I never used to use heat protectant but I kept seeing online that it is necessary by hair professionals. I hate how you never know what is true and what is not.
I'm so glad that you are tackling these subjects because of the misconceptions about heat damage and its related 'protectants'. The first time I decided to do a length check, I thought I was being sensible by going to a salon after being natural doe about three years. Well, that girl must have passed that flat iron it seemed like a hundred times over one section. I had to ask her to stop and then she uttered those immortal words 'Your hair is to thick'. I jumped out of that chair before she could do me more harm and left with my hard earned coins!! You know how I do my length check now? I get a ruler...it's a lot less damaging!!!
I’m so glad you got outta her chair cause she was definitely going to burn the shit out of your hair! Most women are too “nice” and won’t say or do anything to protect themselves at the risk of hurting the other person’s feelings. Lame!
I completely agree with you !! I stopped using heat protectant sprays for years but then i recently tried it twice, and both times my hair felt greasy while straightening, and dry/split ends after a wash. Thank goodness I knew something was up and threw it out.
Exactly hence the reason some youtubers got heat damage.....good thing for cosmo school....calling my thick afro textured hair coarse without understanding the real meaning of coarse was a huge misconception for me....keep doing what u are doing!!!!!!! :-)
Your first reason sounds like the reason I once heard about why there where more accidents at traffic lights. People stop being cautious and looking left and right because they think the lights are making them safe. To be honest, I was about to get the protectant myself, to use with high heat haha, I'll just stick with low heat and patience
I have fine hair with differing wave/curl patterns. Realized long ago my hair does not like heat. Said no to sulfates two years ago and have not turned back. Recently, I started to avoid any product with silicone. My hair is responding very well. My new stylist told me that I am doing a wonderful job caring for my curls. Thanks for your invaluable education!!!!
Awesome info!!! As a natural hair salon owner/stylist, I wish more stylist and clients understood hair texture. I have many very kinky but baby soft clients and loose curled/wavy resistant hair clients. Visuals only tell the pattern and density. Touching the hair and seeing how water reacts to it tells texture and porosity. Thanks again for sharing!
This video, single-handedly, saved my hair. I never understood why I would use a 400° or 410° degree heat and my hair would ALWAYS be damaged and a little looser. I have FINE Natural hair, that's why!! :D I needed to use much less heat (and also incorporate deep conditioning). I was able to actually silk press on 360 degree heat and i had NO DAMAGE!! :D That's so crazy. Thank you for sharing this knowledge! 😍😍😍
Finally the answers I was looking for! Just got a long bob and I like how waves look, but I’m scared of damage and didn’t really know how heat protectant actually worked. Thanks for this!😊
I haven't used heat, beside bonnet dryer for DC, in 3 years. My hair is grazing WL, I'm 6'2, and my curls are intact. I'm convinced that a rollerset and a "1 pass per section" flat iron is the only option for me. Why aren't more b eauticians using rollersets vs blow drying?
Mel S Yes!!! I finally found a natural hair stylist that can and will do a roller set and a silk wrap on natural hair. No direct heat is used, although I've seen some videos where the stylist used a flat iron after the silk wrap to get that super sleek look. But I'll pass on the flat iron. I'm not sure why a lot of stylists don't use these techniques. Perhaps they're too time consuming and "old-school" for them.
+Katherine Miller you hit the nail on the head. These days, putting a client under the dryer for potentially hours is nearly unheard of because so many clients want to be in and out, or hate the dryer altogether, and several stylists understand that in our industry, Time is money, and the dryer heavily impacts the temperature of the salon and the electric bill. So it’s frequently viewed as being pinned to the Salon longer, and losing money on top of losing money. Our culture these days is very much a microwave culture, rather than a slow cooker culture.
GlamFam and that's 1 of the many reasons why I've been doing my own hair for years. I'm convinced most beauticians have very little knowledge /patience/empathy for natural hair. I miss the wash bowl, the stimulating styling, the attention but I will just do without to maintain my hair's health. Damn I miss that wash bowl though.
Mel S I feel you on that wash bowl. It's nice to be pampered and have someone else shampoo your hair. But, I agree that we have to protect our strands!
Great info 👍🏾. Could you please give photos of examples of what coarse hair versus kinky hair is? A visual would be so helpful . Thank you in advance 😀
That was very helpful! I'm still somewhat of a novice with techniques, so I prefer to go to a professional for anything that involves direct heat. I feel the same way about trimming my hair. I don't trust myself to do it correctly. The challenge is finding a stylist that understands natural hair. Fortunately, I did find a great stylist. When she left the salon that she was working at, I tracked her down on social media.
@@jacquelinevasileva8446 It might. Heat damage is just dehydrated hair with not enough protein. If your hair lacks enough moisture and you apply heat to it you can end up damaging it. So in a way a solution would be to either have a protein treatment or deep conditioner the hair right before you apply heat. Idk if it can prevent heat damage completely but it'll atleast lower your chances of getting it. Hack: stretch your hair in big rollers before you apply heat. When the hair is already stretched you won't need to use high heat.
I stumbled across one of your videos and immediately became a subby! U are amazing and VERY informative. I am a new natural hair stylist and your info has helped me so much to grow in knowledge and build my confidence as a new business owner. Thank you!
+Tiffany Dixon that is SO awesome! Thanks for your feedback and for subscribing! Welcome to the GlamFam and I am so glad that you are building your confidence! 🙌🏽
I have been reluctant of heat protectant for a while all thought I use it I always felt my flat iron results could have been much better. But since everyone seemed to use it I felt like it must be required lol. Watching this video really confirmed my thoughts about it all along!! Thank you!😊
Wow, this video is right on time. THANK YOU! The information about temperature settings based on hair characteristics is SO helpful! Blessings to you and yours!
"Fire still burns" lolol. I stumbled upon Carol's daughter products by accident at ULTA (they no longer carry but amazon does) but their shampoo, conditioner and mask completely changed my hair and now it doesn't break anymore. I have curly Caucasian hair that I smooth out to soft bends rather than straighten.
I use Pantene Multi Tasking spray because it has a leave in conditioner. I have no problems with it. When I’m at the salon the stylist uses a Nairobi product.
This information is so helpful for me because I was going to use a heat protector on my hair today. I don’t want to retain my growth from growing my natural hair. If you would, do a video on what product or products can be used if we want flat iron natural hair. I thank you for your expertise so much.
Your videos are full of information that we need to keep our hair healthy. I'm natural and I have been seeing a product called New Options hair straightener. Can you give your opinion on that product. It's suppose to be safe to use on natural hair. You break down the chemistry part of the products so well. I love you boo😍. I'm praying blessings for your family.😇
Thank you! I couldn’t figure out why the last couple of years when I straighten my hair it’s frizzy on the ends and it feels dry. Now I know when I started using heat protectant
Thank you for this! Do you still feel this way or do you like any of the newer “heat protection” products?? Also, PLEASE help out us relaxed/permanently straightened ladies with some tips or videos. ❤️ Thank you, I love this channel!
You're amazing!!!! Is there any way you can do a video on how to help curly girls maintain their straight hairstyles during humid months? I met a lady in the "hair store" who was asking questions about controlling the frizz in her straightened state and no one mentioned moisture and porosity. I don't really think there is a sure-fire way to avoid frizziness but would love to have that information if there is a way!
Looking forward to it! Will have a notepad in hand!! LOL! I've been really loving watching all the videos this month!!!! Planning to make my first wig this winter with a group of girlfriends using your new tutorial. Wish us luck!!! Best wishes!!!
I usually air dry my hair which takes hours. When I do use a defuse with a hand held blow dryer, I use the warm setting. In other words, I can place my hand in front of the nossle for an extended amount of time without burning.
I had someone at a hair school do my hair and they use AG Firewall heat protection to flat iron my bob. It has argon oil and I liked the way it looked.
This is so true. Every time I’m west heat profe tent because they say it’s good for the hair, I regret it. My hair feels heavy, stiff and like hay. When I don’t wear it but I use a leave in conditioner, it leaves my hair better
Yes, a heat protectant won't protect you completely from heat damage, it just mitigates the impact and damage. Yes, it's ridiculous to think that if you use 450 degrees on your hair it won't do any damage if you use heat protectant. However... I used heat without my heat protectant recently and I completely regretted it. Just use a good one and not too much heat, but there's no need to be a purist about it lol
Heat protectants do work for me compared to when I’m not using a heat protectants. It depends on which one you are using that works well. It doesn’t always fully protect but it’s better than nothing.
My hair has also done better with heat protection than without. Blowdrying w/o heat protection burnt the crap out of my hair. I tried different brands before finding the 2 that work for me. Since everybody's "fabric of hair" ( I ❤️that phrase) is different, some things will work for some people and not for others.
Sensible talking! After all man, if u follow some of these people on TH-cam u go baldheaded. knowing Ur hair and using common sense is key. Thanks for this video Mr Glam.
+Shelia Byers your best bet is a protein treatment, if you can gain any curl back, that will help. It usually won’t make your Hair completely turn back to your normal texture though. A lot of times, doing heat free styles and protective styles helps blend it while it grows so you don’t have to cut it off.

+Black Diamond I haven’t seen any wet to dry irons I’ve been impressed with honestly, I see if I can put together a detailed video for it. What do you love about yours, if you don’t mind me asking?
Teach em!! Yasssss for these cosmetology terms. Know your "fabric"! Soooo if you can try and review Paul Mitchell's Neuro Protect. Leaves great shine and no hold.
+knesmith23 I’m definitely open to trying it! I love their other products and I appreciate that the entire neuro line is supposed to be formulated with heat protection in mind!
So do you not use heat protectants on your clients? What do you do to prep the hair after deep condition before you blow dry & flat iron? Do you apply anything after or during the blow dry before the flat iron?
+doThatGWalk nope, I use leave in conditioner on each client, and if I am blow drying, I typically will use a small amount of of smoothing cream or a small amount of serum
What would you recommend for the occasional blow dry? I mostly wear my hair in two-strands or individual braids and sometimes a fro in between styles. I don't usually blow dry my hair for these styles but I want to get cornrows/stitch braids. How should I got about blow drying my hair for that?
This comment is completely unrelated to this topic (which by the way I took notes! haha). I really want to go to cosmetology school, concentration on hairstyling. But I work full-time as a clinical therapist. I really love therapy, but, I also see that my interest in hairstyling is growing more and more each day. Ideally, I would like to do both, work part-time as a therapist and part-time as a cosmetologist. Is it more beneficial to complete cosmetology school part-time, or full-time?
+Jamie Smith if working as a therapist is paying the bills, I would definitely say part time on School would be best, some Cosmetology schools even offer night classes, and they tend to finish around the same time frame of regular Cosmetology courses.
GlamFam cool! I actually am schedule for a consultation with admissions counselor at a Paul Mitchell cosmetology school next weekend so I will ask them about that and financial aid😁
GlamFam really? It looks promising! Like the curriculum seems like I’d learn a lot of things like braiding, coloring, cutting, and other things where as other schools don’t seem like I’d learn braiding other things
+Jamie Smith most Schools cover braiding, unfortunately not very in depth in most cases. For cuts and color, as well as product knowledge and marketing skills, PM is one of the best!
+Natalee F try a protein treatment, any of your disulfide bonds that weren’t completely broken will typically be strengthened and cause some degree of curl to show, although it’s never the same as the natural curl.
What's the best flat iron for natural hair? I've been using ceramic flat irons for year but I never get my hair straight enough. I've been researching titanium flat irons and I wanted to know thoughts on ceramic vs titanium flat irons.
+43227nv this really requires a full video, but in most instances, if the hair isn’t fine textured hair, I would actually recommend tourmaline. It’s a bit more effective than ceramic, while not being as likely to cause heat damage like a titanium.
I never used to use heat protectant but I kept seeing online that it is necessary by hair professionals. I hate how you never know what is true and what is not.
My friend is a hairdresser with a license and she said I don't need heat protection because of the hydration I applied when I washed.

So is it okay to not have anything on your hair prior to blow drying?....If not what should I use?
+Jamie Smith PM is usually a great school!
Wish I'd heard these tips a few years ago! Too bad heat damage isnt reversible. Thanks to you, I know better so I'll do better 😉
+Natalee F try a protein treatment, any of your disulfide bonds that weren’t completely broken will typically be strengthened and cause some degree of curl to show, although it’s never the same as the natural curl.
Wow, really?! Thanks! You're the best!
+Natalee F my pleasure dear!
As your hair grows you can cut it out/ trim it.
Hello, what about oils before using heat tools?
So basically, don't need an extra heat protection spray?
Then which products do u recommend using fr the ones who want to do heat styling?
You do need it. Just need a good one and to not use too much heat. He's being a purist and apparently hasn't encountered a good heat protectant
Can you do a video on rice water? I want to know if it really works.
I'm in college and I don't want to really spend money on getting my hair trimmed. How would I go about trimming the hair as a beginner ?
I agree ...marketing ploy like everything else ...and yes I liked how you kept saying common sense lol...I just use a deep conditioner...
This is the most informative video about straightening my daughters hair! 💯💯💯👑🤎🤎🤎 Thank you so very much!
GlamFam What fine texture tool do u recommend? What type of flat iron?
+doThatGWalk I would go with a ceramic flat iron on about 360 Fahrenheit
What's your take on natural blow dry creams? I think they make my hair feel gunky! Thanks for sharing!!

Connie Lee My heat protectant doesn't leave a residue.

Can Infusium23 be used as a heat protectant?
thanks for the tip. how often should I straightened out my hair. it's kinda hard to style it when is so poofy
my is long it comes passed my
shoulders as well
+cece queen I would try my hardest not to apply heat more than once a week.
GlamFam OK thanks should I cut it off it's to long and hard to do things to it.
+cece queen that would honestly be a decision based on your opinion dear, sometimes shorter hair requires more work, so it really depends 😊
What is a good leave-in to use?
how can I tell if my daughter has the correct moisture-protein balance in her hair?
+mztooskie if her hair is brittle and prone to breakage, it’s in need of more moisture.
