      @@MixedbyToryG It’s a worthwhile effort. It can make it much, much smoother. I don’t like to spend a lot on new old stock (NOS) tubes. I try to find then when they’re a good price (about $20 each for the 12AX7 and $10 for the 12AU7). The single one I have has NOS Mazda. The 2 I have on order will have Sylvania long plates.

    • @AtTheSourceStudios
      @AtTheSourceStudios 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DelmarJones I put them on mix bus so two is needed. Otherwise you could use two or even more maybe on guitar bus, bass, vocals. Pultecs are great! I ended up going with the WA-EQPs but I remember being very happy with the KTs too.
      When getting into more analog gear you'll need to make sure you have enough I/O and expandability. I recommend the Tascam US-20x20 interface which has adat expansion for 20in and 20 out or any of the Motu AVB interfaces for more money but are expandable beyond normal means via linking multiple interfaces via the AVB connection.

    Nice ... However and Im quoting...Mix bus compression only works if you are mixing INTO the compressor, not just adding it at the end. The compressor changes the dynamics and tone of the entire mix. Adding it at the END of your mix will change everything you've been working on. It doesn't matter what compression settings you put on there.

    • @AtmKrown
      @AtmKrown 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      U wrong my boy . In my opinion. Do sum more research. I wouldn’t mix into nothin. Mastering is a separate process meant for after da mix is good.

    • @MixedbyToryG
      @MixedbyToryG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know I’ve always been curious as to why people continued believe that mixing thru the bus comp is detrimental to the song. The only reason I can think of any benefit is to gain some slight coloration from the transformers inside the unit (which I’ve done), but to have the ratio, attack and release preset each time doesn’t make sense as not every song is the same and has the same dynamics. I would even argue that dialing in the compressor settings after you’ve achieved what you need during the bulk of the processing is best mainly for that last bit of control and glue. Why? I have found that every song is unique so why not tailor the bus comp to complement (I.e. setting the the attack and release closer to the tempo) the song in an artistic way - not just in a technical sense. For me, it allows me to compress, glue and allow some extra flavor at the end of a mix.

    • @DERAILENTERTAINMENT1
      @DERAILENTERTAINMENT1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MixedbyToryG Not detrimental.. Time saving.. Dial in the Sound as you mix.. Thats the only factor that Ive found.. Time is $.. Keep on Jammin Fam!!!

      @@MixedbyToryG from what I’ve been told by some engineers is that they mix into the bus compressor because they do something called top down mixing which is where you do broad strokes first such as the mix bus and drum busses and things like that and then you’ll go in and mix the individual tracks. They say if you put the bus compressor on first after you do your levels it’ll somewhat “glue” the whole mix together and it’ll help with shaping your low end especially in the mix because if you decide to compress afterwards it might make it sounds a little muddy. That’s just what some of them say of course there are no set rules to any of this. :)

    • @dariennewsome7441
      @dariennewsome7441 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Either way is OK. You mix into a compressor to already have an idea of the end sound, which yes, the compressor does change the tone, however the down sides is that because your level in constantly changing in the mix (cutting, boosting, adding fx, ect...) you'll be changing the level into the compression, which if you don't know what you're doing, could make you make weird mix decisions; those changes are radical. Using the compression at the end of the mix will give the sound of the compressor, but with any tonal changes all you have to do is tweak those certain things in the mix, which imo opens up my compressor even more more. I mix and master in the same session, so i have control of every aspect. Either way is fine, it's just a personal taste/preference; comes down to how you mix and hear music. If you only have the two track mix that you're mastering, then there are very small finite moves You can make when mastering at all, because you don't want to cause too many changes; you'll collapse the mix; in mastering the less you do the better tbh. If something changes in the master that needs to be addressed in the mix, well then that's a shortcoming of the mix. Thats OK though, because you'll never get it right the first time, and you start noticing changes that need to be made also when you reference on different sound devices, so you have to be very careful with what you do in the master. As a mastering engineer, all you are trying to do is give a slight touch up to the song; you are not the mix engineer, you're just the icing on top. Having access to the mix also while mastering is truly best, if you top down mix into the compressor or not; that is what really makes a difference. It's all about control. There is no right or wrong, only less control. If you mix or master and you do the same things every time, you'll be wrong a lot. It's part of learning to engineer, to really use your ears. You truly understand that concept when you've gained the experience.

      Thanks brother!
      So my drum bus comes out at between -6 and -3 at the most. Music, vocals and bass come in some where under that. All together it’s usually around -3 then I can control the level with the trim knob on the DBOX on how hard I want it to pass through the comps and eqs. By the time it comes back I’m looking at -3 after gain matching with about 3 to 4db of gain reduction.
