- Lesson 1 of a series of Malagasy language videos created to equip partner churches to use simple Malagasy phrases during short term trips. "All things to all people."
it's very touching to see your teaching us not only english and malagasy but teaching us to to it with jesus
Hi, I'm Malagasy and I'm very amazed to see your video on youtube.
thank you, I didn't know that people will be interested about learning Malagasy Language. Wish you all the best!
Hi, thanks for your comment. just a little remarq. Better you tell roa-polo taona aho.
I don't know about malay language
I don't know about malay language
My Wife is from madagascar and i am a indian i love malagasy language
Hi, i am Malagasy. i speak dialect north of madagascar.
so wiked to see your video on youtube.
i didn't know that there are a lot of countries wanna learn our language.
misaotra anao ranga fa tena tsara mahita ny olo te andeha aty mada ka mianatra lay teny gasy❤
there are many of us could speak many languge too like spanish, chinese, japanese, italian, arabs don't forget to say french,,,etc.... ok enjoy learning guys. fa io tsy sarotra rah ato anaty fô ny mianatra anazy.
It's great that you are embracing a language of a place that you are visiting. I hope you can also embrace their traditional beliefs and not push your religion on anyone. The world doesn't need more homogeny. It needs to celebrate diversity. Belief systems have gone extinct, much like languages are, entirely because of missionaries. Very few local religions remain. Think of all the knowledge and perspectives that we have lost as a species.
Sooooo true!
Man I literally had a whole moment thinking about this lmao I respect him as a language teacher but I'm glad to see there was an intelligent person on top of this
wow this is just awesome, i can't believe a foreigner is teaching my beloved language, tiako eky aiiiiiii :) thanks man, you're cool
I'm going to Madagascar in exactly 1 month to work at an ECD (Early Child Development) Center close to Andasibe for 3 months! Thank you so much for this video! I'm fluent in english but not in french and especially not i Malagasy! So the fact that I know a few glossary in their language means so much to me!
So you travel to preach the gospel worldwide?!!!...WOW!that's amazing....I'm so glad you did it for the Southern malagasy people!.... (y)
zah gasy nef ts mahay teny tulear zanii!!

Misaotse azo thanku verry muche for u do fa mahay vatae rehe zao👍👍👍👍👍
You speak malagasy better than me !!!!!! I like the video because I'm practicing my English and my Malagasy, and yeah I speak french because I've lived in France since my birth. This video was good, i'm surprised
haha same here !
my sister says you are the best Malagasy teacher ever!!!
a nice way for many of us to learn English and southern Malagasy at the same time
I like this an it's very amazing.
The language you're teaching is harder than our official language
Very interesting video, man! I appreciate the introduction into this language.
I was wondering why I didn't understand until I realized he was teaching a dialect from the south.
I like this... you spink very good malagasy language
woaouh ... you just made my day :) ... really hilarious and informative !
Thanks for this Doug. I'm sure that 10 years ago, you didn't realize how helpful this would be, or how far reaching this would be. I'm leaving tomorrow for Antananarivo with 8 others from my church. I certainly appreciate this foundation!
Thanks for your comment! No, I didn’t realize how many would see this. I was creating it for a team who was visiting during my team in Madagascar as a Journeyman with the IMB.
I do want to provide you with a word of advice, though. The dialect that we spoke in the southern part of Madagascar was known as the Mahafy dialect. It is a very different dialect than what you will use in the capital. I’m not sure how much of it will translate , although there will be some similarities.
The official language is quite different from the dialect that we spoke.
I at least wanted to let you know so that you were not surprised. I hope your time there is fruitful, and that the Lord blesses the work of your hands!
@@thedougEfreshchannel Wow! Thank you for the warning! I'm sure general greeting of Salama will be the same, but I won't pour tons of time into study then. My wife is a francophone, so we hope to be able to converse some in French, but anywhere we travel, we try to learn as much of the language as we can in the time we are there!
@@throughlyfurnishedoutdoors many will speak French so that would work in your favor for sure!
@@thedougEfreshchannel As a follow up, you are right, there are differences, but even so, some of your explanations are still helpful. Thanks again my brother!
Incredible, even me as a native malagasy cannot speak the dialect of the South of Madagascar. Super :)
Really impressive. I was in Madagascar for about 2 years. My Malagasy is really miserable. I didn't find this video when I was there or even before getting there! Anyway nice attempt!
Similar with my language, ma'anyan language from borneo
That right the Malagasy ancestors were from Borneo :)
I like this a lot! I just finished up serving a two year LDS mission in Mada and I loved every minute of it. I think it would be important to make notice that this is all 'teny toliara' (dialect of Toliara) and not what they consider 'teny ofisialy.' Not that fiten-paritra is bad (I spent a good deal of time in Mahajanga and I LOVED learning the fiteny ao Mahajanga), but for anyone looking to learn Malagasy, just know that this isn't 'Official Malagasy,' although it is a great video!
Here are some examples of official malagasy phrase:
Salama e!: Hi!
Jack no anarako: My name is Jack.
Izaho dia avy any Etazonia: I'm come from US.
Izaho dia mipetraka ao Antananarivo: I live in Antananarivo.

Iza ny anaranao?: What is your name?

The linguistic study classify the Malagasy language to the Bornean language, the Greater Barito language :
Austronesian, Malayo-Polynesia, East Barito, Malagasy.
The Barito family language are the native Dayaks language of Southern Borneo.
lesson starts at 5:00
cool!!!!! thank for you willingness to teach online! i like it
@Doug I am tracing some language which may resemble thevanggukat with long e, as in see. What I need to know is a few Malagasy words spelled phonetically in English, not Mal;agasy. Specifically any words for lemur names or words having parts from thevanggukat. evangu, anggukat theevan see? For each word you know I need meaning as well as English phonetic spelling. Not a big project, a few such words would do if any, and similar may prevail more than exact, but if I've mentioned an exact word from thevanggukat, please let me know. Do Mozambique and Zambia have languages related to Malagasy (if you know)? I'm wanting to pin down places where people from very ancient Mu ended up long, long ago...
Haha, I like it I like it!! I always wanted to have this accent, mine is rather boring...
Manaona iDouglas. Tsara io video io. Tsy Gasy aho koa fa tena tiko ny teny Gasy. Mila mianatra be aho rehefa hiverina ho any Toliara.
Misaotra be.
Thanks for Duglas, but juste a few precision, this is an dialect but not the official language in madagascar, this is from the souht of madagascar
+Rahajarivo Jean Michel Madagascar High lands have been christians for a long time. So missionaries likely head to the southern folks. It makes sense to teach this regional language then.
Highly interrested thanks a lot (y) ;)
astienback, no, it doesn't make sense. After brainwashing the highlanders, they should be stopping as soon as they can instead of heading to a place where the people are still sane.
Misaotra betsaka eeee!!!
American-Malagasy accent - got to love it ;) If I may, where did you learn malagasy?your basics seem somewhat different from what I learned. Not that it's wrong, I am just wondering about if your learned a different dialect. It seems like it might be off compared with 'official' malagasy... ?
Wow, tandroy is a lot different than Betsimisaraka. Do you plan on making videos for Ofisialy and Betsimisaraka? There are elders in those regions as well, yes?
-PCV Madagascar 2013-2015
thank you ㅎㅎ
We are trying to start working with Malagasy workers in my locality, i hope it will be useful ! Thanks in advance

Hi guys, Lesson 1 in how to speak Malagasy. This is how you say I love Jesus.
tsara tsara !! :)
she also says: merci!merci!merci!
I wpould like to stay a long time in Madagascar and i'd need to learn the malagasy language. Do you know a good school in Tana or elsewhere ? Tk U for your answer.
Hi, It's good !! but I advice you to use the official malagasy, because if we use the official all people in the big island will understand what you mean.
For example: Baka aia iha ? (Where you from? in Toliary language) few people now this phrase. But if you say "Avy aiza ianao?" All Malagasy people now it.
wow!... I'm impressed!...how many years have you been in Toliara?
It seems slightly similar to Swahili, but certainly, they're different languages!
raho must means something you wrote it several times but i still cant pinpoint exactly what its representing.. imho in order to teach language you must explain each and every single word separately, and later try to make or explain a complete sentence. sometime each language has different word arrangement, sometime upside down from our own language. you must make people aware of and familiarize with this, imho. why i came to this video is that, it is said we came from madagascar a very very long time ago... cheers.
Hia, what's your name? I'm Tiako. I'm from Madagascar, but I live at Bristol Zoo. Where do you live? Where are you from? What do you like? How old are you? I'm 32 1\2 in lemur years. I like to eat, and listen to music, especially the guitar. I would like to introduce you to Jesus. Thankyou
(Salama, ia ty anaranao? Tiako ty anarako. Baka Madagascar Raho, mipetrake amy ao amin'ny zaridaina Bristol raho. Mipetrake aia vao riha? Baka aia vao riha? Ino ty raha teaneo? fire tao vao roha? 32 1\2 tao raho, amin'ny taona Lemur. Teako mijisa mihina sakaf. Teako mijisa mihaino mozika, teako mijisa guitara, . Raho avy eto hitory ty vaovao mahafaly, filazantsara. Misaotra)
which apparently translates to;
“Hello, and what's your name? I like my name. Baka Madagascar Raho, sitting in the park in Bristol. Are you new to riha? Is there a new rhyme? What do you want to do? a fire in the air? In the year of Lemur there was a roe. I wanted to eat a meal. Listen to listening to music, I guess a guitar,. Come out to preach the good news, the gospel. Thank you”
but in malagasy, that would be:
“Hello, ary inona no anaranao? Tiako ny anarako. Baka Madagasikara Raho, mipetraka ao amin'ny kianjan'i Bristol. Vaovao ve ianao amin'ny riha? Misy rime vaovao ve? Inona no tianao hatao? afo amin'ny rivotra? Tany amin'ny lemak'i Lemora dia nisy ando. Te hihinana sakafo aho. Henoy ny fihainoana mozika, mahatsiaro guitare aho. Mivoaha mba hitory ny vaovao tsara, ny filazantsara. Misaotra anao”
which means;
“Hello, and what's your name? I love my name. Baka Madagascar Raho, located in Bristol Square. Are you new in the library? Is there new rhyme? What do you want to do? fire from the wind? There was dew in the plains of Lemora. I want to eat. Listen to music, I guitar. Go out to preach the good news, the gospel. Thank you”
either google translate is silly, or madagasy is a funny pony
Hi Mr Douglas, I'm from Mauritius and wish come and live in Madagascar. What can you give me as consent ?
Misaotra betsaka anao. Fitenim-paritra any aminay io ampiasainao io. tsara e!
interesting how malagasy is not african but actually related to indonesian, filipino and pacific languages
yes, you're right , there are multiple vocabulary simular with the malaysian languages, example: in malagasy you say dimapolo (fifty) and in malaysia language they say (lima puluh), and other more ...
Hi, are ou fluent in malagasy? I'm planning to go to Madagascar and I would like to learn a few words before leaving,so that I won't be completely lost. Do you think you can help me?

Handsome :)
Tsara be video nao thank
This is southern malagasy, not the official malagasy. It is important to emphasize that since you can only be understood by southern malagasy people if you speak like this as it is the region language the least understandable by the other regions of Madagascar. But if you want to communicate with bigger audience, the official malagasy language is recommended
Ranavalona!!!!!!

Very interesting but it's not the official Malagasy language, it's the language of the south part. I think teaching the official one will be better because every Malagasy people will understand it. Many Malagasy people can't understand the language of the south part.
misaotra betraka
I tried to say the Baka ___raho to my friend from Madagascar and he didn’t understand . Actually baka didn’t come up on the dictionary either. In another language -Japanese Baka is actually a bad word haha
Your friend must be from a different part of Madagascar. The reason why "baka" doesn't exist in the dictionary is because is because it's a regional vocabulary but not in the Official Malagasy.

I wonder if you could help me. I would be very grateful.
My friend is getting married and his roots are from Madagascar. I would like for his bachelor party for him to learn a pledge for his wife.
how would you say : I (name) pledge my eternal love and loyalty to you my dear (name).
I (anarana) Manome toky ahy ny fitiavana sy ny tsy fivadihana mandrakizay ho anareo malalako (anarana)
this is what google tells me, but I have no idea how to pronounce it...
Thank you
KIllakmet Did someone answer you yet ? I could help you, I am a native malagasy. I can record this for you if you want. Send me private message and I will send it to you ^_^
Le ZombieAgressif Que puis-je faire pour t'aider ?
It's sad to me to see people proselytizing native cultures. Teach math, teach science, not religion... but I appreciate the lesson. Hopefully I will be there in the near future to counteract the damage you're doing to the culture
malagasy langauge same like bahasa indonesia

How can you say people in the bush? That's derogatory
Misaotra anao fa ny tompo ny agnampy anao
lol this is sad, france occupied malagasy for many years so it would be logical to find video in french to teach malagasy but nothing, i know we french are so lazy when concerning about to learn foreign language. and best video come from usa, well france will get what they deserve and they just deserve that gasy forget about french and learn english instead, that is sad but i don t mind english is convenient to communicate ( by the way gasy people speak really good french it s impressive) they should communicate their method to french school cause we kind of dragon to speak english ( or any foreign language)
usa mormon?
Le ZombieAgressif yes, sound like my English teacher ( in France) but anyway it s better than .... everytime i say a malagasy word my whole family bust laughin... hem that remind me that my daughter giggle as well when i speak in English with my rotten french accent, lol
accent is a difficult thing in language and some people can catch the right prononciation some don t and probably never will ( i knew a guy that settle in england got family and all, but when he speak English he got a light french accent and even when he go for Holiday in France he catch a little English accent so basically everywhere he go he s a foreigner )women are generally better to learn language and get no accent
Le ZombieAgressif no it s no statistic, and i know some women who are crap to learn just how to open a can lol, but from my little existence i met lots of persons that were talking foreigner languages , and statistically i met more women with a good accent than guys or in other words in all the people i met and who were talking a new language , generally women were doing better and faster, i think that s because women are more onto language , they use language far more than men and talk better and if equality came among politician we will have more and more politician woman because they use more language and speech;
Le ZombieAgressif
well be carefull what statistic or books or media will try to make you believe , for i trust more my own experience and first hand knowledge that info from friends, but anyway it doesn t matter , all i can say , i seldom heard a french male speak really good english without accent unless he lived in englangd for decades, and i have see more often women starting a language and were already very good at it especially for having not strong accent. i think women are up to language and like to talk , while men are more shy and also fear to be ridiculous so they will avoid to practice and stay longer in a position of a beginner than a woman , of course not all women and not all men but a greater majority
Le ZombieAgressif 😄
mdr il a plusieur dialect

Tanj9na - Malagasy army they speak this dialect because Highlanders are ALL Christian, they are seeking the poor and hungry further south without that long Christian history to convert.
basically they are easy prey to get.
