Inspired by the introductory scenes of this movie and the love story of the legendary
folk singer, I was very keen to visit Guilin. I was lucky to make it possible, visited Guilin and had the opportunity to see the musical Opera on Lijiang river. It was an amazing experience to witness this wonderful live-show. I enjoyed it thoroughly.I must admit that I never in my life before had enjoyed such live-performance. It was marvellous, indeed.

This is folk song mainly from Guangxi province that pass down from generation to generation. They usually dont write the songs down in words, they just sing sing sing and sing everyday at home, in the field, doing chores, and hanging out etc....back in the old days, that is how they mate (as in finding their lovers). One standing on one cliff while the other in another cliff and sing. Their feeling is in the song. They making them up as their feeling goes..very talented.

"Little Junior Sister is going to have an important operation tomorrow. Cao Yong added more fish and protein to her rice bowl, and then taught her how to relax: "If you feel too nervous, you can hum your favorite song in your heart. What song do you like?"
She didn't listen to much music, but only remembered the ballad that her mother used to hum when she was a child: "Liu Sanjie."
The two senior brothers laughed when they heard her answer: Sanjie Liu's folk songs are very good, and the little junior sister really doesn't mind whether to follow the trend or not, as long as the song is good.
Simple and simple junior sister, no wonder Senior Brother Cao is full of joy when he sees the junior junior sister."

i love this movie..simply because i admire her strength and sense of righteousness. A rare movie depicting a strong female lead...especially in the male dominated society at that time ( 1961)

I love the story of Liu San Jie. There are many s tributes to her in Liuzhou and Guilin China. Today Guilin is a tourist city. What's great is this move was shot in the Guilin, so you can see what it was like 50 years ago.

This comes from a folk legend of south China, dating back thousands of years. When Liu San Jie sang, everyone was spirited by her voice. Then one day, the son of an oppresive landloard proposed marriage, and she was forced to flee ilto the mountains............

yes,the movie Liu San Jie came 1st. It was banned in certain countries because it was singing against the landlords. Kind of poor against the rich. it was a good movie and HongKong copied some of its rymes to its movie "San Ker Lian" & later "san ker yin yuan"

I believe it's portraying Zhuang culture because Third Sister Liu was said to be of Zhuang ethnicity and the landlord is probably Han.

The actress isn't actually singing... the songs were dubbed in after the show was shot. I forgot who the actual singer was though.

The actress here is the actual singer. Her name is Huang Wanqiu, has been learning and performing GuangXi local songs and drama since 13 years old. She's retired now from the position of Chairman of GuangXi Cultural and Education Bureau.

Everything was dubbed in those days including the dialogue, they don't have digital song, not even stereo in 1961 in this movie. Once I watched a movie been made, the actors were lipsyned, they all moved their lips and the studio work will do the rest.

Are You Chinese? or do you speak Chinese? if you do not understand Chinese, how do you know " what THE HELL" she is Singing? 刘三姐 is one of the popular movie in 60s to 70s, most of the oversea Chinese knew and love it. I have watched this movie more than twenty time.
