- This is my first time pruning my 5 year old persimmon trees in May/June because the trees grow too low and weeping on the ground with heavy load of fruits. I hope to get a good result, but only time will tell. Check out my update later on in the season.

It's okay to get out of your comfort zone sometimes. I am glad that I did. Now I will know how my trees will response instead of wondering for years.

Paul K. I am seeing leaves curl and loss of leaves, is that what happening to the tree? I am not sure why but my trees got the same issue last year. No harm to them though. Your tree does look mature. I hope it will get through this year.

Thank, my first time actually doing gardening and we have 2 persimmons in TN. One has 21 fruits but starting to fall, so disappointing. Thanks for talking thru your thought process, easy to understand.
Persimmon fruits do tend to drop. I find that is normal. It will only leave as many as the tree size can handle. Not like pears and apples. They're also very sensitive. So, sudden frost or pruning or anything weird can affect the tree. This year we got a couple nights of high 20's and all flowers were dead and it took a good month before it pushed out new leaves again. But it's rewarding when you do have yummy fruits at end of season.
Persimmon trees bough from Nursery will not bearing fruit until 3-4 years later. They have ton of flowers and will fall off 1/2 is normal.

If you want a strong healthy persimmon tree, you will need to cut off the fruit for the first 3-5 years. It is very hard to do, but leaving fruit on it will consume all the energy and nutrients. My relatives did what you did (allowing it to fruit) and their tree is leggy like yours while mine has a thick main trunk and strong supporting branches. The first planting, I cut the tree at knee height.
Thanks k9driver. You are right, I left the fruits on during the 3rd year. Not many just 20 or so, but yeah the branches are leggy. I like thick trunks so now I am correcting it now. Yes I did top mine to be short. All of my tries are short and I hope in the next couple years they will have better shape and stability for more fruits. My family let them grow naturally and they have branches broken and damaged and die very early.
k9driver, I am glad you put this comment and thank you! I planted my first persimmon tree recently and I cut it at knee height. I watched videos on persimmon growing and they all did not cut their persimmon at knee height planting time and I was wondering if what I did was wrong.
I'm so bad about pruning because I can't put myself in doing it, seeing you pruned away branches that's help give some me courage to do. Thanks your yard and plant are looking fabulous. I’ve been growing fuyus since 1980’s made many mistakes after 2008 I finally slapped myself to read a pruning book on persimmons.
Wow.. that's a long time. I hope you've learned some great things over the years. And how are you doing with the trees after reading the book?
Fruit is on new growth branches, but it weighs down a lot on the branches. I prune mine back a lot to save the tree, but I think it means I get less fruit.

Our persimmon we never pruning and too much fruit and maybe 10 bucket 🪣 of persimmon, it’s not a grapes to pruning, you just hurting the persimmon tree🤦♀️😊
Nice experiment! Curious if you ever harvest the leaves? I dry them and add to my coffee or make tea.
No. I've never thought of doing that. I'll check it out. Are there any good health benefits ?
@@fishsaucemama yes, there are many health benefits including lowering blood pressure. I would do a quick Google search to find all of the benefits, but definitely worth a try. I collect the leaves and place them in a bin with a piece of glass or plexi glass covering it and stick it out in the sun. I flip the leaves around every so often as well as the glass, because it will form lots of moisture.
Yeah, I did a quick search and it sounds awesome for tea. I love tea so this would be something I'd totally do
9/10 of my terminal buds grow out pointing down. It's so annoying. I reckon I will have to prune short most of the branches in summer
That's annoying I know. I pruned mine in the summer this year around July. Light pruning and removed skinny weak branches. The trees got shock and did not grow any more new branches. When I pruned the branches were brown and full grown for the season. It didn't shock one of my trees too much, some fruits are still hanging on and maturing.
Thank you for sharing. I have 5 years old persimmon trees grow from seats, but still has no fluids, what should I do?
I do not know why but from my experience with my trees, pruning too much during the growing season with make it keep pushing out more leaves. Too much nitrogen it will not fruit but put out more leaves. Is your area cold enough that have about 100-200 hours of low temperature around 30-40F?. Not enough chill hours it might not fruit. Early season shocks like unexpected frost or excessive pruning it will not fruit. I hope it helps.

I did the same as you did to my fig trees couple years back so far so good. Got two persimmon trees (will it makes trees grow back slower) wanna see update 😁👍
Same here with my Fig.
For persimmons, they're very sensitive. I pruned them to maintain thick and short branches. They stop putting out new shoots and reserve their energy. They can also drop a lot of fruits. They will grow faster and pushing out more branches next season.
I think I like the shape of my trees now. I will be just pruning out weak branches in the future. They are 6 years old now. Definitely will do an update later. Thanks and good luck.
Fish Sauce Mama agreed, persimmon trees are really sensitive my 7 years old tree got lots of fruits and dropped a bunch too. I only trimming (pruning)after harvest. My two years old tree didn’t bear any fruits this year cause I pruned it in March (she was mad I guess)😂😂 not too many people grow back yard persimmon trees in my state (MD)
You got that right.. they can be pretty mad at you for pruning them. Persimmons are not something you can find at the regular supermarket so people don't really know about them until they get a taste of them then they have to grow foe more. They're often known as wild fruits and mostly for wild animals.
Hey do you know if I can graft different varieties on my fuyu? I’m thinking about grafting giant fuyu and hachiya varieties to my tree
I haven't tried, but going to this winter. I only have 4 fuyu and a ichi ki kei jiro. They're similar but seems fun for an experiment.
Hi , I live in philadelphia , I bought persimmon this year, I planted on the ground but the leaf is crispy and fall in July . I give that tree full sun . I think is almost dying. Did you think my tree have to be moved to shape places? Can u suggest to me Thanks
Beast time to plant the tree is during the cool time like spring. I just add another tree this year in april when the weather was in the 70's. Watered every other day. Dug a hole twice the width and mixed in some garden soil. The leaves are crispy, the tree might be dying. If you scrape the trunk with your finger nail and it's still green, it might be still alive. They like full sun, but you can move to area maybe gets about 5-6 hours of sun. Make sure they are not root rot if you water too much in clay and smush soil.

@@fishsaucemama , I’ve seen another video and the man said that persimmon trees do not like to be overwatered. It’s the surest way to kill them.
I am lucky that in my area we have the right amount of rain. I haven't had to water it at all except the initial planting time. They're very care free really.

How any years persimmon can get fruit
A grafted persimmon should fruit in 3 years. I got mine was grafted and it fruited the first year but only a few fruits. Also depends on your zone. Sometimes the frost comes late and flowers can get damaged here in zone 7b.
