodicartsylifevlog9304 It's strange but I haven't found any waxed paper! Foil - yes, plastic wrap - sure, parchment paper - no problem. Waxed paper SHOULD be with those, but it doesn't seem to be there. Doesn't anybody use it any more?

@@gwenbaby6293 I've never even heard of glassine paper? Is it normally used in baking or what? Is non-stick baking paper the same as parchment?

Hi! Just came across this. I have watched
    LeftBrainedArtist
He sprayed the board with the Sealer like you put on top of your artwork to protect it. The guy
LeftBrainedArtist loves to solve problems he does all kinds of tests...check him out. He has helped me. I don't video my work but thoroughly enjoy watching
Going to check out more of your videos. I pray this helps you and hope LBA can teach you different stuff if you check out his Brain! Until then
    Happy Pouring!!!🙏❣️

I bought a kit with canvas boards included and that's what happened, the canvas turned into a bowl. They helpfully didn't mention that in the kit.

For anyone else who was waiting for the point: use hot glue on the back to adhere posicle sticks near the borders.

Artist loft canvas panels don’t bow. Cheap canvas panels bow.
