I am using a travel 70400 nothing fancy but I can't get my phone to stay on the adapter,as it doesn't have a tighten mechanism rather than a spring mechanism:(
I have been using my smartphone to take pictures and videos of the moon and the planets. I have had a lot of fun and no problem taking pictures of the moon, but the planets have driven me crazy! Now I have a rather inexpensive small beginner refractor which has a focal length of 700 mm x 60 mm (not sure what the 60 mm means). I bought a 3x barlow lens and a 2x barlow lens along with a 16 mm and 10 mm lens to go along with the 20 mm & 6.5 mm lens that came with the scope. I use a Samsung phone and I use the auto focus feature and zoom feature to take my pics and videos. The problem is that no matter what I use, when observing the planets (Jupiter, Saturn and Mars) all I'm getting is a blob of white light. Sometimes I use filters (blue, green, yellow and red) but again I get nothing but blots of blue, green, yellow or red dots (some larger in size if I increase the magnification) but never much of anything else. I have gotten some cool looking videos of Saturn (after trying for almost two months) but again, the images are small (understandable due to the quality of telescope I'm using) and all of them are out of focus, and look awful! I've tried using PIPP and Registax, but still don't get very good images at all. Is there anything I can do to improve this situation or do I just need to accept I bought the wrong telescope and just get something bigger and better next time?
Thank you for such a detailed comment walking me through your setup. The 60mm for your telescope tells you how wide the aperture, basically how much light it is letting in. With your size telescope, I would set a realistic limit of about 75x magnification on most nights. A 10mm lens would get you 70x magnification: (700mm focal length divided by 10mm eyepiece.) I would start by not using the barlow lens for imaging and attempting to connect your camera using the 10mm eyepiece. I also have some videos that cover the basics of pipp, autostakkret and registax that can help you out a bit. Don't give up on your telescope just yet, I started with a 60mm refractor and enjoyed views of the Moon and planets with it before moving up to a larger telescope. I used my Redmi 4x and Celestron 76AZ. It works marvelously well on Lunar and Planetary. I used AS3 and Registax 6 to process the image and Lightroom for finishing. It really inspired me to become an astrophotographer someday!

Thanks for providing the tip of attaching the adapter to a lens first and then centering the camera by holding the lens up to a light! I kept trying to do it in the dark by mounting the adapter to the lens mounted directly on the telescope and was finding it difficult to get it centered. Also I see you have images of Jupiter taken with an iPhone 6, which I thought was not possible because of the lack of being able to adjust the camera for night sky viewing. It's one reason I bought a iPhone 12; just for its night mode for astrophotography. You however, pointed out that you use a third party app to adjust the ISO and shutter speed. Wish I'd known that months ago. So thanks again for providing all these helpful tips!!!!
I appreciate your thoughtful comment! The night mode on the new iphone is designed for longer exposure images of the faint open sky. The planets are so bright that you want to take quick pictures or even video of them making older iphones work just fine.
So excited to try the method from this video. I was stuck doing the exact same thing as you and getting so frustrated! I finally got my laser sight and setup sorted out and saw Jupiter's bands, moons, and the rings of Saturn for the first time. Can't wait to play with the camera.
I was finally able to see jupiter through my telescope I got earlier this week. I want to add my phone to it to get a video of it. Space truly is beautiful.

Glad I found you. For 2 nights in a row I came back inside house disappointed because I couldn't take a picture. Phone even fell off of adapter at one point and chipped top corner of phone. Augh. Thanks.I am going to try out this adapter.The one I have been using has a telescoping fitting to attach to the eyepiece and it is always falling off. Bad design (and it was recommended in an article in Astronomy magazine!) The other nice thing about this one is it looks like you can attach the holder to the eyepiece, put the eyepiece in and focus and then put the phone in.

BTW, I am using my iPhone X with a Gosky adapter. My telescope is a Orion Star Blaster 6/6i my past scopes were always smaller and could only really view the moon. I just saw your video and I am interested in astrophotography with my iPhone. Long ago would take long exposure shots within 0M-1 camera, often exposing over 30 minutes to an hour, but this was tedious in constantly adjusting a tracking starin a lens reticule. That was before the iPhone. I have a Celestron 8 telescope I will use. Thank you for your helpful tips.

@@LateNightAstronomy Unfortunately this adapter doesn't work with my Samsung S21. The lens piece sits perfectly where the power button is so every time I tighten it up it shuts the phone off. The other issue I experienced is the weight of this product. It's a bit heavy for my Meade Starfinder Dobsonian and I'm finding I have to adjust the mount for it all the time. Too many domino effects just to make it work. Otherwise cool if you got a regular scope and older phone that doesn't have the power button on the sides.

Thank for easy to do videos....I use a Samsung s53 and celestron astro master 130. It's hard to take a good picture, like fog in the middle and very small round picture in the middle. I just keep on trying to make it better
i have been using mobile for astrophotography for past 3 years... i use meade ng-60sm telescope and moto g5s plus... i don't have adapter so i cutout a mobile cover of the size of eyepiece and use it... trust me works great...
I have an Orion TX8, the phone adapter that cam with it is a cheap one, but it works. I use an IPhone 14 and the few pictures I’ve taken are really amazing. Can’t wait to get better at it.
Use the count-down timer to trip the electronic shutter. Tapping the phone to release the shutter will result in blur every single time...without exception...due to the entire camera/telescope/tripod/mount system vibrating with the finger's force. So, once all adjustments have been made and you're ready to commence taking images, open up the app and find the time-delay function, set it for at least five full seconds, not less (trust me, scopes take at least four seconds to dampen oscillations and vibration that WILL be deleterious to your final images), and then tap the shutter. Be critical of your first two or three images. If they still appear blurry, try adding another five full seconds of count-down (10 seconds). You'll be surprised how much that helps.
I use voice commands so there is no shaking. It also has an astro camera application for Android that automatically takes a series of photos with more adjustment options (including calibration flat and dark frames). In the pro mode of the regular smartphone camera, more parameters can be adjusted even better. It is good to use a filter to remove the near-infrared spectrum, since most smartphone cameras register near-IR, which blurs the images.
I just bought one on ebay and can't wait to use it! I am new with telescopes and I have a beginners F300 70m telescope that came with 6mm, F12mm and 20mm eyepieces, 3x barlow

@@LateNightAstronomy I was having a little trouble connecting my eyepiece to the adapter you know where you tighten that screw to get the eyepiece in the adapter. it's not like screwing all the way to hold it in place. I'm wondering if this adapter that I bought is specifically for bigger telescopes
That is a great point. I have a new phone coming in and am going to have to experiment with that. I believe some companies allow you to choose which lens in the settings but I don't know if Apple does that for the iPhone.
Just bought an Orion XT8 Dob. Friend made a 3d printer frame for my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Your tips were very helpful. I'm a novice at the iPhone imaging via scope so a lot to learn.

Also, I tried imaging Mars (2.5x barlow, 16mm eyepiece, your adapter recommendation, and iPhone 8) but it looked like a bright blurry mess. I'd love to follow your other tutorial on processing a short video, but I imagine it needs to show up clearly on the phone before it's even worth processing? Keep up the awesome content man!
Thanks for your kind words and feedback! Mars right now is moving away from us and quite a bit smaller than it was in October. Give your technique a try on Jupiter and Saturn later this year and I think you will have more pleasing results! Let me know if you have anymore questions.
Thanks for your videos! One tip on this for others, invest in a $10 remote shutter for your phone to avoid bumping the scope. BTW, your planetary imaging tutorial was really helpful, as post-processing gets a little overwhelming. And your tip on how to zoom digitally to get better focus is a life saver when using an DSLR for imaging. Thank you! As for the smart phone adapter, to align to my lens the unit clamps right on my power and volume buttons -- frustrating! I've got a Samsung and have been researching on how to disable the buttons but no success. Anyone come across a way to overcome that?
I appreciate your comment and am glad you find the videos helpful. A remote shutter is a great tool (I use one for my DSLR). Most phones also will have a time delay feature for taking the pic. Set that to 2 or 3 seconds and you should be fine as well when taking a phone pic!

Glad you enjoyed the video. Right now I use the built in camera app for my phone. I would encourage you to look for an app that has a free version to try out and includes fine tune features like shutter speed and iso. The more manual you can adjust and test things out the better!
Got my Celestron Nexyz yesterday, and my plans was to use it with my new TS Optics 20*80 ED triplet binoculars to take some pics on moon, guess what weather came....😱🤯🤬

Thanks so much! I would use the regular camera because that tends to be the one that is best for low light conditions. Give both a try if you can, although I know that may require shifting things around a bit.
I’ve just got my first telescope from my wife & get my phone mount tomorrow 22nd so hoping for better weather in the UK, could you suggest an iPhone app to improve my pictures. Congrats on your telescope!!! I normally just use the built in camera app but have also dabbled in Raw+. Hey nice video! At the end you're talking about using a third party app for better exposure and iso settings. What apps would you recommend? I'm using a Google Pixel 6a. I have right now a Sirius Plossl 25mm on a 1200 aperture Orion Skyquest xt6 and planning on buying a 12.5mm. Would it be fine with the adapter in terms of quality? I've been told that a 12mm would be the maximum I can go with the aperture I have before losing on quality for planets and distant objects.
Yeah, a 12mm would be a nice buy for that scope but I bet on some clear steady nights you could push it up to around 150x on most nights with an 7, 8 or 9mm eyepiece. I rarely go over 200x even with a larger 8 inch dobsonian. Orion looks to have their Edge on planetary eypieces on sale right now too! As for the app, I have used RAW for the iphone and assumer they have a similar version for Android. Honestly though, android may let you control a lot of the manual things like iso and shutter without an addtional app.

As for the app, I found that ProCam X Lite on android to be a good app for taking photos and videos buy adjusting ISO and Shutter Speed. I'm pretty sure it resembles RAW but with less features. Dude, I really needed this video. I have the adapter you showed, but struggled on how to install my phone on it. I have a simpler adapter coming soon, so I'll see which one works best. I have a Samsung A50 phone (Android). What photography apps would you recommend?
I'm glad the video helped you out! I have used apps such as Raw+ for my iPhone. Try to find one that will allow you to fine tune things such as exposure and iso. Your android phone may already do that with the default camera!

Right now I primarily use my iPhone X to image the Moon and my DSLR for the planets. I am hoping to test out some 4k footage and processing on Jupiter and Saturn using my iPhone this month.

New phones with multiple cameras are more difficult to work with for astrohptography. See if the settings will allow you to choose which lens is shooting.
This is a great question that I should probably make a video on sometime this year! I recently bought for my two nieces who are just a bit older than your son the Tasco 60mm refractor. It's less than 50 dollars and is a great telescope to get started with views of the Moon and Planets. It also comes with an addtional microscope. Thanks.I am going to try out this adapter.The one I have been using has a telescoping fitting to attach to the eyepiece and it is always falling off. Bad design (and it was recommended in an article in Astronomy magazine!) The other nice thing about this one is it looks like you can attach the holder to the eyepiece, put the eyepiece in and focus and then put the phone in.
I hope it works out well for you! I still use it for imaging the Moon and doing live streams.

BTW, I am using my iPhone X with a Gosky adapter. My telescope is a Orion Star Blaster 6/6i my past scopes were always smaller and could only really view the moon.

I just saw your video and I am interested in astrophotography with my iPhone. Long ago would take long exposure shots within 0M-1 camera, often exposing over 30 minutes to an hour, but this was tedious in constantly adjusting a tracking starin a lens reticule. That was before the iPhone. I have a Celestron 8 telescope I will use. Thank you for your helpful tips.

@@LateNightAstronomy Unfortunately this adapter doesn't work with my Samsung S21. The lens piece sits perfectly where the power button is so every time I tighten it up it shuts the phone off. The other issue I experienced is the weight of this product. It's a bit heavy for my Meade Starfinder Dobsonian and I'm finding I have to adjust the mount for it all the time. Too many domino effects just to make it work. Otherwise cool if you got a regular scope and older phone that doesn't have the power button on the sides.

Tried using my IPhone last night on my sky-watcher 8in Dobsonian, got some decent pictures but still learning. Thanks for the tutorial, I’ll use it as soon as the sky clears.

Thank for easy to do videos....I use a Samsung s53 and celestron astro master 130. It's hard to take a good picture, like fog in the middle and very small round picture in the middle. I just keep on trying to make it better

i have been using mobile for astrophotography for past 3 years... i use meade ng-60sm telescope and moto g5s plus... i don't have adapter so i cutout a mobile cover of the size of eyepiece and use it... trust me works great...

I have an Orion TX8, the phone adapter that cam with it is a cheap one, but it works. I use an IPhone 14 and the few pictures I’ve taken are really amazing. Can’t wait to get better at it.
We have a near identical set up. I was out a few weeks ago imaging the Moon with my iPhone as well!

I used it this week for a live stream of the Moon and it keeps working great!
Use the count-down timer to trip the electronic shutter. Tapping the phone to release the shutter will result in blur every single time...without exception...due to the entire camera/telescope/tripod/mount system vibrating with the finger's force. So, once all adjustments have been made and you're ready to commence taking images, open up the app and find the time-delay function, set it for at least five full seconds, not less (trust me, scopes take at least four seconds to dampen oscillations and vibration that WILL be deleterious to your final images), and then tap the shutter. Be critical of your first two or three images. If they still appear blurry, try adding another five full seconds of count-down (10 seconds). You'll be surprised how much that helps.
A great tip!
I use voice commands so there is no shaking. It also has an astro camera application for Android that automatically takes a series of photos with more adjustment options (including calibration flat and dark frames). In the pro mode of the regular smartphone camera, more parameters can be adjusted even better. It is good to use a filter to remove the near-infrared spectrum, since most smartphone cameras register near-IR, which blurs the images.

I just bought one on ebay and can't wait to use it! I am new with telescopes and I have a beginners F300 70m telescope that came with 6mm, F12mm and 20mm eyepieces, 3x barlow
Congrats and let me know how that goes for you. Shy away from using the 3x barlow, that can give too much magnification a lot of the time!

That is a great point. I have a new phone coming in and am going to have to experiment with that. I believe some companies allow you to choose which lens in the settings but I don't know if Apple does that for the iPhone.

Hi Michael - awesome video! I was wondering if you had any tips on using this method for the Orion Nebula? Also, I tried imaging Mars (2.5x barlow, 16mm eyepiece, your adapter recommendation, and iPhone 8) but it looked like a bright blurry mess. I'd love to follow your other tutorial on processing a short video, but I imagine it needs to show up clearly on the phone before it's even worth processing? Keep up the awesome content man!

Thanks for your videos! One tip on this for others, invest in a $10 remote shutter for your phone to avoid bumping the scope. BTW, your planetary imaging tutorial was really helpful, as post-processing gets a little overwhelming. And your tip on how to zoom digitally to get better focus is a life saver when using an DSLR for imaging. Thank you! As for the smart phone adapter, to align to my lens the unit clamps right on my power and volume buttons -- frustrating! I've got a Samsung and have been researching on how to disable the buttons but no success. Anyone come across a way to overcome that?
I appreciate your comment and am glad you find the videos helpful. A remote shutter is a great tool (I use one for my DSLR). Most phones also will have a time delay feature for taking the pic. Set that to 2 or 3 seconds and you should be fine as well when taking a phone pic!
And as we did with Old cameras Upp the mirror and use remote shutter or timed shutter bak in the 80 - 2000 We were Using Tri X 400 ASA 🌠

Will have to try to connect my NexYZ to the lens first. Not sure why I did not think about that, always so frustrating trying to get the alignment working correctly.
It took me a long time before I thought to do it inside with some light myself!

Glad you enjoyed the video. Right now I use the built in camera app for my phone. I would encourage you to look for an app that has a free version to try out and includes fine tune features like shutter speed and iso. The more manual you can adjust and test things out the better!
Got my Celestron Nexyz yesterday, and my plans was to use it with my new TS Optics 20*80 ED triplet binoculars to take some pics on moon, guess what weather came....😱🤯🤬

Thanks so much! I would use the regular camera because that tends to be the one that is best for low light conditions. Give both a try if you can, although I know that may require shifting things around a bit.

Hey nice video! At the end you're talking about using a third party app for better exposure and iso settings. What apps would you recommend? I'm using a Google Pixel 6a. I have right now a Sirius Plossl 25mm on a 1200 aperture Orion Skyquest xt6 and planning on buying a 12.5mm. Would it be fine with the adapter in terms of quality? I've been told that a 12mm would be the maximum I can go with the aperture I have before losing on quality for planets and distant objects.
Yeah, a 12mm would be a nice buy for that scope but I bet on some clear steady nights you could push it up to around 150x on most nights with an 7, 8 or 9mm eyepiece. I rarely go over 200x even with a larger 8 inch dobsonian. Orion looks to have their Edge on planetary eypieces on sale right now too! As for the app, I have used RAW for the iphone and assumer they have a similar version for Android. Honestly though, android may let you control a lot of the manual things like iso and shutter without an addtional app.

As for the app, I found that ProCam X Lite on android to be a good app for taking photos and videos buy adjusting ISO and Shutter Speed. I'm pretty sure it resembles RAW but with less features. But anyway thanks again, I might try to buy a stronger eyepiece and see what might happen!

Dude, I really needed this video. I have the adapter you showed, but struggled on how to install my phone on it. I have a simpler adapter coming soon, so I'll see which one works best. I have a Samsung A50 phone (Android). What photography apps would you recommend?
I'm glad the video helped you out! I have used apps such as Raw+ for my iPhone. Try to find one that will allow you to fine tune things such as exposure and iso. Your android phone may already do that with the default camera!

Not that I am aware of. Most of the apps I'm aware of require a telescope for views like that.
Learning lots appreciate your lessons, want to use phone on a C9LXT9.25SOC/CGEMii on special order, OnePlus 9 can do RAW vids/and shutter speed/ISO settings. Steep learning with vid processing programs w/autostakker13, have to wait on CMOScamera, budget. Lotsa boning up todo. subscribed.

Hello, may I ask what phone are you using, I heard that some iphones struggle with the clamp and the volume buttons, do you think thats true? I have the iphone 11 and im a little bit scared of that
I am using the iPhone X. I have had that issue before, but a slight adjustment typically solves the problem.
when I started this hobby with my dad we actually had the same Mount for the phone.

Right now I primarily use my iPhone X to image the Moon and my DSLR for the planets. I am hoping to test out some 4k footage and processing on Jupiter and Saturn using my iPhone this month.

New phones with multiple cameras are more difficult to work with for astrohptography. See if the settings will allow you to choose which lens is shooting.

This is a great question that I should probably make a video on sometime this year! I recently bought for my two nieces who are just a bit older than your son the Tasco 60mm refractor. It's less than 50 dollars and is a great telescope to get started with views of the Moon and Planets. It also comes with an addtional microscope. Try starting out with medium and then use telephoto if it's on your phone.
My s21 5g had 30x zoom that is enough for moon photos and with samsungs digital sharpening it works wonder but I'd like to go a little further

Since you said not to use Digital zoom my camera has like a 20 optical that would be a really good photo plus my telescope is a 100 X so that would be a 120 X
