Damon Lindelof said this episode was born out of a writers room chat where they came up with the craziest shit and tried to work it into the show. Long live Frasier
In case you're interested in a translation of the French at the start of the episode (presumably said by the submariner) : I'm the only hope The last defense of a species about to go extinct The "warlocks" warned us These clairvoyant sages saw the truth They said the creatures would come 7 years after the first ones were taken 7 years after the departure We were blind of the gods We are now on the edge of the ravine On the edge of destruction When this monster is born we are done for Because this monster will be born to end us 7 heads and 7 flaming mouths We have one last hope, the egg From the warlock maps I found it Hidden in a nest, in a volcano in the sea Thank god for the technology The nuclear weapon To break the fragile shell and melt the demons inside God, may this missile fly straight and find the nest in the volcano And hopefully this egg wouldn't have hatched yet, and let it destroy it before it destroys the world.
Perhaps the man that Kevin met in the bridge and guided him through karaoke wasn't David Burton, but his identical twin brother. Jesus and David Burton.
If ever anyone was to doubt that Matt paralleled Job... they need only to watch this ep. Talk about your faith being tested. And him so desperately trying to hold on to it. Needless to say, I was thrilled when the a**hole got shredded by the lion.
I'm pretty sure it was shot at least partially in Australia. I met one of the extras from the library scene in the last episode and she said they shot it in that city's library.
As much as I absolutely loved LOST, I honestly think that after viewing season 3, The Leftovers was way more impactful and personal of a show. It's so powerful and touching. UGH. I wish I could watch it again for the first time.
The religious symbolism in this episode is simultaneously about the biblical God and the Olympian gods. They are in the LAND DOWN UNDER (hell, underworld) on a FERRY (Charon's ferry?), crossing from Tasmania (home of the DEVIL and originally Van DIEMEN's Land). David Burton likes the TOP DECK (Heaven, Mt. Olympus), but it's "LONELY ON THE MOUNTAIN" (his book). Burton throwing the man off the top deck can be God casting LUCIFER from heaven, or Zeus throwing HEPHAESTUS off Mt. Olympus. Burton was an OLYMPICS announcer, who medaled in the decathlon. The HAMMER THROW is the one you can't remember. The HAMMER is the symbol of HEPHAESTUS.
Neil ever put together Burton was the guy helping Kevin at the bridge and hotel to sing? Also he seemed to have given Matt a super hard punch after the guy in the bathroom said he's seen God smite many man on the deck 😅 Another theory is he's actually the Devil 'Tasmanian Devil', and he seemed to have some control in the underworld where Kevin visits..
Did Matt truly believe that man was God? I feel like he hated him posing, as he said. That maybe, in a moment of doubt, he just played into it. Kinda like, "Damn. Maybe I'm wrong... what if I'm wrong". Then, "No I wasn't wrong. But I'm gonna calm my ass down... Way down". ("Man gets destroyed by an animal certainly isn't God. Wtf was I thinking?") Then peace ensues.
when u started saying what do u believe matt, what do u believe, all that came to mind was Poppy's "Blood Money" give it a listen ♥ (and then let me know) (ps: the video adds to the song)
I'm sure it was meant to be completely ambivalent and it shouldn't be possible to decide whether Burton was God or not. Matt asking him like he was, might have been to expose him being a fraud, but his answers forced him to go along with it. When in the final scene Matt said that he was going to die, I think it's proven that he did not believe in being healed by God and was satisfied to see Burton being killed by the lion. But his last words I suppose are meant to be ambivalent again, because "the guy he was telling about" could also mean God. Or isn't he all of his life telling people about God? Finally Burton being killed by the lion is also somehow ambivalent. It could be a reverence to Nietzsche (God is dead - being killed by the idol of a sex cult) or proving Burton is just a human. PS: I really enjoy your reactions to this show, Neil. In every episode you mention something I didn't think about. Thanks! 👌 (I apologize for my grammar!)
"That's the guy I was telling you about" is the best closing line in television history.
Close second: As God as my witness I thought turkeys could fly.
@@johnm.2633 where is that from ?
David Burton was the guy in the bar that had Kevin sing karaoke to go home. the Homeward Bound scene. 😊
Its hard to recognize him with the beard, but David Burton was the guy on the bridge in "International assassin"
This is not an episode. It's an experience.

I'm the only hope
The last defense of a species about to go extinct
The "warlocks" warned us
These clairvoyant sages saw the truth
They said the creatures would come 7 years after the first ones were taken
7 years after the departure
We were blind of the gods
We are now on the edge of the ravine
On the edge of destruction
When this monster is born we are done for
Because this monster will be born to end us
7 heads and 7 flaming mouths
We have one last hope, the egg
From the warlock maps I found it
Hidden in a nest, in a volcano in the sea
Thank god for the technology
The nuclear weapon
To break the fragile shell and melt the demons inside
God, may this missile fly straight and find the nest in the volcano
And hopefully this egg wouldn't have hatched yet, and let it destroy it before it destroys the world.

The final six episodes were all filmed in Australia.
Man the Matt episodes are my favorite of the series

Yeah LOST had a much larger pop culture impact, but I'm of the opinion that Leftovers is way above LOST in terms of quality.
Thats the guy he was telling us about. That was God, and he's dead. Fucking brilliant episode and writing.
And in-universe, he could come back again. God is both dead and not dead. It is indeed brilliant writing, kinda breaks the brain 🤯
Dude the shots and locations on this show particularly this season are just second to none. Even surreal in some instances.

The Lion story is true, I looked it up immediately after the episode aired. I love how he shames the sex cult and ruins their fun! So Matt.
Man, this episode
the episode title is a reference to the original rat race movie: It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. classic, one of the best comedies ever made

The question is, did David run to save all those people from the lion or he was just unluck?

So glad someone else picked up on the Nietzsche reference. Either way you view Matt's frame of mind, the allusion was very deliberate by the writers.
Great discussion!
oh I also remember, since this episode was right after the Evie fake out, I was trying to figure out if God was real or if Matt was just imagining him
Red hat! Red shoes?
I love cooking shows but I've never watched this one. Might have to give it a try.

For free will to exist, it must be built on a foundation of randomness and chance.
Otherwise, it's pointless.
Embrace Chaos. Amen XD
OMG, stop. Nothing has anything to do with Lost. Ever.
