The singer is Derek Mc Cormack from Drogheda Co. Louth Ireland, sadly Derek is no longer with us, he died in 2004 (God rest you Derek you were one of the best)
Can't begin to tell you how much I love this song, I don't think anyone could ever sing it better than Derek, so sad he has passed away, but his music will live on for ever.
I was lucky enough to meet and play with Derek and John at the Cleveland Irish Festival back many years ago and he died the just before the next. A kinder and gentler man I've never met. All the older music groups were all heartbroken and all gave a special performance to in memorial. I especially remember the Fury Brothers.
One of the best singing voices to ever come out of Ireland. And that's up against some very stiff competition. One of my all time favourites. Cheers from Australia
The most talented of all the Irish balladeers, and there has been a veritable cornucopia of outstanding songsters from the Emerald Isle. What a voice, what a naturally gifted musician... and what a waste that he was taken from us at such a young age. The God guy certainly works in mysterious ways!!! RIP Derek.
Derek must be one of our best ballad singers.beautiful voice such a pity he passed so suddenly at such a young age,He was only in his prime and should have lived to make so many more recordings.
This is one of the most emotion packed songs that I have ever heard. I found this song after I read the book "1916" so the song really packs with feelings
A great singer, and a very suitable tribute to Padraig Pearce who was executed in the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916,. 100 years ago.(thats who the song is about)
I'm listening to the mandolin player and enjoying his control of his instrument - included the loudness - always heard, never showing off or climbing on top - just wow! Who is he?
Sharon, that is so cool. I really miss going to that Irish festival. We have an Irish pub right down the street call Rasher Tierney's. I've only been there once, though. I'll never forget how we used to make our kids listen to "Mam's Lullibye"
Its about padric pearse before he was executed in kilmanham jail , the song lyrics are derived from the letter he wrote his mother before his execution
just rediscovered this most brilliant group and Derek's beautiful lyrical voice.what a loss to Irish music. not sure who the song is about. Slan,Derek. rip.
songs like this should be played on national radio every day ireland forever
THE SADNESS AND BEAUTY OF THIS SONG MAKES IT A CLASSIC.
