Moving all the specials to Up+Down has been something I've done since we were able to change them in THPS2, and it's honestly the best thing you can do for yourself. The same reason you explained missing a special grind and going into a manual, I also do for going from a "No Comply" or "Boneless" to a special from vert or ground. It basically allows me to spam the "up" button and once in the air, I can hit "down", followed by either circle or square to initiate my special. Another slight "pro tip" that I think is mentioned in this game, is that every time you do a trick, the value of that trick goes down (excluding free skate). So if a flip trick is worth 300pts, the next time you do it it'll be worth 150pt (can't remember the divider off the top of my head), and then 75pt, etc, until it's worth like 10pts. So when trying to hit a huge combo, don't keep doing the same grinds and flip tricks. Switch it up and try to use everything you can; kickflip, heelflip, pop shove-its, hard flips, impossibles, etc.
Also add 'quick U turn' for the beginners. Instead of holding left/right to go back, you can press left/right + down , R2. Doing a switch while turning makes it faster. And lastly the 'quick turn', by double tapping down together with the shoulder button.
The tip with having your special grind controls be ⬆️⬇️🔼 or ⬇️⬆️🔼 to save your combo to continue on in a manual if you miss the grind is such a great tip thanks man !
Also another advance tip that the game doesn't tell you about, you can quickly turn your character around in the opposite direction by double tapping ⬇️⬇️down then pressing the R1 trigger on Playstation.
Wow!!Thank you so much! I was literally just telling my 23 year old son that I have been really enjoying playing Tony Hawk again but I hate how if I get to close to the edge of a ramp I fall on my face without a way to stand up! I changed my specials to up down added spins to my grinds and added the boneless to my practice as well. My hand and fingers are aching today but I am now working my way through Downhill Jam. Thanks again for doing this video. I appreciate it.
I played the original games SOOOO much in my youth.. A little bit rusty, but some of my muscle memory is still there, and it's damn satisfying! I'm having such a nostalgia trip! Thanks for the tips man! Great video!
Man I am at OG player I've been playing Tony Hawk pretty much my whole life and knew you can rotate with the back buttons but I never thought to rotate while grinding. Thanks man!
You can add tricks mid grind too. Tapping (Xbox controller) XX, YY, BB mid grind it automatically adds moves without having to jump and get back to the rail. Same for manuals and lip tricks too.
Using up-down inputs versus left or right inputs to ensure a manual when you miss the rail is one I haven't heard before. With about 300hrs into this so far (plus the originals in the early 00's), I'm glad I knew all of the other tips, but it's all solid advice for people wanting to really beat this game's ass-which is really hard to do. Solid advice 👍 ➤ Quick Note: A Boneless is a No Comply when in switch-just one of those skater things. Before I got older and out of shape I used to skate, haha! Using the Boneless or No Comply is also a great way to reach higher areas with a low level character like the rooftop gaps in "Downtown", which a lot of newer players struggle with (I know I did in the old PlayStation days).
One of the first ever tip videos I've seen for any THPS that suggested clawing grind. It's something that was essential for me to become a very advanced player. Especially with the older games like THUG-THAW.
This is sort of a combo of two of his tips: use transfer button/RT/R2 off of verts that are grindable on top. That way you can do a 900 or a crazy spinning grab trick then just start grinding. And you don’t have to worry about coming in straight on the landing because you can always grind. This is the best way to start a combo for me, pop off a 900 to kick things off then just start grinding
I noticed you playing without using the analog sticks. True old school OG right there. Originals came out before the sticks became mandatory for directional movement. Gained a sub and a like for that alone!
Did you know that you can 'dismount' from a grind using the triggers? So if you're grinding vert coping you can drop straight into the vert (and follow up with a revert) without having to overbalance into it. You can also use this if (for example) you're grinding the edge of a tall building you're trying to get onto. Simply use the trigger to exit the grind on the rooftop side and roll away without having to ollie out.
Glad i am not alone😉 like does hitting revert or "r-2" as u land mean it keeps the combo going for next jump or do i have to start doing tricks while heading to the ramp🤷? Have no idea how people know what half the stuff is meant for. Ie. Do a screaming koala off this ramp but a chicken with panda pants off the inverted hexa psyphonic inclined bla bla bla🤦
@@doubledont4949 I forget how to revert, but manuals come a lot easier. I’ve improved a lot just struggle to keep high combos I end up hitting to many buttons.
I do same way as you when playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 I put the pointer finger in the triangle button. I've been doing that since Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 lol.
That's crazy that you mentioned the pointer finger hitting triangle. I haven't played this game since the oroginal, but I picked up the PS4 version and instantly remembered how to play it using the same method. You're not the only one! Lol
i felt like that trying to play resident evil 4 for the first time a few months ago. i was trying to move with the analog stick and i almost stopped playing forever and then i found out you could move with the d pad and i beat the game in one sitting.
I started on PS1 when THPS came out and dont think I've ever used an analog stick in a tony hawk game since. The only game I still cant analog stick in hahaha
I was never good at these games as a kid but I did have a great time playing them on PS1 and PS2. I just got this game and I have to re learn everything this video definitely helps 👍
I press the triangle button just like you. I have done it since the original, I feel it’s the best way for me to play. Also awesome tips! I have been doing all of those except for utilizing L1 and or R1 but now I’ll be using it more for grinds!
Biggest thing ever that I learned last week after playing since number 1.... HOLD X WHILE MANUALING TO NOT LOSE YOUR MOMENTUM AND TO MANUAL FAST! I think every tip video should mention that at least once, even if you mentioned it in another video
Couple tips, one being an addition to your up down special grind. Have two special manuals as well, also utilizing up down. That way if you don't hit your special grind, you'll still hit a special manual. More points is always good. Then, with the R2, on PS4, on top of doing transferring it also puts you up on the coping of the ramp/bowl...so if you hit triangle, on PS4, to grind, you will go into a grind instead of just landing on top of the ramp or transferring to the other side and having to land your trick. It adds a nice initial boost of score for whatever longer combo you want to do. Finally, if you're still struggling to get the 10m point run for the achievement, go to Roswell. Go in the room with the pool. You'll notice there is a gap you can constantly get going over the open section as well as another gap multiplier. Do some tricks with the bowl using reverts and manuals and then use the R2 grind technique I stated above...once you figure out where the multipliers come in, you can go around, grab the multiplier, wallplant and do a trick back into grind and come back and get the extra 2 multipliers and wallplant back around. Pretty simple and easy 3m+ combo even without max stats. Do it 3 times making sure to utilize a plethora of different tricks and you'll get it no problem.
You can also put your special manuals on up down triangle so instead of just turning your failed grind into a manual you turn it into a special manual 😜
I wonder if the trigger would be more suited for spins (and move revert/nollie to bumpers).. since the bumpers are on/off inputs where the triggers would allow you to do gradual spins so you could fine tune your landing to never be sketchy
Was waiting for the game since before release and couldnt get it til this friday. Been playing it all weekend and holy hell is boneless moree important in this game than it ever has been in any THPS I've played.
I'd suggest holding L1 or R1 while anytime your line allows a wallplant, or if you're grinding and want to do a flip trick into another grind. 180s and 360s add more to your multiplier
@@jademarks4469 best place to practice is the warehouse level, on the 3 quarter pipes when you go down the initial ramp. Grind all three and then wallplant, 360 flip trick and then repeat the process. You can easily get to a million points before your balance is affected

Make a FS 540 a special trick. You usually have enough hangtime to spin an extra 540 rotation. It results in a 13000 base score just by doing that trick. Do it as the very first trick for best results.
I see how dedicating the pointer finger for triangle/grind is advantageous, but it gives me claw-hand nightmare flashbacks even thinking about it :O Great video dude!
if it really plays like underground 1&2 than wallrides are amazing. you could use them as extensions, do tricks out of them, and use them to move around and do some tricks in some more unique ways.
Really good ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I set all my specials to up/down or down/up - so it takes no thought to do them. (Once there’s too many unlocked, I have as left/right or vice Versa).
So you actually do something kinda similiar to what I do with your grind technique only I use the middle digit of my thumb and I tap the other buttons with the tip of my thumb. One of the other things to at least just increase the multiplier is that while grinding I'll just rock my thumb rapidly between either triangle and circle or triangle and square to rapidly build up my multiplier. The thing about the L and R though I didn't realize and can probably slip that in as I just never thought "OH you can spin and land in another grind ." Thats a good tip. The "option select" is pretty nice too though the magnetism of tony hawk has always been pretty good to sticking to surfaces and grinding.
7:48 I would add recommendation of not mapping your grab and kick specials to up down or down up. Better keep them somewhere like left down so you don't inadvertently input them without the air to pull them off.
You should talk about the 180 spins on ground that makes you turn instantly, also about wallie plants that launches you up and maybe a reminder that if your special meter is full you go faster (and also if you're not on switch unless you fully upgrade it).
do not do manuals for too long, just short times. like do a manual, jump and do a kickflip(or something else) to gain distance and keep the speed up and go into manual again
Thanks for the tutorial. It really helped me take a step towards higher scores! When trying the different combos I always find myself in the situation to "run out of speed" especially when doing manuals. I know they may not be done for too long, but general question: how do i manage my speed accordingly? Any advice?
After a shitty combo you can always Olli into a manual and then do reverts (revert, balance, revert etc. ...) while doing the manual to multiply your score points. If you get it done after an outstanding combo, it really pays off.
Hang triangle with your pointer finger is exactly how I played it because that's how it was played at the time I'm glad they didn't change the mapping because that's really how I played it the whole time and am again
Hmm that triangle technique is interesting, my hands are too big for that but neat.. when it comes to the bumpers for spinning I never did that with any of the games growing up but learning to do it now.. so hard to change the way I’ve been playing this game for 21 years lol
Awesome tutorial, thank you. Any chance you could do a video of how you get a lot of points on the Phoenix Downhill jam course? Would be super appreciated as it's driving me nuts trying to get the sick score.
Great video filled with tips I would have shared if I was making this type of video. I'm an old veteran of the series as well, and use my index finger for grinding too. Lots of other people do it as well. Glad to see the series removed from Robomodo and into more capable hands. Here's to THPS 3 + 4 remakes! 🛹
I've been using this kind of weird handling where I keep my thum dead center of the button pad use X with the bottom of my 👍 and roll it up to 🔺️ but my 👍 are pretty fast 🤷♂️
I had to comment and let you know that our brains developed the same strategy in regards to how you hold your controller. I religiously played the THPS games growing up, and my friends would make fun of the goofy way I held the controller. Thought they were hilarious, they did. I also held the N64 controller in a weird way that I didn't see others do. I'd use my thumb and index finger to work the single analog stick instead of using only my thumb. What I'm trying to say is that you're not alone. There are more of us.
Yesss! Claw grip controller holders unite! Haha. It is nice to hear others have developed the same kind of strategy. Its nice to know we aren't alone. Thanks for watching and commenting. This made my day!
Out of interest, are people using the d-pad or the analog stick? I find that the analog stick makes it easier to get into manuals but wondering if I should make myself learn on the d-pad as I think it could help with specials etc. Be interested to see what other people are finding success with!
I know this is an old video, but damn, you're really good at this, i've only played this game since American Wasteland and I completely forgot how tricks worked so thanks for the tips
Wow, im playing the game after many many years and in online mode i see so high scores, I thought the others used some kind of hack :v, but now i see that im playing bad. Good tutorial i hope to improve my game.

should I use the dpad or the analog stick? dpad is easier but analog stick feels better to navigate
I like the D Pad. I feel it is more precise. Whatever is most comfortable for you is best though
Tips for keeping your speed in manual? It just seems as soon as i do it, it's impossible and slows down so fast and can't even go up a ramp
do not do manuals for too long, just short times. like do a manual, jump and do a kickflip(or something else) to gain distance and keep the speed up and go into manual again
Inward Heelflip and 180 flips seems to help when u losing speed.
@@charles3000ify kickflip was an example, it doesn't matter what flip you do
Hold your jump button before you manny and keel holding it
Thx 4 the input, that REALLY helped!
Very good Gameplay left 👍👍👍keep em coming🔥🔥🔥🔥
Man thank you so much im a oldschool THPK gamer and you just help me a lot with this vid, thank you sir. 💪🏼🤟🏻
Very cool! Thanks for watching. I am glad it helped.
I do lip tricks with my pointer finger, I should practice with grinds. Good tip.
Thanks for the tutorial. It really helped me take a step towards higher scores! When trying the different combos I always find myself in the situation to "run out of speed" especially when doing manuals. I know they may not be done for too long, but general question: how do i manage my speed accordingly? Any advice?
Grinding (especially a few short grinds) can increase your speed. But I kinda suck and have this problem quite often too xD
After a shitty combo you can always Olli into a manual and then do reverts (revert, balance, revert etc. ...) while doing the manual to multiply your score points. If you get it done after an outstanding combo, it really pays off.
Thanks for making this video, I learned a lot.
Hang triangle with your pointer finger is exactly how I played it because that's how it was played at the time I'm glad they didn't change the mapping because that's really how I played it the whole time and am again
I’m just now getting the game, it’s been so long since I’ve played. Went straight into online play and got smashed, thanks bro 😂🙏🏾
Welcome back to the game! I am glad you found the video. Thanks for watching!!
Hmm that triangle technique is interesting, my hands are too big for that but neat.. when it comes to the bumpers for spinning I never did that with any of the games growing up but learning to do it now.. so hard to change the way I’ve been playing this game for 21 years lol
Great tips and presented very clearly. Subbed!
it's incredible that no one on the entirety of you tube explains how to actually chain tricks to get a combo in this game
OG teaching me bout this game. Definitely picking this up soon💯👍🏾
Awesome tutorial, thank you. Any chance you could do a video of how you get a lot of points on the Phoenix Downhill jam course? Would be super appreciated as it's driving me nuts trying to get the sick score.
Start base building in halfpipe and keep combo building with specials.
This is a good video - it helped me realize what I could be doing better. Really helpful tips! Thank you. :)
Awesome! Thanks for watching. I hope 3 and 4 get remade also. It would be great.
@@Gamingwithgleez Really hoping for Underground 2. Such a great game. Have a nice day!
I've been using this kind of weird handling where I keep my thum dead center of the button pad use X with the bottom of my 👍 and roll it up to 🔺️ but my 👍 are pretty fast 🤷♂️
these tips really helped me out thank you!
Autism is real.
Well said. thanks
Thanks for watching!
thanks dude hopefully i'll no longer embarrass myself in the multiplayer \m/
Out of interest, are people using the d-pad or the analog stick? I find that the analog stick makes it easier to get into manuals but wondering if I should make myself learn on the d-pad as I think it could help with specials etc. Be interested to see what other people are finding success with!
I think Dpad is the way to go, it’s just not reliable to get into manuals with the stick, just need to get used to playingwith the dpad.
I know this is an old video, but damn, you're really good at this, i've only played this game since American Wasteland and I completely forgot how tricks worked so thanks for the tips
Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words. I am glad you found the video.
Yoo this a game changer 💪🏾💪🏾🙌🙌
These helped me out a lot, great vid
I didn’t know Kermit the frog did tutorials for THPS! Thanks!
You mean Patrick Mahomes?
Or if you have an elite pad or a pad with back burtons then setting one to grind would be a good idea
Wow, im playing the game after many many years and in online mode i see so high scores, I thought the others used some kind of hack :v, but now i see that im playing bad. Good tutorial i hope to improve my game.
great tips, thank you!
Very helpfull thanks! I was Playing like mad the original games and never knew bout those things, glad they make it to the internet era 😂
Been using pointer finger to grind since the first game :D
Great tips, thanks!
Thanks! This was a great video! Quick question...how do you pogo?
Double Y on Xbox so Triangle on PS I think...they ruin combos though.
