Excellent expose on the Church Fathers! We should always remember that not only was the New Testament not written until after Christ's death and resurrection, but the Canon of the Bible not closed for 400 years. Even if the Sacred Scriptures had been available, no one could possibly have afforded to buy such a book. It would have been too expensive as it was written by hand for the first 1500 years of Church History. Very few people could read anyway! The faith was handed on by word of mouth and Tradition! Hence, the Church Fathers importance!
Isn't funny how our CCD classes back in the 70s never mentioned these Church Fathers. I will speak for myself when I say that my walk with the Church would've been made better and richer had I known of them.
The church fathers left tons of written material. If we really had to read them to understand Christianity, only a few privileged people with tons of free time could do it. Our knowledge & understanding of Christian doctrine only require Scripture. Blessings.
How did the Christians know how to live before the new testament was compiled and made into a book? Simple: The followers of Jesus had the Gospel as preached to them contained in the letters of Paul, Peter, John and James as well as the Old Testament portion of the Bible. In fact, when Jesus was tempted by Satan after fasting for 40 days, he used nothing except Scripture as his weapon to fight Satan. When Paul preached to the Berean Jews, how did they find out if Paul's teachings were from God? They consulted Scriptures. The idea that God's people did not have the proper spiritual guidance before the new testament scriptures were compiled into a book is just a false teaching by RCC.
Rely on the word of God for Truth. The tradition Paul speaks about is the gospel he is teaching and most certainly NOT the tradition(s) of the catholic Church. Do not be mislead- these men KNOW everything there is to know about Catholicism, church fathers, tradition , saints , penance and most notably, money. …but, they do not know Jesus or submit to scripture.
