Thanks for the video. Have you tested at how long distance you can keep the mic from your head and still get good quality audio? I have been really trying to research this thing. I'm thinking whether I should buy a shotgun mic or would DJI Mic be reasonably good
Only thing that's not mentioned that IS worth mentioning is that some of the features Jeven mentions are new features. I hadn't updated my DJI Mic firmware since purchased...'cause I had no problems. I'm guess sooo many people who have had this for better than a year haven't looked for an update. Features since they first came out are: REC Stop Lock Auto Record LED Brightness (both RX and TX) Auto RX Power Off Option The main menu I'd also altered and easier to go to the RX settings. Thanks Jeven! Great Vid, this really helps explain some settings and would have saved me hours of trial and error.
@@jonnanieminen8848 i taped the dji to my friends mic who's in a band and the audio came out excellent. the only issue im having is that it records in 30 minute increments
Just a quick tip for folks synching their backup recording in post using Final Cut Pro : - Import your video and your audio file, then select "create multicam clip". This will usually instantly synch your audio with your video. Saved me a lot of time!
I'm a pro-audio guy. Pretty good explanation, but to clarify gain staging, the steps ought to be 1) set the transmitter gain so it is in the range you desire (probably just into the yellow as an average), 2) set the receiver gain so that it is also averaging just into the yellow, 3) set the camera input gain so it is averaging just into the yellow. This is common gain staging technique, and once you've done it a few times, it's really easy to do on-site and on-the-fly. Every scenario is going to be different, so it really ought to be done for each shoot. As for the low-cut, 150hz is a little on the high side, so I would generally suggest leaving the low-cut off and adding a filter in post if it's needed. For reference, most audio consoles that have a low-cut button (and no adjustable frequency) have it somewhere between 80 hz and 120 hz.
Could I ask a specific question : I will be recording some shots in which there will be chainsaw use. So, medium / loud audio while saw is idling, then very loud audio when the saw is running full throttle. Are the "safety" channels sufficient for this kind of recording or should something different be done? Just curious.
@@SouthernItalyHomestead Unfortunately, the answer is, "it depends". I suspect that the safety channel will be a sufficient differential, but maybe a creative edit where the sound of the chain saw is covered by music may be a good option if it doesn't work out.
Something worth mentioning, the effect of reciever gain on dji mic does not display on its screen, or the monitoring headphone pluged into dji mic reciever. Only the camera audio level bar or headphone pluged into camera is affected by reciever gain.
Hey Jeven. I do dentistry full time and I listen to your videos while im filling teeth. I listen to them all the way through and im unable to skip the ads so I hope im helping your insights. Please keep it up. I dream of cutting the cord from work and making money on TH-cam. Someday
Exceptional video, Jeven. Lots of invaluable information, clearly explained. Kudos to you! Two small things I noticed: At 5:56, after talking about the 6db pad on the Mono with Safety track, you say that the backup recording is "-20db lower." I knew what you meant--that's it's actually -6db--but it might cause confusion to some. The other thing is something I just learned moments ago on another excellent TH-cam tutorial--after you update to the new firmware released in January (Vers. 2.00.72.87), you can now completely turn off the LEDs on the transmitters while using them. Granted, this is not about sound, but I thought you might like to know. All in all though, this was an outstanding tutorial and I'm grateful you took the time to make it.
Best advice is to lower the camera gain as far as possible, because that's generally where noise is introduced the most (especially with Canon cameras). Then you have only TX and RX to worry about.
I just stumbled upon this comment, how low you mean, if its 0 doesn't record audio even with mic on, if its 1 its super low. I had my camera mic gain at 23 and the dii transmitter at 0 and picked up so much background noise at a convention event, was pretty pissed.
@@KN-mi7mh You have to try with different values to find the sweet spot, but keep the camera gain value as low as you can while still getting a decent signal. There should be some kind of audio meter in the camera to show you the level being picked up, so use that to keep around -6 db max.
@@KN-mi7mh i'll give you my personal example, i usually work with canon camcoders and set the camera volume between 15 and 20, auto gain is too high, from there, i set the rx gain in a -5 and tx gain +4, works fine at loud enviroments, i usually do live streaming of youth football so the crowds are very noisey here in Mexico, but you have to sometimes play with the mic values depending on how loud the backround noise is, if it´s too loud i go down in the rx at a -6.
12:32 On an iPhone, there’s a work around to get stereo input. Just use a female usb c to Lightning and use the usb c attachment on the receiver. I got a pack of 3 for 6 dollars on Amazon. It works like a charm.
I set my transmitter gain to +6, and receiver gain to +12 and in FCP the VU meters only hit -12 playing back and that's boosted in FCP by raising the line all the way. DJI mics are recording too low I think.
I watched your beginners tutorial. I was specifically interested in the sound settings (mono, stereo, mono s), technicalities aside, I found the most intuitive way to set the sound up to your desired channel/setting was simply to plug in some external headphones to use as monitors while you are setting up. That gives instant feedback while you play with the settings. Quicker than recording various clips, uploading to your computer, trying to ascertain what speaker the sound is coming out from. This method gives you realtime feedback. Great video by the way. Thanks for sharing.
I find that with the mic connected to the camera, the sound is muffled. I totally forgot about the stand-alone recording feature it has 💀😭. Being an audiophile, I completely left out that step 🤦🏽♂️.
Thanks for this video. I've been running the gain a bit hot on my camera because I didn't know the transmitters had their own gain. lol. I've only been adjusting the gain on the camera and receiver. This made my sound better! Thank you!

Its a really amazing product and this is a excellent user guide to get the best audio from it. Personally, I only ever use stand-alone TX'er and then sync it via wav file to my video footage in Davinci Resolve. So helpful! I purchased a DJI mic about 3-4 months ago and have been using it with my iPhone. My Sony A7C came in the mail today and lo and behold this video pops up which reminded me that I needed a refresher on how to use the the DJI mic with an actual camera. Thanks Jeven! Great info.
It works fine with the iPhone? I read on other videos a lot of people were having problems with sound quality when trying to use their iPhone .something about only recording in mono?
You just saved me so much time! Thank you. I can’t wait to use these things. Also they allow you to turn the lights off now. I wonder if you had something to do with that.
Adjusting the audio level at the right level without distortion is not the problem. I've adjusted all three gain settings (transmitter, receiver and Canon M50 camera) to get the best sound (+8 on the transmitter, +5 on the receiver and as low as possible on the camera seemed to work the best). The problem is the sound just sucks. I can't really describe it other than it just sounds cheap and not real. I couldn't even tweak it enough in Resolve to be acceptable. Taking the sound from just the transmitter is a little better than running it through the entire set-up. Being on the talent side of the glass, not the tech side, I've recorded 1,100 movie sound tracks as a French horn player. Take it for whatever it's worth. Disappointed with this product and all the hype. The videos are good, Jeven. My only criticism is maybe just get to the point a little faster.
You can try buying a separate lav mic to attach to the transmitter , it sounds better than the onboard microphone on the transmitter. Hope this helps !
This was so incredibly helpful. I don’t know how it’s gonna turn out when I plug the transmitter into my soundboard for a music gig, but we’ll see. One of the problems I am really having is my iPhone or my Samsung phone will not I repeat, not see the receiver. I don’t know what the fix is for that. I can’t find any answers online.
0 DB on the transmitter for interviews/ -4 BD on the receiver / GH5 amps set to almost nothing, like -11 or -10 DB, I believe. Be sure mics (transmitters) are at the same level if they are positioned the same way on talents. A - (or +) 2 BD difference between them will result in a huge and disturbing effect in sound HQ.

Jeven, got these DJI a year back and your 2 videos were a great help in getting started. And they do work well. I have recently added a becktex preamp to connect the DJI to and then the Beacktek and then the Sony A7iii and then out to OBS. Starting to experiment wit the gain staging - any suggestions? Thanks
Great video! It happened to record and mono is there a way to separate the two receivers onto separate audio channels, or are they baked in to the footage for good?
Hello! Great video...question that I can't see to find an answer on: Does the dji mic protect against clothing rustling? With my past lapel mics that rubbed up against clothing, you can hear the rustling of the cloths which would impact the main audio.
So in sum and in your case - what are you settings on transmitter, receiver and Sony A7Siii a)with and b) without a lavalier microphone? And what lav are you using? Cheers.

Jeven thank you as I'm about to use this thing on trail with 2 people. I'll be interviewing people along the way and can adjust some of these settings when recording trail musicians! Thank You!!
First thanks Jeven. This tutorial helped tremendously when I first used the DJI Mic. Question: Can I connect two receivers to GoPro utilizing a splitter so that I can run up to 4 mics? Any suggestions on splitter? Any issues in post? Thanks in advance!
Thank you so much for all these great tutorials. I just got this set up and have been trying to plan on the most effective way to use it. I will be using it to film hunting content . Therefor only rolling with audio when there is action or dialog. I would say there will be dialog in the beginning of each video with some sort of interview before going into the woods filmed with a action cam or cell phone . Instead of hooking it to my phone or action cam to record a 1 min segment would it be best just to record straight into the transmitter? While going into the woods there may be some Dialogue here and there would it be best to keep that transmitter rolling or will that just be too much to edit in post? It may take 10-60 min to get into a spot to hunt. I could also just turn the transmitter on when needed for dialog on the way in but I’d rather not have to remember to do that. I will likely have my action cam rolling on the way in to the spot. Once in the spot I think I will record the audio straight into my canon g50 with the receiver and using the transmitter as a lapel. This would only record audio when the cannon is recording tho which I think would be best for editing. I would also have a splitter so I could record with the shotgun mic on my cannon and my DJI. Just trying not to complicate the editing process more than I have to. The other option would be l to record the audio into my action cam with the receiver and lapel style but I normally have that plugged into a external batt source already. Am I looking at that right or does this sound complicated to what you would do? Thanks again sorry for the long winded comment
Excellent job, 1st-Class production!! (jealous, btw). I can give insight for those asking about a Sony A7iv in which you MUST boost the Rx gain a lot (at least +10), if you want to keep the Sony's Audio Level as low as possible; seemingly every pro-audio expert's advice. I have a very strong "speaker's" voice, and yet, my Tx really needs to be at +6 to even tap the Yellow. Hope this helps.
I’m still thinking about getting these. Seems like the best setting for me on gain would be to match it so that I don’t have to change my camera setting between using these or the plug-in mic I use now. But I just do run and gun random vlog type stuff. Seems like this would be great for doing that since the transmitters and receiver are independently adjustable. Thanks for the video!
What are the steps you take for gain staging the DJI mic. I have an A7S3 and I just bought the DJ I Mic. It's my first time working with audio and im unsure as to which setting I should adjust first and what I should be looking for when im adjusting them.
@@JevenDovey the intermittent on and off problem also happened with this Dji Mic? I have my Saramonic Blink 500 B2 always experienced that frustrating problem when it comes to record in dense RF environment such as car exhibition
How do you hear play back on the iPhone with the receiver plugged in? I’m finding that every time I need to unplug the receiver to hear what I just reported. Is there any settings or anything I am doing wrong?
And if I also wanted to connect a microphone of another brand to the camera so as to have an environmental trace in addition to that of the dji receiver?
Instructions are great. I’m a total newbie I’ll be sure to experiment with different settings. BTW do you have a video say just working with the DJI action 3? That’s what I’m using
Have you found the mic to be quite hot? It sounds like it’s distorting when you say extra loud words in this video. I’m having the same issue with min and I keep having to lower the gain. What transmitter gain are you using?
Excellent tutorial as usual. You teach in a way which a three year old can understand. Without it sounding as though you are talking in a way which a three year old can understand 😊
Thanks for share the video. Having just purchased them, I've noticed an interference problem when using different lavalier microphones, which can be resolved by covering the receiver with my hand. Have you ever experienced it?
At 08:50 you're talking about duplicating the audio track, how is that done? I've done a recording in stereo, I've used both mic's which are producing different audio levels and then I've followed your instructions by altering the audio to dual mono but I can't work out how to then individually adjust each audio channel as you are doing in the video? Can anyone help please?
What is this skipping issue that some users talk about? It seems to be in the backup recording and if thats the case it sounds very annoying. But is it true or something that has been taken care of or just not true?

Am I looking at that right or does this sound complicated to what you would do? Thanks again sorry for the long winded comment
Excellent job, 1st-Class production!! (jealous, btw). I can give insight for those asking about a Sony A7iv in which you MUST boost the Rx gain a lot (at least +10), if you want to keep the Sony's Audio Level as low as possible; seemingly every pro-audio expert's advice. I have a very strong "speaker's" voice, and yet, my Tx really needs to be at +6 to even tap the Yellow. Hope this helps.
Great tutorial! Thanks for putting it together. My DJI mics just arrived. I'm looking forward to upping my audio game, starting tomorrow.
thank you so much for this guide - man there's so much to this mic setup!
I just picked this up. I appreciate the guide. Very good!
I just got this set of wireless mics and I am excited to start using them. 😀
Thank you for a wonderful tutorial. It is correctly paced, well illustrated, and clearly spoken.
is there any cable required to connect dji receiver with gopro hero 5?
Can you do this with the dji action camera 4 with the dji mic
Excellent tips and helpful closeups during operation - - helped me out immensely, thank you!💯
Great tutorial for the DJI Mic! So much information I didn't know about. Thanks for sharing.
Really well done. Thanks!
Would you still recommend the dji mic 1?
What are the steps you take for gain staging the DJI mic. I have an A7S3 and I just bought the DJ I Mic. It's my first time working with audio and im unsure as to which setting I should adjust first and what I should be looking for when im adjusting them.
Brilliant video mate!
Great video with tons of useful information. Thank you!
I just use the dji mic connect it to a sennheiser MKE 600 for wireless capability and it was great
The tutorial I´ve been waiting for. Excellent video!!👏👏
Glad you liked it!
man i don't even have this dji mic but still i watched this whole video. amazing info
love it ❤
have you ever tested this mic indoor situation such as car exhibition to test it's stablity operation in dense RF environments?
Yes and it works. Not always perfect but thats why you have the backup on the transmitter.
Is there any settings or anything I am doing wrong?
you can use airpods!
@@arthurludena you connect it to your phone or DJI

I was just wondering why my recorded sound from the (DJI mic) transmitter was so low, and then I found this very useful video. Thanks !
Thanks for the tutorial. Helps me to improve my videos on my channel. 👍
We just bought these and DJI doesn't include instructions. This is exactly the kind of video we needed, so thank you!
And if I also wanted to connect a microphone of another brand to the camera so as to have an environmental trace in addition to that of the dji receiver?
Thank you for the great video, when you were in the office, did you also use the dji mic for the audio?
Love from India 🇮🇳. I just love watching your vdos. Everytime I learn something new. Thanks.
Instructions are great. I’m a total newbie I’ll be sure to experiment with different settings.
BTW do you have a video say just working with the DJI action 3? That’s what I’m using
How come you have the angled cable, I got a straight cable which I can't even connect to the camera, I bought it last week.
Very detailed and so useful for dji mic users. Thank you always for these intuitive videos 👍
Excellent content and guidance Jeven. Thanks.
How do we update the firmware to have the lights off when recording?
Great video. Nice not having a distracting soundtrack. Thank you
