Looks like you had a good shave! I will agree that the coti probably was a smoother edge and I have to buff on some trouble areas too. When I got my irl I was not impressed. I tried to raise a slurry and gouged the stone and had to leave it until I got a lapping plate. After lapping it, it produced way better edges. My favorite way to use this stone it to set the bevel with a Norton 1k, raise a slurry on the ilr and take it to shave ready. Good luck!

@@gnomeoshaves4641 with the ilr turn the slurry stone on it's edge or corner. I'll lightly rub it in circles all around the too of the ilr until it's milky. If you try to use the big flat surface of the slurry stone they'll just stuck together and forcing it will gouge the ilr.

Question...why are you struggling with stropping?

    • @gnomeoshaves4641

I didn't quite understand how tight to pull the strop vs how much pressure to put on the razor. I think I got it now. Plus, I recently realized my strop is really jacked up!

Great shave and thanks for the feedback. The ILR gets 50/50 reviews mainly because there are some straight up haters. No one knows where the stone comes from because they won't let anyone know where their source is and they don't want someone to try and claim their source. Keith didn't like it because the one he had chipped his razor and to be honest, I was not impressed with mine until I got it lapped down. I have since learned that I have not been maxing out the edges on the mid range stones before finishing them off on the Coticule, Jnat or the ILR.

You should always strop before a shave. Stropping doesn't sharpen the blade but it DOES straighten it.

I, in good conscience, couldnt shave using a razor that was honed by someone who hasnt even been using straight razors very long. The lack of experience in using the blades, also means a lack of experience in knowing when the edge is up to par.
