On an unrelated note, I thought this is the episode that proves the fact that when rick is not in Jerry's life or actively making him look incompetent with all his tech and knowledge jerry actually steps up and does what needs to be done, if you've noticed all the tough jerrys are from worlds where rick either died or doomed their world and escaped but unfortunately the episode went a different route

Well, people in the most desperate need for therapy are usually the ones convinced there's nothing wrong with them, and it's actually literally everything else around them.
That's great that you told us that about you patients. Really shows the two way respect that's deserved in therapy.
It also happens to every other profession as well.
Almost like it's human nature to push boundaries and figure someone out before spilling their vulnerabilities to said person, just incase they end up with one that likes to talk ill of them over the internet.
Maybe a lot of those patients are people with traumas who struggle trusting people in the first place, maybe for good reasons.
It's pretty human for someone to push a boundy to figure out who they're talking too and if they can trust them.
Isn't it nice they gave you said trust and came back? Shame you're proving them right for being doubtful.

Flawless reverse psychology. He’s an arrogant and stubborn man that insists everything can be proven by science and data alone. So what better way to get a man like that to listen than to challenge them?

Dr. Wong is one of the only characters in this show who can tell Rick something that pisses him off and not get killed immediately after
It seems she gets Rick's respect because she 1) doesn't pretend she's on his "level," _but_ 2) doesn't take him at face value and (helpfully) challenges him to prove himself, which others in his circles don't
Rick knows he can’t just kill/de-atomize her. Because doing so, would be to admit that he fears her or the thing she represents. Which would be that he has an irrational fear of losing control and that he needs mental therapy.
And he knows that she knows that. So it agitates him even more.
This is a problem he can’t solve by building a reality destroying bomb and that terrifies him, because all his other problems can be solved by mixing two illegal substances into a sentient gun-ship.
And if all you have is a hammer every problem looks like a lose nail
All of the character that pissed off rick have done so by telling him something that he already knows. He needs Dr. Wong to tell him stuff that he doesn't.

To be fair, space aliens did crash into her office and try to kill her. And not too long before that they also subjugated the planet. As someone standing on the sidelines, if it is from space and Rick wants to kill it chances are you also benefit too.

It's these simple, quick little interactions that get laughs out of me.
I like how she just casually identifies cosmic fluid at a glance.
Probably heard about it from Morty or Summer during their sessions. I'm betting Smith family therapist knows more about the multiverse than almost anyone on the planet.
I don't think it's "cosmic fluid" it's just a general Sci fi term she used to try and describe what's happening, I doubt she knows what it is
I might just be a general term, it's a fluid being extracted from some being that clearly isn't from earth and thus a cosmic being, so cosmic fluid, like the term unobtanium to describe any conceivable impossible metal

Dr. Wong is actually a good character to confront Rick's attitude and behaviors. She really does get the best of him. Amazing how this concept first appeared from the Pickle Rick episode back from Season 3, and this shows its potential.

What i mean is that while Rick is super smart when it comes to technology and science, he is pretty lacking in others such as more emotional things or how to properly interact with others.

I never did quite understand the hate the Wong character got. In my opinion her monologue to Rick was one of the best parts of Pickle Rick episode.
Rick's character has evolved so much, he's actually come to respect and trust Dr Wong to help him. Congrats to the creators for constantly giving respect to therapists
True but they also keep Rick being Rick, he goes to her for help but refuses to sit down on her couch because that's admitting to himself he's there for help, he refuses to take her advice because he just "knows" better, but is willing to take it as a challenge because if it doesn't work then it proves he's smarter than her (and if it does succeed, Rick got what he want and he could likely still twist it around that he's right because it was his idea to talk to her).

I love Dr. Wong. She is a very strong person actually. Witnessing all the shitstorm that happens around Rick and his family and still being their therapist? She is a good woman and a great professional.

Just the sheer fact that Rick went to Wong for her opinion shows how much he actually values her as a person

In universe: i think she at least understands who he is, and who his family is, and this is the most efficient therapist he can speak to. She also has challenged him before and knows she won't just "yes and" him

Dr. Wong “challenging” rick to help him was surprisingly galaxy brained. It’s interesting that she essentially learned how to speak his language through limited interactions

It's an interesting thing. Stupid or genius, if you know how someone's emotional mentality works and can appeal to it, then even a genius like Rick is susceptible to being manipulated. It's just good for him that Dr. Wong is actually trying to help him.

Deep down, Rick doesn’t want to be left alone. It shows in this episode when he’s at the bar by himself. Anytime Rick is alone he hates it. Even at the end when he does good and is about to keep the reason why pissmaster committed not alive he was about to be left alone and brought morty back to tell the truth. He wants to be left alone but hates himself when he is.
I think it was said that he needs people around him so he can show them how smart and powerful he is. Because if there’s no one around to glorify his brilliance, then what’s the point of him being so smart. And then he dives deep into self loathing existential crisis.
@@zacharybartolo5111 He's also a regular human being, and just like the rest of us, he wants to share his life with his closest friends, and he still thinks of Morty as his closest friend, but Morty betrayed his trust, so now Rick is probably going to feel even more alone.

@@9nikolai it was a betrayal on mortys part, but at the very least the family is sharing the blame for pissmasters suicide instead of rick being the one to isolate himself with that information like he always does. Also its not fair for morty to keep it to himself when it directly involves his immediate family i think
That's his problem. I mean for a guy who is critical of everyone else should not be making excuses for feeling lonely and self loathing. In the end, as shown, the family is better off without him.

Once again, it's great to see Dr. Wong back again. We had not seen her since the Pickle Rick episode and the Season 4 finale. She is such a great Therapist and Character helping Rick out.
Actually we seen her sooner than this. The episode of when Beth's clone returns to confront Rick about a device in her neck.

I was actually surprised to see Dr. Wong be quite firm with Rick when he later barged into her session with Goldenfold. I guess even she has her limits.
I respect that she cares about all her clients. I thought him being turned into a fly wouldn't be addressed and they'd just move onto their talk, and that would be the joke. I was so pleasantly surprised when she told Rick nothing happens until he turns him back and he needs to start booking sessions, I admire that.
I love Dr. Wong! Her interactions with Rick are what it's really like to have real chemistry with a therapist. I also love that shes the master of the only thing In the universe that Rick isnt.

It's no coincidence that she is Ricks therapist. Government knows of Rick and sent Janet from the Rocky Horror picture show to deal with him. It's who she became after the events of the movie
I'm soooooo proud of rick and his character development!!!! rick has slowly been improving and being a better person over the seasons and this is the first time we see his development so clearly.
Did anybody else notice in this episode was the first time rick called Jerry’s his son in law
Good Character Development my friend... This show deserves more credit for it's writers.
This is actually a very good example of therapy; you go through what's bothering a person step by step, crossing the "T"s and dotting the "I"s and being very careful not to skip any steps in their reasoning, and doing your best to find any assumptions that they're treating as more well-founded then they actually are.
Dr. Wong always sounds so trustable and profestional, If she was my therapist I would take her seriously and do whatever she recomends
I love dynamics like this. The intelligent but erratic character has difficulties relating to normal people, and the level-headed character shows them that they are overthinking and give them a new perspective in a calm manner. Especially when she barked at home for jumping in and turning the principal into a fly, pure comedy in my eyes.
It’s subtle but the way the meter on the machine is actually slowly filling up with cosmic fluid is a nice touch

I really like how this show presents other perspectives to Rick and they turn out to be just as valid and helpful for him.
Its a far cry from season 2 where Morty deciding to disagree with Rick and save someone almost led to the universe being invaded by the cloud people. He's just allowed to learn from someone else now

I now want her to become a main character. She and Rick work so well together in scenes, and it would be interesting to have a character that manages to oppose Rick on an intellectual level without them being a bad guy.
I think we get just the right amount of her, TBH. If they transformed her into a once-an-episode "what did we learn today" Twilight Sparkle MLP thing, fans would hate it, like, immediately.

@@darkmask5933 I would _love_ that actually. Most episodes end with Rick saying he learned something anyway, so he might as well be saying it to his therapist and make official and clear progress that we can follow.
And sometimes it can easily be used for humour only. Like, something crazy happens in the episode, Rick tells Wong and is like "I guess I learned something?" while she's just sitting there having no idea what one could possibly learn from all that insanity, and eventually she could have some character development due to Rick telling her all his most traumatising adventures.
My favourite moment was Rick checking in with Wong as he was PissMaster-ing and her telling him to keep going. Feels like Rick needed to hear that.
I hope they continue bringing Rick to therapy in the next season's
There's something really appealing about this concept of the smartest man in the universe opening to therapy especially after what we learned about him.
In general no matter how smart, tough, strong personality person have, human beings are complicated individuals and displaying that in movies and TV shows is the one thing that makes a show successful and we never get tired of.
It displays our own constant battles that we are all always facing

Ironically the smartest person in their universe is outplayed by a regular psychologist cuz of how much his ego blinds him, rick would be able to see through reverse psychology any day of the week but she challenges his thinking slightly and he ends up falling for it cuz of his ego

Rick was stunned last time he came to Dr.Wong. He’s not used to talking to humans who can converse at his level of intelligence.

I mean I know it shouldn’t be surprised, therapist deal with nurses this all the time, but it is just so cool how the writers were able to write this therapist. She does so well with Rick she’s so good at doing her job that she gives him therapy in a way that is helpful to him but doesn’t set him off enough to the point where he actually gets angry and leaves it’s hilarious
it's crazy when rick is slowly but steadily becoming the side character and jerry benefits from all of rick's change in character.
I love that this cartoon displays therapy as a good thing... instead of sh*tting on it and discouraging people from seeking help, like most shows do.

The sad thing is, that's typically what happens whenever narcissists meet someone who forces them to see a side of themselves that they ordinarily can't/won't acknowledge.
And it's typically not really love for that person at all. It's just love for yet another mirror that allows them to see themselves from a new/different angle.
As someone in grad school to be a therapist, most of Dr. Wong's responses are spot on!
