The sockets used in the pilot were a bit expensive so purchasing sourced a cheaper version for EBD when wedge bulbs went to prime time. By the time EBD was produced GE had come out with a 555 bulb which was to have the same electrical characteristics as the 44/444 but had some production shortcuts which made them less expensive. Those 555 bulbs were a reliability disaster that took several runs and many months to correct.
