So you're the one who bought that. Been on my wishlist for a long time. Lukas is a fantastic craftsman. Glad to see he'll get some exposure from this. Placing this video on my watchlist
I didn't even get a notification, I just got lucky. This looks like a fancier version of a shortsword you'd find in an RPG's tutorial area. And I always love those swords, so if I could find something like this for sale, that'd actually be perfect for me.
The problem is A: Skall doesn't actually mention a price, and B: Considering what he paid for it, it'd be way out of my price range anyway. It's cool, but I don't exactly have an appreciable budget to work with.
I like the music you use for these demos. For some reason I got a Winsor & Newton ad before this video played. I didn't even know they advertised outside of artists' magazines.
I've wanted a "holbein" style dagger or baselard for years. I really think the aesthetics of the WWII more base presentation models were near perfect, minus what the insignia etc represented. The one you've reviewed doesn't have the sharp contours in the handle, but it is beautiful. I would love one of those.
Question: This probably isn't in hema, but if you parry as your oppenent is running at you and after the parry he/she is too close to throw a cut and it will take too long to reset for a thrust, would it to be practical to switch from dominant grip to reverse while to swords are out of contact and pommel strike your oppenent's throat.
Hey Skall, could you do a video on how would you choose axes, swords, spears, etc for a battle? I want to know the advantages each of these weapons would have on a battlefield and why. Ive read a lot about it, but I would be really interested on what you would have to say.
Somehow the lower handle part bites me in my ankles... With gloves i had no problems but with bare hands... Have some of your problems like me with this daggerform?
That is beautiful! I have a Boker version of it that dagger (Model # 121550), but mine is 8 9/16 inches long. I love it! The handle is made of Cherry wood, which darkens over time, use and exposure to UV sunlight. Have you tested that model?
Your Bardiche videos you mentioned how there aren't alot of reproductions. Darksword Armoury makes 2 variants of Bardiche i believe. You weren't interested? Or were you looking to get a cheaply made Deepeka one to show the difference between one made better?
Can you do a video about fighting in armour vs fighting in no armour and what it has to do with speed, vision, focus, hit accuracy, etc? Personally, I find no armour to be more freeing. It adds the sense of "Oh shit. I miss this hit, I could die or get seriously injured." The adrenaline helps to focus, and the period I portray in my group has some bulky armour, gambeson, hauberk, coat of plates, etc.

edi I do agree with you weapons change your fighting techniques a lot , but still the hand to wrestling the technique I believed would still be a very effective move (as it is mma today ),but it's almost absent in the old treaties
I think the RNC is a bit overrated. AFAIK it takes at least 5s for a blood-choke to pass out. That's quite a long time, if that guy is holding a dagger (or shoots his pistol alarming his friends). Moreover, unlike stealth-videogames he'll get up quite fast afterwards, unless you hold the choke for a significant amount of time. Sure, you could use the few seconds to finish him off. Here some considerations of unarmed attacks at unsuspecting targets from behind (not all are equally realistic, but each of them would be very difficult to avoid, if being attacked like it): a) flying knee into the back, followed with ellbow-drop on the flat of the head (bad in case of helmets and a bit risky) b) punch into the column, inverted firemans carry throw (target falls onto his head) c) kneestrike to the back, followed by head-turn throw (you either are compliant or risk the structural integrity of your neck) followed by a headstomp d) double earslap, fingers into the eyes and throw, else like c) e) kick the back of the knee, kneestrike to the back of the head, head pulled down with all your weight (one of the few neck-snaps you can find in medieval manuals) f) scissoring attack to the neck to stun, followed by a takedown, choke, or neck-snap g) jump into the opponent thus making him fall on his belly and immediately mount such that you can pull his head back (rather easy, if you're heavier) I could go on with possible takedowns, but I think it's enough to make a point. The take-home-message is, that you are in a really bad situation, when you are stunned, or loose your balance/end up on the ground with the enemy over you. The advantage of many of these techniques would be, that if they fail, you can simply continue to attack or back of, whereas in case of the RNC, you can get into a struggle with your target, which is particularly bad, if his friends run to you. BTW: neck-snaps are rare IRL, because they require a lot of strength, unless the opponent is stunned or KO. AFAIK, in military manuals you'll see a lot that the RNC is set up with a stunner or that you make sure that the opponent loses his stance. Once he's unconscious you can try to snap his neck by pushing behind his ear. Lastly, I do believe that medieval combatants were aware of eye-gouging, ear-slapping throat and vagus-nerve attacks, but all strikes are of limited use against people in armour. Thus wrestling was the main unarmed martial arts for nobles (whereas peasants did kickboxing, but that's less documented).
The germans in ww2 had ceremonial daggers with that handle, the handle would have an eagle with swastica on it and sometimes "alles für deutschland" on the blade, i really think they got inspired by that dagger you have
Why? its not like swords are obsolete or anything. Its not the swords fault their are people stupid enough to think shouting for all the 1821 yard marksmen to hear you before trying to charge them, flailing your arms around to make sure they are paying attention, and then trying to run that 1821 yards across the gauntlet of sniping bullets until you are finally close enough to decapitate someone, with a sword as a primary weapon, is the proper way to try to use a sword in the 21st century. Heck even in the age of the archer the only time swords where a primary weapon was from behind a shield, because archers owned the battlefield. Quite interestingly, “Degen” is a rather general word in dutch, for very thin long cutting weapons, like a floret. There seems to be a tighter relation between Swiss German and Flemish, than German and Flemish somehow :)
I don't think that it comes from the sport fencing weapon (we have the same name in German for the French term Epee), but from its old term for "dagger". Talhofer uses the term "tegen" in his fencing treatise about fighting with daggers.
For just steel and wood it’s so beautiful, in a simplistic sort of way

Because it's quite a thin blade, so removing a lot of material might leave the edge very prone to damage.
Fair enough. Thanks, Skal.
That is a beautiful piece. Wish you could hold onto it but I understand not wanting to be stuck with that price tag.
Now that is a gorgeous little sword!
Wow that is beautiful! Absolutely a work of art!
This is actually one of the prettiest swords I've seen.

A fine looking dagger! I wonder how it compares to the WW2 SS and SA daggers?
Absolutely beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing :)
Say, how about a build video on your ballistic gel torso?

Brenodor Haha. De isch nice gsi. ^^
8:32 Haha. Yes, very discreet as you struggle to drive the blade through the gel.
So glad you went ahead and chopped off the little hanging bit from that mat in the end. It was really bothering me.
this would be great for duel wielding with a rapier, saber or backsword or just 2 of these.
I would need longer quillons if used as a fencing dagger. But using that thing and a cloak around the left arm would work just fine imo.

a) flying knee into the back, followed with ellbow-drop on the flat of the head (bad in case of helmets and a bit risky)
b) punch into the column, inverted firemans carry throw (target falls onto his head)
c) kneestrike to the back, followed by head-turn throw (you either are compliant or risk the structural integrity of your neck) followed by a headstomp
d) double earslap, fingers into the eyes and throw, else like c)
e) kick the back of the knee, kneestrike to the back of the head, head pulled down with all your weight (one of the few neck-snaps you can find in medieval manuals)
f) scissoring attack to the neck to stun, followed by a takedown, choke, or neck-snap
g) jump into the opponent thus making him fall on his belly and immediately mount such that you can pull his head back (rather easy, if you're heavier)
I could go on with possible takedowns, but I think it's enough to make a point.
