Terrifying Sounds in the Forests of the Great Smoky Mountains

  • Part Roar - part Scream - this is perhaps the best recording of these mythical creatures! Hear cracking branches and these Incredible noises nearby in the dense woods alone and you will never forget it! Do you freeze or walk faster? Rarely ever seen in the thick steep trackless mountain woods they are both immense and largely invisible in heavy cover. These extremely detailed and close recordings are of a once-extinct giant creature that again roams the mountain forests of North Carolina captured over several days in late September 2018. Some people now want to kill these magnificent creatures all over again.....Why?

If you watch the entire video you'll catch a glimpse of one of the creature's friends - not the one roaring. Recent research has found the process that makes these fascinating sounds is rather unusual.

Rocky Mountain Elk are being transplanted in eastern states where they were once plentiful. Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has been active in the program across many states including Pennsylvania, Kentucky, etc. Those are two bull elk calling to each other. You can also hear cow elk talking back. It's also common to hear the bull chuckle behind the scream to call his cows to him. Pretty cool to hear it's happening in eastern states. Hunting elk, and other large native animals of north america, is part of a larger conservation and management strategy. Each year hunters, anglers and shooting sports pour millions of dollars into wildlife conservation across America, more than all other Americans combined. Read up on the Pittman Robertson act and others like it.

No deer makes any kind of noise like that. A loud 'metallic' kind of noise and a really eerie high pitch. No, this is something else. I think it's a Sasquatch. A Bear would not make noises like this, and nor would a Wolf or a Coyote. It's terrifying tbh.

Having lived in the Rockies and done a lot of hiking and camping that sound is very familiar and quite beautiful. I love to hear it! It's of course a bull elk calling its cows. We had one of those bulls storm our camp one night while high in the Uinta Mts of Utah, bellowing and stomping. Pretty exciting! No one was hurt fortunately.

But I did have a bad run in with a group of Sasquatch in the Pennsylvania wilderness and one almost killed me when a grapefruit sized rock whizzed past my face.

It was a yearling, at least the person with me said it was. But it was huge. Far bigger than a full size deer. The one I saw didn't make any sound like this but that' the sound they do make.

I live near Kingsport, TN (north of smokey mountains). I just moved 6 miles away and the terrain difference is obvious. The former home was in an area where NO level spaces existed. My home was built on a steep area and the roads were treacherous in winter. Also, every form of wildlife was in that area (except elk) and could be seen almost daily. It's so odd that only a short distance away can make a difference in wildlife. I do live near a lake and state park now and have no clue if that makes a difference. We do see bobcats and herds of deer here that roam thru the planned community. The deer herds are 25+ strong and stop to eat many of our bushes. I LOVE Blowing Rock and Boone NC and visit often. It's a fairly short drive for me.

It's always fun to see somebody who has never heard and elk bugle before,it almost always scares the crap out of them.To me though,it's a beautiful sound, bringing back memories of sitting by a campfire,in the Rockies and listening to the bulls bugle all over the place. Some of the greatest times of my life, and most relaxing, especially after a hard day hiking the mountains hunting for them. The release of the herd in the Cataloochee area was a wonderful thing, now I go to the Smilies just to watch them,I'm so happy they are thriving and expanding, even to the point of seeing them in the town of Cherokee.
