Being able to go inside and lay down on the ground and look up is incredibly surreal. Growing up living 20 minutes from the space center, and seeing the shuttle launches from my front yard, I never forget how fortunate I am, growing up this close to science and exploration.
It's a little thing, but I really appreciate you saying "As of 2024 this is true," instead of "Currently this is true." Helps give any future viewers a slightly more realistic experience. A small script change that raises the integrity of your work noticeably.
@@mikemizanin666 No problem at all... I'm saying I'm grateful that Jared Owen does that. Sure it's possible to see the date a video is uploaded, but a casual high school researcher isn't necessarily going to check that.
I didn't realise how tiny the Space Shuttle was compared to the Saturn V or the SLS. But makes sense since the Shuttle "only" needed to go in Low Earth Orbit. I'm so excited for the Artemis Program and hope this is the start of a new Golden Age of Space Exploration.
I think, the Space Shuttle also might go to moon if it designed as soviet "Buran", which has own fuel tank for more powerful OMS rockets. Maybe for moon mission payload bay will be reduced by fuel tank. The modified shuttle will be orbiting around moon release moon landing module from payload bay and waiting before it come. And might be we got reusable moon spacecraft. Surely if NASA fix issues with orbiter's heat-resistant plates. And replace external tank to something else
The Shuttle has its stages sitting side by side, instead of on top of each other. It delivers almost a hundred tons to orbit - although most of that is the spacecraft itself.
Does anyone else feel like the crawler transporter is one of the unsung heroes of the space program? An amazing feat of engineering moving rockets for almost 60 years.
Yup. These two carried every single Saturn V, every single Shuttle, and now every SLS. They literally carried the US space program on their backs (at least until SpaceX)

Actually VAB also was used to assemble two other rockets: the Saturn IB during Skylab program and Apollo-Soyuz test project also the single ever constructed Ares I rocket for it's test flight (Ares I-X) before it was cancelled.
Hi jared, i am from india so english is not my first language that's why i use subtitles for understanding these videos more clearly but i don't need any subtitles for ur vidoes bcz ur vocie , pronounciation is crystal clear for me thank you for these videos...❤
That's just made my Friday a little better: A new Jared Owen video. As ever it is beautifully animated, painstakingly researched, and thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks Jared
Jared is a gem and a masterclass in his own right. I can't thank you enough for sharing your educational, dynamic, and concise story-telling videos with us. 😁
One of the rockets assembled in the VAB not mentioned in the video is the Saturn IB, used to send astronauts to Skylab. Its second stage is the same as the Saturn V’s third stage, but it had only two stages total. To make use of as much infrastructure as possible, a “milk stool” structure was built on the mobile launch platform to bring the S-IVB and Command Service Module of Saturn IB up to the same levels as they were in the Saturn V. It looked a little strange, but it worked.
8:56 Regarding the crawler-transporter, I've read an amusing story about its origins. A NASA engineer visited an open-cut mine where a gigantic excavator was digging. He climbed into the cabin, where mine staff explained how it moved. The engineer agreed the concept would be ideal for moving a giant rocket. He then grabbed a handle and said he was ready for them to move. The mine staff stared at him, puzzled. "What do you mean? We've been moving for the last give minutes!"
Hey Jared, I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I work on SLS and have spent a lot of time in the VAB over the past few years so I really appreciate the video!! You do a great job demonstrating and accurately describing the core components of this marvelous building. You explain things so well, I''ll be sharing this with my friends and family who are curious about my work! Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to produce this excellent content!!!
Jared, watching you assemble things piece by piece is statisfying. It’s almost like building a lego set! However, could you make videos explaining how engines work? I would reccomend all 3 airplane engines. Your videos are good, but not a single airplane video - yet. Please make a video explaining how planes work.
I've been to the KSC once. As you drive up you see a building in the distance and think "OK we're almost there." You are in fact about 20 minutes away and the building just gets bigger and bigger and bigger as you drive. The thing is massive, but because it is almost as wide and long as it is tall it doesn't look that big from a distance. But when you get there, it is just incredibly huge.
Jared Owen, you seriously are the kind of person who likes to study the INTERIORS of so many famous things that people don't even know how it works or what's inside it. You are such a good youtuber man! I appreciate your effort and hardwork. Keep it up! And have a like and sub from me!
It may be more than a single story, but it does hold the world record for biggest building by volume. In fact, it's so big that it actually has indoor weather systems. Small rain clouds sometimes form near the ceiling.
Amazing. I watched the Apollo 11 flight and moonwalk as it happened. I was 10 years old. Thank you for this. The amount of research, modeling, texturing, animating, editing, and narration is staggering!

This is really amazing. I always think of this rocket building part, before launch. Now I got the picture. Thanks much for sharing this tech animative video!! 🙂👏🏻
I remember taking a tour inside the VAB as a kid in the early 70’s. We were allowed in the building because the Saturn IV was unfueled during assembly. I went on to work as a civil servant for NASA. Security concerns and since the shuttle and SLS have fully fueled solid rocket boosters, open tours are no longer possible.
It's really awesome to see this building explained so well like this! Many people, even those who know a fair bit about rockets already, often forget that they don't just appear on the platform ready to go
I’d love it if you did a video on an express ski chairlift or gondola. But if you do decide to do a chairlift, do an express one. They are a lot more interesting and I think it would be cool to really visualize it with one of your animations.
1:37 When the VAB was a new building from the apollo era, the American flag and the NASA meatball logo wasnt there, A biccential star and flag was installed into the VAB exterior in 1976 to commonrate the 200th Birthday of the US. Then in 1998 the NASA meetball insignia was added to the VAB exterior. Good video BTW.
Thanks Jared. I really learned a lot about the Vehicle Assembly Building from this 3D animation. Learning there are three ways rocket components are delivered: By boat, by train, or by airplane. My favorite is the airplane. But of course depending on the components transported to the VAB the methods of delivery varies.
It’s absolutely incredible to see how much innovation went into this building! 😮 Thanks so much for this video, Jared! 🙌🏾 I look forward to the next one! 😌💫
