I have different traditions with my grandchildren. I have an 8 year old grandson, who I see multiple times each week because he lives close to me. He is on the autism spectrum and loves Legos. We started a tradition when he was 3 years old to build a holiday Lego every year (he’s insanely good at building Legos!). It’s been fun to get out the Legos every season (they are put away very carefully!) & watch his joy in seeing them again. He gets so excited to add to the collection! He also builds a Lego ornament for the tree. I also have grandchildren I only see 4x per year because they live in San Diego (I’m in Ptld, OR). They are 5 & 7 & we’ve started a tradition of them making an ornament for each other. A lot of thought & time goes into each ornament & it’s heartwarming to see how excited they are to give their ornament to each other. I also have given a customized ornament to each of my grandchildren each year & have since they were born. Each one represents what they are enjoying that particular year, & my hope is that they will have 18 ornaments when they move out on their own (or 19 or however many:), & will enjoy unwrapping them & having the memories associated with them each year. My fiancé and I started a tradition last year of cutting a slice of the trunk from the bottom of our real tree after Christmas and engraving the year and using it as an ornament for the next year. I’ve been big on trying to start traditions since having my son!
We also have an entire neighborhood that goes all out with Christmas decorations and the community actually votes on who wins. It’s a HUGE thing that happens every year and we love going
My family has several traditions around Christmas. We always put our 1st tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving. My husband builds a fire (if it’s cold enough), we put on Christmas pjs, make hot chocolate and cookies & decorate the tree with all the ornaments from their childhood and travel. Closer to Christmas, we pick an evening to drive around town to look at lights. Our small town has a beautiful light display in the historic district. Christmas Eve we open one gift(new Christmas pjs) and watch It’s A Wonderful Life. Christmas morning is cinnamon rolls while opening gifts and A Christmas Story playing on the tv. My girls are 20 & 24, now!
Growing up and then with my own children we always opened our stockings before breakfast and after breakfast we opened one gift at a time starting with the youngest to the oldest. Sometimes opening gifts lasted into the middle of the afternoon.
Hot cider allllll the way!! Crown Mulling Spices mixed with apple juice is THE BEST way to make cider-I am convinced.
I have three 3-4 ft. Trees....one is all shiny bright antique,one vintage colored solids on flocked tree and one handmade, child made family memories....the whole house glows at night

We open Christmas jammies on 12/24 and read Christmas books. Me being the youngest, I got to ring a bell as we read the polar express. Although we’re all grown, we still enjoy the tradition together when we can.
You should have a tree that is dedicated to the homemade ornaments...like the one in your informal living/family room. That way you can have your tailored tree in the formal living room and still can display the homemade ornaments (esp. once you have children) in another location. It's the best of both worlds.

We didn’t have many holiday traditions, but the one we did have I think was pretty cool … My Dad was born and spent his younger years growing up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Every Christmas they would go out and find a tree, but instead of cutting it down, they would dig it up, put it in a large pot and decorate it for the season. Later they would replant it in the yard or back in the woods. We carried on that tradition growing up.

When I was little my mom would say we could open one gift on Christmas Eve. We’d go around the room and open our one gift. When we were done, my grandma (my dad’s mom who lived with us) would always say “That was fun! Shall we do another?” My brother and I would cheer and my mom would gnash her teeth because she could say no after grandma suggested it. After each round, grandma would say it again… and again until there wasn’t anything left. LOL. Santa gifts would of course show up the next morning.

Ohh I just had an idea for the embroidered jumpers, instead of getting a new one each year, you should add a patch of embroidery each year so over the years the jumpers become fuller and fuller
I always give my family pajamas to my daughters family and grandchildren, we open on Christmas eve then make cookies and hot chocolate pile in the car and go see all the Christmas lights. Love your youtube and pods.
In my personal opinion, if you were to ever have a kid or kids, the best Christmas Eve movie to watch is the polar express! The story of the Polar express is like a kids dream. It is the most magical, true Christmas movie I feel like it’s the best movie to get a kid excited for Christmas.

A Christmas Story is classic. Funny. We add in Home Alone, again for the laughs. The original with Boris Karloff, How the Grinch Stole Christmas -- watch til the end!! Always Polar Express. The love and spirit of Christmas.
When step kids were young and my nieces and nephews every Christmas Eve late I would take men’s hiking boots and sprinkle flour by the fireplace and make footprints
oh wow you are bringing up such memories here in my hometown we did used to have one of those candy cane Lane neighborhoods that everybody decorated their homes and they were labor and they were beautiful so you went every year to see them but of course those people have gotten older cause heck I’m almost 60 so that would’ve been in my very younger years so they have passed on and their kids did not keep that tradition so we don’t have there was like five places that you went in town to see the Christmas decorations and we don’t have that anymore but we still have the river drive and walk where they decorate the whole. It’s probably like I don’t know at least a mile maybe maybe longer it may be longerworth of lights and every year they add to it and then you go over to the old Concho and they’ve got the big beautiful ray of a couple of different set ups so those are things that I do every year and they will start this weekend, December 3
My favourite holiday tradition with my husband’s family is that every year we play a gift game. Everybody brings a wrapped and anonymous present. These presents can be something good but often it’s something weird or funny everybody’s name goes in hat and the first name chosen chooses a gift to wrap. They then choose a name for the next person who can either choose a new gift from the pile or steal the original present continues until everybody has had a chance to get a gift or steal a gift at this point there’s a number of gifts that resurface every year and everybody jokes about not getting it. There are strategies between families how to get and keep the good gifts during the stealing process because each gift can only be stolen. So many great laughs! We’ve paired back giftgiving in the family as everybody got older so it’s nice to have something to look forward to that is both fun and you could end up with something nice (if you are lucky) 🤣🤣🤣
Great podcast! I am not Christian (Buddhist), and i come from a very disfunctional family (we no longer live near each other), so the 25th is a me day! I stay home by myself and eat my favorite foods for dinner, watch a few hallmark movies and/or listen to a British mystery audiobook, eat homemade pumpkin custard with cool whip on top, and have hot apple cider (local brands here in Michigan are the best). If I known someone is alone (and has trouble being alone) I will invite them over to join me. So I am definitely team hot Apple Cider 🍎
I love going to Christmas markets where people sells their own home made creations, made of wood, fabrics, jewelry...and then every year I also create new decorations made of pallets, garden polls, book pages, toilet paper rolls...and usually some friends are joining too 😍😍🤩🤩 sSnce I teach French to new foreign inhabitants, we usually create, visit, talk about different subjects. And last week we created few tree decorations, explanations were in French...they learn by playing, creating, visiting...I love it

I love your Christmas decorations in your home. In my family I buy a special Christmas ornament for each one of my children and grandchildren every year. I have done this since they were little. That way they have their own collection started. Oh and I prefer apple cider over hot cocoa as well. 😉

Team apple cider! I enjoy hot chocolate occasionally but usually it just upsets my stomach. Some traditions my fiance and I have is making chicken fettuccine on Christmas Eve (inspo The Holiday) and watching White Christmas. Then on Christmas morning we make homemade cinnamon rolls.
Growing up on Christmas Eve we would drive around the block and look at Christmas lights and before bed my mom would read us A Visit from St. Nicholas (Twas the Night Before Christmas).
I know you don’t get snow where you are… but maybe you could choose a temperature degree. I live in Northern Utah and every year when we have the first snow of the season.. my kids know to rush home from school and we will make our family (my parents, my sister and her family, my Aunt). What we call “snow cookies.” Then we take them around to them and give them these special Almond butter “snow cookies”. My family will now text me if they see snow in the forecast… “it’s almost snow cookie time!” We love it!

We use to draw a name then that was who you filled a stocking for. Just little gifts, but sometimes some little gag gift. My mom was 70 at the time and I put a pregnancy test kit in it. She didn’t know what it was at first, we were dying laughing. When she realized what it was, said; you see, why I can’t take her anywhere! Omg was so funny
OK I’m gonna respond as I listen to your podcast. In regards to the little village houses and you want to DIY them, you need to find you a good ceramic shop where you can just go buy the bisque the unfired pieces. I used to have one, when I was in my 20s and one time when we moved as we were unloading the truck. A box fell out the back of the semi and it happened to be all my houses for my village that my mother and I had painted. Along with the reindeer. But my mom had the ceramic shop and all of the different houses and churches, and all the little intricate pieces to make your Village or your homes come to life as a little city village. Again you’re looking for a ceramic shop and they are becoming more popular again because you kids think that it’s so cool that it’s coming back around. You can pick your own pieces.

My ex in-laws always had Christmas on Christmas Eve and then on Christmas day. Whatever was underneath the tree was from Santa.
One of my mom and dad‘s every year tradition was to make candy (peanut brittle, chocolate, covered cherries, pecan, brittle, pecan turtles, divinity, not everybody can make that, peanut patties they’re the pink ones, cookies, of course, chocolate, covered pretzels, trash oh my gosh, trash was always made so we could eat on it from the time we started to the time we finished, almond Roca I have to buy it.) of course my mother and father are both gone and none of us three kids learned their secret in making candy, but I make a cheese ball that my mother always made and my kids asked for it. I adopted a couple of traditions from my best friend. Those were the thingsthat I remember. As far as my own traditions for my own family, it’s just me and my daughter and we try to go somewhere for Christmas that we’ve not been before that is decorated and is very festive. That’s our holiday season nowadays.

Consider a small 3d modeling and printing company to create these for you. 3d printed items are fun and easy to paint. I own a small 3d printing shop and art studio and would love to do something like this for you! 😊

Overall it’s about 10-15 minutes of ads. Each ad break was 2-4 mins or so. They’re definitely my least favorite part of the podcasts and can get annoying. It’s not like MaCenna is hurting for money, and it would be nice if she broke out of the mold, focused more on her audience’s preferences, and made her podcasts without ads for us to enjoy more.
While I agree she should be compensated, I was more so wondering if there have to be so many of them, feels like more ads than content atm. I also listen while doing other activities so I can’t just skip the ads every time 😌

We are Canadian so every year we listen to stories written by Stuart Maclean. They were originally on CBC radio I would say in the 90’s and you can still find them online. They are hilarious and charming. If you are going to listen to one, I would recommend “Dave Cooks The Turkey”. This has been a fun podcast. It makes me think of all the different traditions that we have in our family.

I make an advent calendar with liqueur chocolates for me and my mother and we have a boozy chocolate and watch out favorite TH-camr's vlogmas videos. I have 2 trees, my aesthetic tree and my tacky tree, I add a couple of new ornaments to each every year. I live in New Zealand and we HAVE to have Pavlova for desert on Christmas day - in NZ it's not Christmas day without Pav. I make Nana's shortbread for all my cousin's - she's been gone 20 years now and it's nice for everyone to eat cookies that taste just like she baked.
Years ago when my husband and I were in our first house we started a tradition of picking out one expensive thing for the house at Christmas instead of buying each other gifts. It made Christmas so much easier and we always loved our gift!

I did the same thing growing up with ceramic houses! We're the same age. I googled - I think ArtMinds and California Creations are the brands that my Mom would buy... there seem to be a lot of unpainted ones on secondhand sites like Mercari and ebay

Anyway....Our family tradition is serious baking the night before....ham, cakes, bread, etc.
On Christmas Day, we cook all the other dishes (macaroni pie, corn pie, lasagne, Christmas rice, pigein peas, baked chicken, turkey, lamb, beef, fish)....we over-do it on the food for sure. Then exchange gifts at mom's house...🎉🎉❤
Traditions: Christmas Cookies baking & decorating (have a few favorites I always make plus we try a new 1 every year). Make a Gingerbread House (want to do the contest - great idea). Going out to cut a tree on our property. Nutcracker collection on our mantel. Lots of decorating - inside & out. Lots of lights inside & out. Going to look at lights. Go to Nutcracker Ballet. Go to a Hockey Game. Christmas Eve with my huge family - Pot Luck Meal, Dirty Santa gift exchange, lots of games, family pictures in the same ugly sweaters we were every year, candlelight church service & Christmas caroling. We make Italian food for Christmas dinner.
If you like hot apple cider you've got to try Wassail. My favorite!

For the village houses check out Model railway shops in LA. You’ve probably thought this. My dad was big into model trains and painted little houses and building for his model railway. There should be different gauge sizes. Hope you find something ❤️🇬🇧
GREAT FAMILY GAME SUGGESTION:
If you have enough of Romeos family members, I HIGHLY suggest getting the game Pictionary, the actual boxed game not online or other versions if they exist. We always split into 2 or 3 teams to compete and if there are young kids we split them into different teams. We always made sure the child knew the team was honored to have them (some kids are shy) we never wanted the kids to feel a team was “stuck” with them. Believe me, if you can’t draw well, that is what makes the game hysterical. One must be able to laugh at themselves and laughed at by more others.
We also split up the actual artists in our family so they couldn’t be on the same team. We found getting a cheap stand up easel for each team made it so much fun because everyone can see the so called artists at work vs everyone trying to stand over the person drawing. 😄 You are guaranteed lots and lots of laughs. I even saved two of the most hilarious pictures my dad did over the years and sent him a photo every year just to remind him. 😂
Be sure to have enough pencils w/ erasers (people erase to fix/change their art as they draw so pens are out. lots of paper or chalkboard to erase between turns.

You have a perfect start with tradition when you celebrate with your families. My family was always on Christmas eve, our time with the kids was christmas morning, and my husbands family was Christmas day and night...we always stayed over night with the cousins. We were just discussing the recipes that were my grandmothers, then my moms, and now I make them. So good to learn your mom's recipes. We always had a favorite coffee cake, with eggs, bacon, and orange juice after stockings.
There is a candy Cane lane in El Segundo ( should be closer to you). Small streets that dead end, so people just park and walk, which is more fun.
We get a real tree from a small buisinsss, so fresh! The heavier the tree the fresher. We would go to a local nursery, Roger's garden in Newport ( they had a garden train and ornaments, plants, decor)and then to Fashion Island to shop, and eat lunch. With kids, strollers, shopping, eating, 3 generations it was fun. Boat parades are fun too.
We.always celebrated advent with the old fashion advent calenders with picures of toys, and the boys loved guessing what was behind each window. We also celebrated advent with advent wreathes,nativity sets, prayers, and time going to services.
Love fun Christmas movies. It is a great suprise to wait to put out presents for children after they go to bed. My mom would have some presents for relatives under the tree, but all ours appeared Christmas morning and it was so magical. We always did this with our boys.
You probably need to find aceramic shop where you can find holiday greenware or fired bisque pieces. I used to do painting with all the details and would paint on bisque. We have a tradition of finding the pickle ornament on the tree. I also have a little tiny elf ( like 1 1/2 inches tall) that I hide somewhere in my living room or dining room. My Grandchildren love hunting for the pickle and Pixie, the elf and I have little prizes for everyone.....lifesaver books and other candy treats.
I saw a video of a street in Toronto where every single home had an inflatable Santa standing in the front yard....it was a really long street too! It is always so much fun at Christmas!!
When I was very young, I was scared to death if the grinch. Long story short, my dad helped me get over that fear with a late night show down that ended with delivering said grinch to my grandmothers house to end the haunting once and for all. 😂This led to a tradition of my father gifting me the annual Lenox grinch ornament-I grew quite the collection over about two decades. He has since passed, but the ornaments remain one of my prized possessions and remind me of him-especially at Christmas.
My best friend why they listen to music. They have it like a weekend prior and then the week of Christmas the weekend prior is to come over to her house and they make and roll the dough out and cut their gingerbread houses and get them ready then Christmas Eve night are actually I think it’s December 23 when they get together and have a big family supper. They also have their gingerbread house decorating contestand everybody has to decorate one😊
I totally understand when you’re talking about your mother owning her boutique and y’all decorating 40 trees. No, I don’t decorate 40 trees, but I would be all out and elaborate at the office and get so depressed because people would complain about things that were either up or warm up, but yet never wanted to contribute to so by the time it was my time to go home and put up my tree I don’t want to do it and it makes me so sad and mad at the same time! So I understand when you say y’all didn’t have a Christmas tree😢😢
A tradition I acquired from the first boyfriends family. A bowl of hard boiled eggs, every one has to take a turn to select an egg and crack it on their forehead. Two of eggs will be raw. It's a great fun game. 😂

I buy my kids Christmas pajama every year along with the dog and have them take pictures in front of the tree every year.
I wonder if other hobby shops that sell models for train sets or dnd minis would sell more intricate buildings like the ones you’re thinking of.

I also live in California. From as long as I can remember we had tamales , beans and rice for Chiristmas Eve dinner. Then we would listen on the radio to The Cinnamon Bear. It was so much fun. Of course this was in the late 50's. After that
t we all opened one
present.
Whichever family member had the youngest children would host breakfast so we all could watch them open their presents. Cinnamon toast and cocoa for present opening. Later pancakes, sausage and eggs. BTW The Cinnamon Bear can still be found on You Tube.❤
P.s. this breakfast was at 5 am!

Each year, we (as in all the Titas, Tito, cousins etc) get together for our noche buena, Christmas Eve, and each family contributes ideas, and then we vote via a poll on Viber. The one with the most votes wins!!! This year, we'll be dressing up in the decade we were born. So excited!!! 🎉
In Melbourne Australia on Christmas Eve we have Carols by Candlelight. It takes place in a park and is a fundraiser for the blind. It started in 1937 and raises hundreds of $ each year. It is a tradition for many families to go or watch on TV.
I'm a savory over sweets girl myself and Im team apple cider all the way! Our tradition is to read the Christmas story for the month of December. The book of Luke in the Bible has enough chapters to read one a day and finish by Christmas. And yes, the. decorating, cinnamon rolls Christmas morning, etc! All the things : )
