Jungle Paddock: Sheep on Rye and Vetch

  • The winter rye I overseeded our pastures with last fall has gotten nearly 5 feet tall (the vetch is tall but not THAT tall)! I need to get the sheep on it so they can eat and mow the grass but they are on the other side of our property right now. I have to move them across our driveway using alfalfa pellets to incentivize them to follow me.
    Some sheep decide to go another way so Little Buddy and I use our shepherd's crooks to wrangle the sheep back to their paddock.

    For beings that don't like tall grass, they seem to be managing very well! Trampling all that lovely organic matter down to the soil.
    What a difference a year makes; your pastures are so lush compared to last year. Well done!

    • @argentvixen
      @argentvixen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, even if they don't eat very much if it, trampling it will definitely help the pasture anyway. And following with the chickens a few days later "Salatin" style, I'd be curious to see if that would work in this particular case. I love being able to see this progression in real time. Thanks Dan!

    I saw some research that demonstrated how palatability in rye declines rapidly beginning in late April, accelerating into May. A youtube brief out of Univ. of Nebraska suggests you want to graze rye when it hits the right height. Their recommendation is at 6 to 8 inches.

      lastniceguy1 goats won't eat the rye any better than the sheep do. The goats would just eat the good stuff the sheep like first. Goats are browsers, and prefer broad leaf plants, so the vetch would disappear in a short while with goats and leave nothing for the sheep.

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead

      I gave them organic alfalfa pellets. The local farm co-op ordered them for me. I think you can get them through Azure Standard also but they are more expensive there (I believe). The peas I gave them were actual whole field peas I got from a local organic farmer.

  • @mandiegarrett1706

    I saw on your other TH-cam video stating that alfalfa grass is good for sheep so I found some alfalfa grass bale sold locally. I ask them if its good for sheep and they said "not really". They told me that sheep likes grass hay but here you give them alfalfa pellets...so alfalfa grass bale must be good for them.
    I wanted to ask them if they raise sheep but don't want to be rude. Please clarify...thank you.

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
