None of us will ever know the sting of having to live life seemingly neglected by & in the shadow of a father of world renown. We will never know the double edged sword of being Gregg's son with every mention of our name referenced by his father's place in music history. He sings like Gregg, he looks like Gregg, he sounds like Gregg.... the expectations alone must be crushing. It is not kind or noble to speak ill of another man. We don't understand his pain or choices in dealing with that pain. Gregg Allman's musical legacy is legendary even to include his offspring, where his prowess as a parent may not have been quite so stellar. I am always disheartened for Michael when I come across cruel remarks about him. Why don't you guys speak encouragement & prayers instead. He will be gone all too soon if he doesn't take better care of himself but I can't fault him for crumbling under the weight of the constant comparisons & expectations of being Gregg Allmans son. Billy Graham's son, Franklin, said it was only the hand of God that could remove the overwhelming burden of being the son of such a great man. Half of us probably couldn't survive under that weight. The blues aren't just a musical category - help him out - be kind.

I feel heartily sad in a way for Michael. I adore Gregg even in death. But he just didn't have a father bonding in him. Michael, you can tell is deeply touched by his father, still reaching it seems to touch Gregg in some way.You can tell he idolized him even though he hardly knew him. The tattoo on his left hand, Gregg has on his left hand, the flower. I have Greggs autograph on my foot.I idolized him. But.... I can see in Michael's eyes as a mom , pain of being neglected till at age 17 he stayed with Gregg. Before hand he talks of financial struggles as a child. Should not have been. I see a struggle to be Gregg. Be yourself Michael. Gregg is in your blood. No one can take that away. I do believe Gregg loved his kids. Just had a hard way showing it. I was singing "I'm no angel" on karaoke & I noticed you turned around to watch me and came to where I was sitting & told me "You did a real good job on that song, my dad did that song!" In fact you showed me your driver's license. This was in a bar/restaurant near I-275 & Ford road. Good job on that song too man, my brother who's been drumming for over 50 years has a band and they also do that song! Small world.

Sorry. Was thinking the same thing. I think Devon is the eldest of Gregg's children, and though he doesn't sing with the same pipes as Michael, forgive me for observing that he sings in tune and has done a powerful lot with the voice and guitar chops he has. Sadly he also didn't meet pops until his teens, but has a son, a family, a fine writing, recording and playing career. I'm not being mean, just praising Devon. We all hear our crosses as best as can after all.

Michael was born a few years earlier out of wedlock, but Gregg didn't know about it his ex girlfriend contacted him many years later. Gregg was surprised, tried to do the dad thing but the road called him and off the midnight rider went. it's in Gregg's autobiography "My Cross to Bear". really good book. as to Devon and Michael ever playing together, that would be awesome, but I doubt it will happen. they are on totally different trajectories.
