i just realised after years listening to this song it's not actually about a person but directed to depression
He mentioned it in an interview before that it is indeed about about an ex gf whom was friends with him and everyone after they broke up and things started to get weird and all.
i kinda interpret this is a different way, the girl he's singing to actually isn't a girl at all, he's using a person to symbolize his problems (self harm, depression, anxiety, ect) and how irresistible he finds giving into them ("i want you in the most unromantic way) ("torturing me with a beautiful face") and he can't believe how they are starting to show and clash worlds with his regular life ("i still can't believe how you look next to me") ("as you tie me to the bed..") ect. but at the same time he's desperate to protect his friends from that side of his life because he needs them and cares about them too much and doesn't want to risk them going down that road ("baby stay away from my friends, cus i need them") thats just my interruption
I agree and I also interpret him saying "stay away from my friends" as he doesn't want him to see his friends go through the same thing as he does.

I've stopped self harming but I think the damage is done. It's been 15 years of depression, anxiety, isolation, addiction and stagnating. I don't know where to begin healing.

I always hear this term of people with "just start" and if you really don't know, then start without knowing. It can lead into more depression but you'll learn from your mistakes. And in the end, your mistakes will create a better you. I'm glad you're doing better!

This song hits hard for me when my GF broke up with me a decade ago. As Vic explained this song: I wanted her to stay away from all those connected with me, especially my friends. I had the same thought. Because I also need my friends to get through and eventually move on. This song tells it all why.
My boyfriend and I are fighting at the moment, and this song really calms me down, because I know now that if him and I break up, I'll have /my/ friends to lean on when I'm a depressed, miserable mess.
