DIY Tire Bead Breaker (Almost Free) Tool Tip #27

  • In this video I make a tire bead breaker out of tools and material I already had on hand. I broke down several more tires later today and it was very fast as long as I stood on the tire to stop the bounce.
    The yellow lab is Summer. She is very companionable and follows me everywhere. She is almost 13 years old.
    Not everyone has a tractor. I usually use my backhoe attachment but I had this idea and I thought it would be a good video, especially helpful to the many folks around the world that do not have access to tractors or tire machines. I have viewers from all around the world, almost every country on earth. When I was much younger I had to scrounge around for used tires and I could not afford to pay for the tires to be mounted. I wish I had thought of this idea back then.

    The spring is softening the hammer impact. A solid slide hammer with no spring would likely be more effective in my opinion.

    I am a little late to the game, since I just discovered Ole' Mars' videos. It's good to see someone else trying things that may not work for the sport of it. My dog also enjoys watching the entertainment I provide, as yours do. I learned through the school of hard knocks to roll my tires under my truck bumper and use a hydraulic jack and 4x4 block under the bumper to pop beads. I realize I need to get one of those fence pounders instead of using a sledge hammer on posts around the place. I think I will get the one without the spring...

    This idea could work perfectly when the rim isn’t resting on rubber but something solid. Tailor a rim size 2x4 to suspend the rim and stand on the rim while pounding.

    Nice tool. Yes, I was watching the rim bounce as you were striking it due to the other side of the tire.
    A 2x4 under the rim will fix that OR stand on it as you did!! 👍🏼

    Hi MARS, I have used a scissor jack and a couple of wood blocks to break the bead on some tires. A bumper jack with foot plate works also. Use the weight of the vehicle at a solid frame or bumper location. Lube the area around the rim. Place the tire / rim under the vehicle with the block on top of the rubber next to the rim and extend the scissor jack till the bead pops. Beats a coronary ! Thanks for the vid....JK

    I would shorten the pole up, so instead of pounding at a 45 degree angle it would be a 90 degree angle and have someone else stand on the tire. Thanks for posting.

    Great job well done. I love changing tyres, a weird hobby I know but I love the satisfaction I get from it. Try this next time, instead of concentrating in one spot, try and move it round say a third of the circumference, back and forth 3 " a time, back and forth the same segment a little at a time, dont bang so hard that it gets trapped between tyre and rim - overall less effort is required

    The tire sidewall is cushioning your blows. Stand on the wheel so it compresses to a solid surface, take the bounce out. Cut more off the post so your post driver is at a comfortable height.

    Knock-Off Tyre Pliers for $50 works miracles... It broke all 4 of my Blazer's tire beads in just seconds... 2 different positions in one occasion , but it usually does it in a single press. Try it out... You'll never try any other manual technique :)

    I had an old Gator tire I wanted to put an inner tube in and tried a few things to get it off. I had not thought of the post driver. I had the most success with a 20ton jack and putting the tire between two 6x6 fence posts in an H-brace. I used a small pusher block to spread the load and and a short piece of 6x6 to make up the gap. It broke the bead loose with much less effort. But I decided it was going to be too hard to get the tire off and back on. So had the local tire shop do it. $10/tire was worth it.

    If you had the rim set on a solid block of wood, that would take the bounce out of the wheel when you hammer on it, and increase the shock to the bead. I would just dive over the edge of the tire with the rear wheel of the tractor.

    I made one similar to yours using my post driver -- I think the problem is that the bought version hits the rod at the tip, where our versions hits at the far end of the "post". This makes a lot of the force be absorbed, rather than being transmitted to the tip. I wound up getting the hydraulic tool, works great. ...but I think I will look thru my junk pile and try to make a slide hammer that uses the internal rod -- that would put the force at the tip of the tool -- oh yeah, and need a little soap makes this work much better

  • @rickl6697
    @rickl6697 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok this is an old video but this might help someone. To stop the tire from bouncing(and absorbing all your effort) lay the rim on a couple of 2x4's or 2x6's. That rubber tire is doing what rubber tires do. Bounce.

  • @fourfortyroadrunner
    @fourfortyroadrunner 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a commercial version of that which I got with an old manual tire changer. They are mostly useless. One problem you have, here, is that the wheel is not ridgedly anchored, in other words "everything is bouncing." It would be like trying to nail into a piece of thin wood flopping all over. If I were you I would search and Google for lever type breakers. There's a few using nothing more than a piece of 4x4 and a floor jack.

  • @gregpatey6355
    @gregpatey6355 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    your method would work great if you would grind the working end of the pipe smooth of any sharp edges, and then use some lube where you are contacting the rubber..... the whole premise is that the tool needs to be able to slip down near the rim to break the bead, because if you dont get right near the rim, the sidewall gets bent in and it actually tightens the bead so its even harder to remove... AND, the lube will creep in to the bead on every stroke so it will help it slip over the hump on consecutive blows.... in addition, you NEED to support the rim so it doesnt bounce, as most of the energy is being absorbed by the bouncing of the rim.

  • @nickaxe771
    @nickaxe771 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I was hoping you were going to stand on the wheel....the bounce was absorbing some of the force.....putting wheel against a wall would also help as its jumping away from you again loosing some force.
    The other thing.....go right around the whole of the wheel.....not just one section.
    But gread methed....I take my hat off to you Sir.

    I have a slide hammer - the expensive one and it works fine.. BUT! You need to have something solid under the wheel bead so the tire doesn't bounce! It can't bounce like it is in the video. Also - tire lube!!! Joy detergent in a spray bottle. Little things make all the difference!

    • @mars1952
      @mars1952  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I learned that when if I stood on the wheel while breaking the bead there was much less bounce. I show the improved technique in this video th-cam.com/video/NNfHEfYgFoE/w-d-xo.html

    • @MrDave9111
      @MrDave9111 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You got it! I had to learn that by the same method ---- I beat on it until I realized that it can't be this hard or else no one would buy a slide hammer bead breaker! With tires, technique is everything. If you ever get a chance to go to a busy truck tire place, watch the guys use a tire hammer to dismount semi truck tires.. Its amazing how skilled those guys get with those hammers.
