I saw this when it first came out and i always loved it happily its on youtube so i watched it again the other night and its still brilliant all the guys from slade are naturals bit of a dark story but worth taking time to watch it
I remember going to see the Film Flame when it first came out (had a date with lass from school..we were only 15..lol ) Actually as Pop movies go its actually rather good, they showed it on TV a short while a go and I still liked it, some great music in it as well.
I was 15 and went every day after school......I was a huge fan, but it was a different Slade, maybe hey changed too quickly for most of their audience I'm not sure, but afer the MASSIVE year hey had in '73 it was a slow decline from then on.....
Yes definitely. A soppy Beatles film it wasn't but taking the time out to make it then taking two years trying to break America and failing miserably was the start of the decline. I personally didn't like what they became. American cop and superbowl player images and singing about "powdering their noses". These boys are from the black country not the black hills of Dakota. The songs might have been relatively good and of course bands have to develop and move on but leaving your massive fanbase in Britain and Europe to chase the yankee dollar in the pre internet age was almost fatal. In music in those days you just couldn't disappear for two years and expect to pick up where you left off and the band admitted that. You needed to get on TOTP on a Thursday to push your latest single. You can't do that from California. "Whatever Happened To Slade" wasn't just an album title it was a genuine comment said by many and was even graffiti on brick walls! Thank god Ozzy pulled out of Reading 1980 or we might not be talking about Slade now.
