Dear Sam, one of the most enjoyable Waking Up segments for me is the very one you present here. My awareness leveled-up back then... and recently, I have seen more leveling-up... perceiving the present, I perceive the draw of the "gravity" of the "mind loop mechanism" all while remaining present. ...and that "gravity" has less strength each day. Been doing ChiKung and meditation for 20 years now. The voice does eventually go away, and all that is left is pristine clear awareness with no labels. It’s what I call my “reset” mode. The fountain of youth, the emptiness before thought arises like bubble. Eventually the voice stops all together. Our western chasing of materialism has caused a lot of suffering in the world. I came back from Iraq 2003 knowing I wasn’t going to be able to get help from the VA. So I researched every religion on the earth and eastern medicine. I cannot wait until these modalities are more widely accepted. I can get Accupuncture at a VA hospital now. The tide is turning. My girlfriend is currently going through (very likely) fatal cancer. We are in our 30s. She is very convinced death is coming soon, and is pushing the world and me away. This has caused immense sadness in me, I have to will myself to stop crying on my way to work, and I don't know what I can do here. I don't have a strategy into handling this and I default into withdrawing from everything and everyone. I would like to be able to meditate around/through this, but I fear really contemplating it, and I also don't want to "let go" of it. But something must give here. How can I use meditation as a tool to get me through this? Thank you for your wisdom you have given me over the years, long time enjoyer of your presence in the world
Malcolm I’m so sorry to hear this. Thank you for sharing your story. I hope you can find the guidance you need, and I hope your girlfriend too will not push you away. I don’t know you, but I am praying for you. I believe in Christ and His mercy for us.
Sorry about your girlfriend's condition. In case you haven't already done so, look into some of the readily available things you can get to eliminate cancer as talked about continually by the "conspiracy theorists" of the past 4 years. There is a good chance her fate does not have to be fatal. But that means doing things that boost the immune system in it's war with the cancer rather than compromising the immune system further. I am no doctor... but many doctors are no doctors either.
I wish I had the right words if, there were any, to console you. Your girlfriend doesn't deserve this and neither do you. You both are in my thoughts and heart. Sincerely, I wish you both the best.
Malcom. I'm not religious, nor I do believe in alternative pseudoscience medicine but please do what you wish. I would say talk to any doctors you can, chase results, push your health care system as much as you can. Do all you can to get the best treatment for your partner. Don't give up and no matter how hard it seems, please keep a positive outlook for the both of you. My thoughts are with you both.
I'm so sorry. I can't possibly understand what you're going through at this moment, but yes, I think meditation can help (it does for me in difficult times). Have you tried the Waking up App? They have a section called "SOS", with a few short meditations for "life's crisis moments". You can learn to no longer identify with your thoughts, and you can experience a sort of distance from them that can help you feel equanimity. In this moment, now, you can find some relief. Gently notice your breath, and when painful thoughts arise, just gently notice them as appearances within consciousness and return to the breath.
I adore that illustration! Thoughts Without a Thinker. It describes it perfectly for me. I used to have these dissociative moments where I'd be in front of a mirror, talking to myself, and then I'd disappear into the mirror and I'd be in the mirror talking to THAT guy outside.
