I was given this old tractor pto powered orchard mower by a kind gentleman who no longer had a use for it. I don't really need a mower but my 6km driveway is overgrown with trees, so I mounted the mower on the hough 30 forks and turned it into a hedge trimmer. It will also be useful in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

Well then. I think that it's probably best for all humanity that Marty's a quiet Kiwi with lots to do around his domicile. If he was supposed to be building weapons I can only imagine that the resulting creations would be 1) rusty, 2) made of surplus parts, 3) highly effective, & 4) terrifying in every way.
There's a reason why only one Bob Semple tank was made. The war time NZ govt. knew that deploying them on the battlefield would mean invasion from all sentient races in the galaxy to attempt to damage one.

Marty is there any damn thing you can't fabricate, repair or modify to meet your needs? You sir have some major skills. And your son is absolutely precious. Cherish these years he is young. Our kids grow up much too soon.

What's unique about it. Trimming trees /hedges along roads and access ways is common there are companies which that is all they do. All he's done is make a homemade very budget friendly version of the machines they use.

Such a tractor implement already is on the market. It is used to trim tree and shrub branches that extend over country dirt roads.
Well done! Didn't expect anything less. Suggestion, add a couple of guide bars projecting out from the leading edge of the mower body. These could be angled to gather in more branches. Love your channel and love the Malbrough Sounds. Use to drive the long way to Picton via Queen Charlotte, just for the scenery.

I always get a good chuckle when I see the latest home-grown creations. Mad Max vehicles probably weren't nearly so well engineered as what you put together from such a variety of available parts. We had similar "bush-hogs" mounted on hydraulic arms on road graders when I lived in Tennessee, made for the exact same purpose (trimming growth back either on steep ditches down low or vertically above fence lines or powerline right-of-ways). I'd love to be around 100 years from now to see the "what-the-..." look on someone's face when they discover this! Glad to see the Fiat's mower given a second life :)))
Mad Max hedge trimmer. 😂🤣 Your ingenuity and adaptability simply amaze me! You take old stuff and using scrap materials you have available create a thousands (if not 10s of 1000s) of dollars attachment. Your channel is one of my favorites. Thank you for the great videos. 👍

Brutally effective. Your resourcefulness is astonishing.
Marty, just wanted to make a quick suggestion from my own experience that might help you out next time you’re trying to remove the blade plate or stump jumper plate from the bottom of the gear box. A little heat with a torch around the inside edge of the plate around the shaft will make it expand making it easier to remove and also help release some of the rust that bonds it to the shaft. But be careful not to over heat and cause damage to the shaft or internal components of the gear box assembly!
Marty the master of recycling. It is good to see that health and safety have been and approved the guard; it will save you a trip to A&E!

Seeing that Hough payloader brought back memories from my very early childhood, my grandfather had one, and as a tiny little 5 year old it seemed like the biggest machine in the world. I always wanted to play on it but it was always full of bees

That mower conversion is what we would call a real “Rube Goldberg” device here in the “Colonies” but if it works, don’t disparage (knock) it! And, any of our government safety and health people (OSHA) who saw it would have a significant coronary event!

Health and safety people see the conventional flail or hammer ķnife trimmer OK. This is no different. A bit less guarding but much the same.

Gosh this bought back memories with the Butler Bros here in Taranaki 50 -70 years back. They bought army surplus Bren gun carriers, trucks for sweeps, fabricating hedge trimmers such as yours, but swinging 10ft blades. There business was cutting the gorse and barbary hedges here in Taranaki, world famous for there "Heath Robinson" contraptions. Hedge bits were thrown hundreds of feet in the air, and with only a basic cage over the cab!. the noise and sight of these things working was a sight to behold. Are you related???
I love all this kiwi backyard engineering! I’m from London but have lived in NZ for 25 years now. I had my NZ passport for years before I became a true kiwi. It was the day I fixed my broken petrol flymo mower with a piece of no.8 wire I found in the shed.
Here in the states there is a company called Lane Shark brush cutter that makes exactly what you built except it's adjustable and runs off tractor hydraulics.
I think you're correct in needing a bit more horsepower, also higher rpm's as those branches give way quickly, get 'em cut before they deflect. A great use of on-hand materials .
Yep, Marty, for the first time I am genuinely frightened of something you've put together!! Good watching though, and that grillwork brush guard on the old loader had me chuckling. Those tapered roller-bearings in the drive hub will probably lose their pre-load again, unless something is stopping them walking along the shaft. Shims which bear on the inner-race of the bottom bearing and are held there by the bottom plate would do the job. Setting the pre-load might be tricky but I think an end-float of about 0.007" would be a good place to start. End-float allows the bearings to not become too tight when the shaft gets hot and expands.
I love how you gave a nod to the personal protective equipment safety nanny crowd in some of your shots.

Brilliant! You might also be able to cobble together a coupler mount and run it on the dipper of your excavator to go after the taller limbs.

Marty, some years ago I was talking to a bloke cutting firewood at a bush mill. He had a 4 cylinder motor driving the firewood blade and was in the process of converting to a V8 as he would lose momentum too quickly. Hi did the conversion but it was not much better. Problem was there was not enough mass in the flywheel in either petrol engine. Tractor flywheels are quite large things so that takes care of the slasher on the back of a tractor. Just a suggestion but you may need a heavy flywheel which ever way you jump. Cheers mate.

Your ingenuity with machinery is exceeded only by your determination in seeing it through. Fantastic trimmer you've made there!!
I would go with the hydraulic option - an orbital motor driving into the right angle gearbox. The pressure relief valve will allow you to protect against overload. The on-off valve at your hand in the cab will make it a lot safer. Rather than add power, you might be better off adding flywheel inertia - on the actual blade holding hub. Well done!

You answered my quiet question as to why not a bigger engine to be able to cut / trim larger branches (at a higher motor speed).

Absolutely brilliant.. description spoken beautifully. This has inspired me to make a small pedestrian one out of a flymo ,a generator and it's on two wheel chair wheels for brambles that grow out of a Cornish hedge. It's going on u tube too. Many thanks from Cornwall UK.
Your work reminds me of my early life in the logging camps in the Clearwater drainage in central Idaho during the late 1940s, early 50s. I was about the age of your boy, watching my dad do similar stuff on the skid Cats (D6)... 🥲🤓👍
Interesting build the bearings are heavy duty but designed to be facing down not sideways so if there’s going to be an issue that might be it otherwise very cool build.

I think what you've done is awesome and I'm always impressed, but given the challenge of upgrades to tackle bigger branches, and seeing the driveway and what's required, I think you'd be better off replacing those 4 x slasher blades with a dam big circular saw blade like on your timber mill. That'll cut and lop branches merrily along the driveway! As always thanks for sharing!

One of my greatest memories as a young lad was back in the 60's when the "hedge cutter gang" turned up to trim the barberry hedges on the farm. Now this was in the days before hydraulic motors so everything was driven by big wide belts running off the PTO's. Now these machines were all homemade and really looked like something out of Mad Max. I have searched high and low for photo's of them but with no luck. I would have been 7 or 8 the last time I ever saw them and was totally fascinated by both them and the guys that operated them. The sound of those huge swinging blades has stayed with me always. I'm in New Zealand and in my 60's. Love this channel, cheers Marty

A few years ago, a local guy here fitted a hydraulic powered 5-6 ft mill saw to the arm of an excavator and made good coin trimming cypress fence line trees.
Rumour has it all stopped when the blade came off and finished over a kilometer away.
When the apocalypse comes, I'm moving to NZ to live with Marty. In my next life I'm coming back as Marty's son.
Several things come to mind first off when Dad turned his contraption by hand his son took off running ..... away lol. just because you can doesn't mean you should ( 2 guys after a few beers figured they could use the lawn mower to trim the hedge, start the lawn mower one on each side, pick it up TA DA 2 fingerless guys!!! and lastly, ever hear of a pole saw?

It’s Fantastic. In the uk my mums and dads house backs onto a railway in a cutting with trees either side. About 2am my Dad woke to a right racket and lights in the railway cutting. Next morning he looked and found tree branches smashed and chewed off, probably with something similar to your machine. Three days later in the post was a letter saying to expect some railway maintenance work overnight!!!!
here in California the orchard mowers trim the tops of the trees and sides laser guided the ground mowers are a different breed nice job of repurposing!
