This is probably the best and most honest review of the GS mini mahogany I've seen. I've been wanting to get a GS mini after I played with my friend's GS mini rosewood. However, I didn't want another spruce top guitar as I already own a D16, D28 and 510CE. Been looking at different TH-cam reviews on the mahogany top and koa. Couldn't really decide on which until I watched your review and read your replies to questions from your viewers. I'm completely sold on the mahogany top. I'll order one online now with full confidence as they don't have any ex-stock.

I have had mine for 9 years now and LOVE it. I like it better than my 320 Koa. Playing it every day has worn out the first few frets, making the strings buzz. I ordered a new one. It should be here at any moment. The new one has a built in tuner.

Played all the GS Mini's and the mahogany mini has that warm full sound I liked without the Taylor ES Go pickup option. I installed L.R. Baggs Anthem-SL Acoustic Guitar Pickup and Microphone and a Tonewood amp. Tonewood amp installation note: due to the curvature of the mini back. The tonewood module needs to be sit almost flush with the end of the guitar. The two of them are a go anywhere great sounding package. Great video and the music your create is amazing thanks.

I didn't like the Taylor GS mini mahogany at first but that all changed when I tried different strings on it. I tend to like the Martin sound so I tried replacing the Daddario medium gauge strings with Martin light gauge retro strings. I enjoyed the sound more and found the retro strings worked great with the mahogany wood but still felt the sustain was lacking. Tried medium gauge Martin retro strings and found the sound to be perfect. Now 2 years into owning it and still love it!
I felt the gs mini mahogany sounded the best with Martin retro medium gauge strings. Feel free to experiment to your liking but just a tip for those reading.

Beautiful! Very encouraging. I'm in the process of buying the same GS Mini, and this is the best sample I've heard. I made a note to look into the LR Baggs Anthem if I upgrade to electronics in the future. I would be delighted to sound like that.
I hope you don't mind a little "accent reduction" tip. I spent years working closely with a colleague who had immigrated some twenty years earlier, co-teaching classes among other things, and he would sometimes get frustrated with students having trouble understanding certain words or phrases--we were teaching programming classes, and the frequently needed word "error" caused some trouble, for example. I am a native speaker of English from the US midwest with a background in language, and after some years trying to make my second-language Spanish and Russian sound native, I've developed and ear for it. Anyway, Jason appreciated occasional tips on his English accent, and I hope this you'll find more helpful than offensive. If I'm off the mark, feel free to educate me.
Your accent sounds much more native than my friend Jason's, and in fact I noticed you weren't a native speaker not by accent but because you said "two zero one four" for the year instead of "twenty fourteen," which obviously didn't cause any problem with understanding anyway. I did have trouble understanding one speech pattern, though: I had trouble with D's at the ends of words. In particular "chord work" sounded to me like "cort work" or maybe "cork work" and it took me several tries to parse it. I don't know your native language, but in lots of languages it's common for consonants at the ends of words to be voiceless (the difference between the pairs t-d, k-g, p-b), for example Russian, German, Korean all do this. But in English when the "d" at the end of "chord," for example, isn't voiced it can cause confusion. If your instinct is to de-voice the consonants at the ends of words, it may help to think of the last consonant as being borrowed by the next word, like "chord work" -> "core dwerk." This won't always work great, like "chord sequence" -> "core dsequence" probably doesn't help. But it's something to think about if you're inclined to think about these sorts of things.
Anyway, came for the guitar content and enjoyed it. Stayed for the interesting language issue, which says a lot more about me than you. Will be looking more at your channel. Keep 'em coming!

Very interesting detailed review Jonathon, and some of the best acoustic playing I've heard for years - truly superb.
You mentioned that you disliked the Taylor pickup system. I've had two Minis - the first was with their original model with the passive system which you had to install yourself. That was very poor and produced a weak signal which needed a fair bit of pre-amp to produce a good result. I now have a Mini (walnut) with their latest active ES2 system and I find that to me massively better. I wonder what system you had on your 2014 model.
Thanks again for such an informative and inspiring review/demo. Thumbs up. Bell rung.

  • @GuyNarnarian

I put 12s on mine accidentally - for some reason I thought it used lighter strings. Now my intonation is all messed up. I tightened the truss rod, because the action was so high with the light strings - helped but not by much. The low E string is the biggest problem, fretting the 12th fret gets you an out of tune F note. So it almost sharpens a half step when you get to the 12th fret. You are probably wondering why I just didn't put 13s back on it, well, I liked the 12s. They were easier to bend a bit especially the G string. But I'm not sure the short scale can handle the lighter strings. Might have to take it in for a setup now. Long story short - stick to the 13s. I have always played around with string guages on my acoustics, different tunings etc. and have never had this problem before.

Hello, I want to make a clarification. You mention that the GS mini has a lr baggs anthem installed, and what I see installed in the Soundhole is a lr baggs lyric, although it is of high quality but it is not the Anthem, since anthem in addition to the TRUMIC has a piezo element On Bridge. And the lyric only has the TRUMIC of Condenser. Greetings and good explanatory video. I'm a fan of guitars and onboard guitar systems.

Great playing! I have the exact same guitar but I'm not a fan of the high action with the medium gauge strings it has. Had someone at Sam Ash adjust it but it didn't really change the action. In fact I'm not even sure what I paid for. Ha! Curious to know what strings you use and how you feel about the action?

Thanks for the review, it is a really nice one! I am actually wondering in placing the LR Baggs Lyric on my mini (the ES-GO is crap and full of noises) but I heard the output sound of the lyric is quite low for staging and it is also possible to have feedback issues. What is your experience? Do you think an active DI box absolutely necessary? Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for the video, i have a gs mini too and was wondering how the anthem would sound on it, especially since it’s a smaller body guitar.
Also, i found that there are 2 types of lr baggs, the anthem and the anthem-SL. Which one do you have installed on your gs mini?

Man, I don't know what it is, but I didn't have any success with putting a an LR baggs Anthem system in my Taylor guitar. I thought it sounded worse in the stock pickup. Everybody loves that pickup system though. Makes me wonder a little bit if the person who installed it didn't know what they were doing?

Great stuff Jonathan once again. I think you just convinced me of getting one. Would this be a good one to play in a band? I have an sj200 and it's great playing solo/duo gigs because of the punch it has. Isn't treble the more wanted sound from an acoustic when in a band?

Thanks for this wonderful review and your overall channel!
I know it’s been almost a year since this video, so I’m not sure if you’ll see/reply to this, but how has the guitar been holding up? I just bought mine, but the technician who was setting it up for me made a comment on how Taylor guitars, especially the GS mini are quite prone to humidity damage, too dry or so, warped wood causing low action or whatever. Do you find your GS mini to be any more or less resilient than any other guitar when dealing with humidity or such? I didn’t see anything online that seems to speak to this as being a prevalent issue, apart from one article that talks the GS minis have not been doing well in tropical climates. Any insight would be immensely appreciated! Either way, thank you for all you do!!

    • @JonIsJustTooLoud
      @JonIsJustTooLoud  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes...Humidity is a bane of most Taylor guitars.. what I do is i keep the guitar in my room where the Air conditioning is. It keeps the room dry.✌🤓
