How To Pass The Army's Combat Fitness Test (HBO)

  • For the first time in nearly 40 years, the United States Army is changing how it measures the physical fitness of its soldiers. Over the course of the next year and a half, the Army will roll out the new Army Combat Fitness Test, or ACFT, to its 1.1 million soldiers across the globe. It’s hoped that the new test will prepare troops for the rigors of combat, something that some commanders say the old test was failing to do.
VICE News correspondent Alzo Slade headed down to Fort Eustis, Virginia, to see if he could measure up.

VICE News 21 min 2 mile run is a dream time. What age bracket is that for? Cause when I was in the Army minimum time was 16:30 for a 17-29 year old if I remember correctly. The rest of the test is easy stuff to get ready 2 mile run with the minimum time back in my day was the killer to prep for.

I think the exercises are more applicable on this PT test than the previous. However, the standards are too low. If I am not mistaken, they try to make it gender neutral (which isn't a problem in itself). The problem comes in when instead of raising the standards for females, they lower the standard for males to accommodate the females.
This is coming from someone who is in a combat MOS' , so a pog perspective may be different. The pt test does seem to accommodate POGs and infantry with different pt standards, which is good.

There's enough gay rules in the Army already no one wants it to be another Marine Corps. You want to be a Marine you go and earn that title with their rules not in the Army.

My time in the Army was marked by the raising of standards across the board, in all phases of military life, as the institution finally recovered itself from the mess of Vietnam and the Hollow Army of the 70's. DA [Dept. of the Army] was getting rid of the professional drunks in the ranks, smoking was slowly being clamped down on. Training standards were raised. Physical standards were being addressed. I well remember the uproar when the Post Commander of the last base I was stationed at ordered that ALL troops on post, whatever their command, did PT every single morning. And issued Article 15s [or NJPs for you anchorheads out there] to every single troop who didn't comply. Even a battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel got a letter of reprimand for no-showing.

As a Marine, I’m pumped that the Army has implemented a no-joke fitness test. I’ve modified my PT program as if I were training for some of these events and that has helped me improve my Marine Corps fitness test scores. I generally don’t give the Army a lot of props, but I will for this one.

I'm really glad you made this now I know how to train properly because Im making weight right now amd graduating and June or July. I'm making weight rn but I can do these to be ready ready. I ask my srgt but they don't tell me like it's some secret or something

Sgt** ,and they don’t tell you because it is taught to you at bct. They teach you specific form on how you must perform each task to their liking . if I were you I would only worry about making weight and getting in ,everything else will come just worry about the basics like running, pushups and pull-ups . Good luck !

In the uk we have similar standards, for people hoping to join the forces. Our combat fitness test which has to be completed every year for most ranks is 8 miles in 2 hours with 20kg of kit

Just left BCT @ Fort Sill at got a 493 had I lowered my 2 Mille by a minute I would’ve easily got 550. Hardest part is the sprint drag carry. Everything else was pretty easy as long as you gave a decent effort.

The Army installations need to create a PT shelter with a 400 meter track specifically designed for this test in each battalion or brigade area, so that the test can be administered in a timely fashion and all the equipment and stations are permanently set up. They shouldn’t leave it up to the individual units to set up this thing.

This old general has a point. In GWOT, most of the support personnel are protected by combat personnel. Usually the offense from the opposing force was minimal and the support personnel wouldn’t have to fight. However, in a conventional war there would be a much higher chance of having to actually fight off an attack as a “non combat” support soldier. It’s like the marines say, every marine is a rifleman first. The army needs to have the attitude that every soldier is a rifleman first. No more of this, well I’m a truck driver I don’t need to be combat ready. Yeah until you get ambushed by an opposing conventional army unit, your truck gets disabled, and you have to get out and fight right along side the infantry escorting you because you are out numbered.
