    I may have said this before, but this was the best interview ever. It was so interesting, that it would seem a panel discussion might be in order.
    Finally something that addresses the questions and ideas some of us have had since we can remember, but no one to talk to who didn't have a blank stare when you're sharing thoughts beyond the "written page."

    Derek lambert you helped save my life watching your first videos. In the first page of the bible it says God is in all of us so I believe when they saw God sees and knows all you do so I’m guessing it means we are our own God in a way, we should respect ourselves a lot more and live out best beautiful lives. Harm nobody else and forgive our neighbours as God is in them too. It’s good to see you it’s been a while.

    I really enjoyed that interview! Thank you for introducing a channel that I will check out.
    I started thinking of the Bible as Jewish and Early Christian mythology and folklore a few years after leaving the JWs, once I realized that the JWs believe they have the capital T Truth… just like pretty much every other religion.
    When I was able to let go of the literal perspective of the Bible, it did just what Derek mentioned, everything opened up. I found the work of Karl Jung and various Jungian psychologists, many of which examine the meaning in various cultures’ myths, folklore, and sacred texts.
    I particularly love that concept that these sacred texts can still have great value to humanity without having to be taken literally. Those stories hold the seeds of culture, society, and understanding life in a deeper way.

    I can relate to this guy. I was constantly tatting on myself for everything as a jehovahs witnesses. And was looked down on so much cause of it. But I was just very sincere and wanted to worship God whole heartedly, without dishonesty. I ended up getting disfellowshipped and stopped believing a year later. And now my extreme honesty and sincerity is still there but in regards to not being able to convert back due to what I have learned. I can't even pretend. It hurts my soul to be dishonest and live a lie. I'm still that way.

    By the way, when Derek is talking about crucifixion, it was most likely a cross. I know in the echo chamber we used to be in, they made fun of the idea of a cross. But atheist and Christian scholars agree thet given the textual evidence inside and outside the Bible, it probably had a crossbeam.

  • @barbdowns1
    @barbdowns1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I love the blind men and the elephant story. It’s one of my favorite metaphors for how things can be lost/missed/misunderstood in the process of discovery. That story got me wondering about how a caveman might explain unseen forces like wind, magnetism, and electricity (lightning, static). Sometimes I think that all these unseen/invisible phenomena that do exist in our natural world, maybe they’ve been misinterpreted through the ignorance and lack of scientific knowledge of times, and folks created these storied explanations to mollify their anxieties about them.
    And The Life of Pi film was marvelous! The book was even better, as film adaptations of books tend to be. The Giver is another book I strongly recommend in that same vein.
    My transition (after leaving the JW cult) from interfaith curiosity to borderline atheist (it’s a very thin sliver of doubt that remains) sounds very similar to Derek’s deconversion process. All the mythologies being so similar across cultures is something that led me to explore interfaith and unitarian universalist belief systems. Then I started to think that as parables, there may be some psychosocial educational value to express concepts related to human motivation and behaviors. But, aside from that, I no longer find the stories in any of the “divine texts” to necessarily be valuable as overall guidance for living life. They’re clever and often beautiful artifacts of prose and poetry, and that’s valuable to humanities and human culture. But that’s how I see their value in my life overall.
    Brilliant interview you guys! Thanks!!❤

    Derek's talk about Preterist eschatology and the styles of Reformed Christian/Presbyterian-style of worship compared to Charismatic Christian/Pentecostal/Evangelical Christian forms of worship was interesting. It shows you how diverse forms of religious worship are in Christianity and how Christians have vastly different interpretations of the end of the world.

    What a great video. Derek Lambert was an absolute delight. I think the parallels between religious myths is interesting, to compare similarities and notable differences. Samson and Hercules sort of illustrate that people in the ancient world were fascinated by tales of human beings with seemingly divinely endowed strength. The story of the global flood in the Hebrew Bible was probably borrowed from earlier Mesopotamian myths by the Israelites who put their own spin on this culturally shared idea. There are really two different portrayals of the Noah's Ark and the flood story in the BOOK OF GENESIS. I think religion evolved out of a shared human belief that there are forces greater than us in the world that surrounds us and at work in the wider universe. Most people view that greater power as being personified in the form deities, who may or may not be active in the world. The more you look at religions, the more you see how human these constructs are. They can be used for good or to cause harm.
    I'm an atheist, so no, I doubt that deities of any sort exist--but I don't claim to know for sure that a singular god or multiple deities do not exist. I accept that Jesus of Nazareth was a historical figure, and the view that I hold of him is one that most Biblical scholars would share: that he was itinerant Jewish preacher who engaged in exorcisms and faith healings who believed that the end of the world was imminent and was going to come in his disciples' lifetimes; that Jesus was crucified by Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius, and that he had a biological brother named James who led the early Christian community in Jerusalem in the 1st century CE. I doubt that he was the son of Yahweh, though he probably believed himself to be, nor do I believe that Jesus actually performed any supernatural miracles, though he probably really thought that he could. I doubt that he was resurrected from the dead, though his disciples probably had religious experiences that convinced them that God had brought him back to life, probably prompted by the high levels of grief and confusion they underwent through the loss of their beloved leader.
    Paul of Tarsus certainly believed that Jesus was a real person. In his writings in the New Testament, he writes of certain ideas about Jesus that scholars would say are likely to support the idea of there being a Jesus of Nazareth in history. He probably considered Jesus to have led a pre-earthly life and existence as some kind of angel before being born on earth, but then that belief was pretty much common amongst Christians at the time, so he wouldn't have been alone in that idea. I think Christianity inherited that idea about the Messiah from Judaism. As for Paul's religious experiences where a resurrected Jesus appears to him, I doubt that those were actually supernatural occurrences that he was undergoing, but they probably seemed authentic to Paul.

    Derek hits at the problem I see with mythicists - there’s this notion that if he existed, it somehow makes Christianity true or truer. This is absurd…even if much of gospel accounts of Jesus (pre-resurrection) could somehow be confirmed or supported strongly as history, it doesn’t validate any supernatural claims. If we find out Moses existed tomorrow, it doesn’t mean God talked to him on Mt Sinai. It’s like saying when we uncovered Troy, it makes the goddess Athena more plausible.
