Evil Doink was one of the best gimmicks ever in wrestling. Matt Borne was a great worker and made that gimmick. He should be in the HOF. That first evil Doink run was so good. Memory eternal Matt Borne.

Doink removing his own arm out of the socket and laying out crush is one of the best beatdowns ever.
Heel Doink was one of the most genius characters ever. A sadistic guy, who was a great worker, hiding his identity and using it to mess with his opponents. Amazing.
I totally agree! I mean when it became the multiple doinks it got too hokey, but yeah that initial run, Matt was incredible! In my opinion, he deserves to be in the hall of fame just for pulling the character off. Great worker, great character

It's fun to picture in your head Brother Love, Pat Patterson and Vince McMahon watching a Krusty focused episode of The Simpsons and it genuinely constitute as research and development.
One thing everyone overlooks when talking about Doink getting over is Bobby Heenan. Seriously after you're done watching this go watch Doink's first match and listen to what a phenomenal job Heenan does at putting him over and making him look like a legitimate threat and someone who needs to be taken seriously despite the gimmick.

That's what made Bobby great. I remember liking doing. And he was in WrestleMania the arcade game, and there weren't many in there. He was way over at the time.
I'll never forget WM 9 and the great Bobby Heenan exclaiming "it's an illusion" when Doink used the plaster arm
My sister was so on top of it that day. Doink cut that promo just before the match when he said that Crush was going to experience double vision, and she called what would happen.
Great episode.....Heel Doink (Borne) was the real deal. He was a great technical wrestler, had the psychology-aspect and as Bruce said, Doink was Matt's true personality.

39:08 Actually, Doink appeared on WWF TV sooner than 1993 Raw. He could be seen at events in late 1992, including the Survivor Series.
Doink was better as an evil clown. As a 10 year old at the time, I loved evil Doink. When he turned good, I lost interest in him.

Doink was better when he was Matt Borne. Quite likely that the character would have stayed strong if Borne stayed in WWF
I found his entrance music scary.

i think that was probably the plan eventually, but they didnt get that far. doink turned face seemingly due to parents complaining about their kid being upset, but thats just rumor.

Matt was so good as Doink. He was fantastic as a heel but once he turned baby face it just wasn't the same. A damn shame his demons had gotten the better of him and was fired.

I was actually a Matt Borne fan. Actually liked him in WCW as Big Josh. Was kinda confused about the Clown in the Crowd gimmick however when the Clown turned on Crush I knew it was on. Doink was a great character perfect for Borne as a performer. RIP Matt Borne

So I'm 35 years old. I started wrestling in 2006 one month after my eighteenth birthday. I have taught wrestling and I've been hurt wrestling. My neck is permanently injured from wrestling. But I can still say that wrestling is fake. People like to show mistakes that happen and Stacy it's not fake! Well a stuntman in a movie that is fake can get hurt when something fucks up. It doesn't make the movie real. The damage you take is real and wrestling. The wear-and-tear. But the fact is it is a fake competition. Not because the slams are fake, but because you aren't really fighting with someone. It's not a real fight. The competition in the fight itself is fake. You aren't really fighting. So no matter how much stuff hurts, the aspect of it being a competition is not real.
I usually agree with everything Bruce says but Doink to not only main event but to have a Circus themed Wrestlemania has got to be the dumbest idea I have heard.

I dont know if you watched wrestling when Doink first came in, but i do remember in the beginning, they wanted Doink to appear like a “clown” as far as actual wrestling goes, but then the wrestler, i think Bret, would realize Doink is more technically sound than he seems!
I liked Bret the best, and when he gave a reaction during a match, almost to say “I better not take this Doink character too lightly”, it really made me take Doink seriously!
A big top at Wrestlemania could have been legit as fck!
Imagine Doink winning the title at Wrestlemania. A big circus tent pops up; balloons drop from the ceiling, and Doink’s music goes from happy and fun to evil and scary as Wrestlemania fades to black!
@@HereIsWisdom1318 I believe that would have been more effective if Doink would have won the King of the Ring a year before then have Doink become "Born Again" and have an evil themed King of the Ring and have him defend his previous win against the new King of the Ring winner.
Doink was very legit, in a ridiculous evil costume. One of the greatest in ring over the top characters ever.
I agree 100% on Doink. One of the best characters EVER - and I've preached that for that years to many gaffaws... Hogan vs him in that BIG TOP scenario would be great. Hogan not working with him was just more of Terry's self doubt that's plagued him forever...so he went to Wcw...then we got the nWo so it's double edge sword. I do call BULLSHIT on the idea of doink. The reason ANYONe thought of this was from IT not JUST Krusty the clown. IT was some serious shit back in the day. Jesus his performance STILL blows that awful new film's out of the water... I just wish wwe would acknowledge Curry and his clown...that's the REAL inspiration imo. LOVED Doink though.

As far as HOF for doink. It would have to be osborne. That was the only time fans were truly invested in Doink. If Osborne hadn't succeeded with that character none of the other cast of characters would have ever gotten to play him. Heel doink, with the facial expressions and interviews, as well as good booking was doinks best run, and that was osborne.

Yes, he was involved in the face turn right up to Survivor Series. The new Doink (Ray Apollo) was first seen at Survivor Series

Yeah Matt Borne was the ONLY Doink in my eyes. He's the only one who was creating with the character, everyone else was only doing parodies of that. Matt as Doink totally deserves hof, but Matt himself deserves in from his work standpoint
Don't forget big Josh also had 2 BEARS he brought to the ring.
I saw Ray Apollo's portrayal, and as a fan (who knows that my opinion worth nothings to people like Mr. Prichard as Al Snow and the Understaker loves to throw at people like me) my opinion is that he was a great "good" Doink as he was funny.
47:00-when Crush did the stretcher job, i knew exactly what WWF was trying to with Doink, and i loved it from day 1.
I always cite the match he had with Mr. Perfect as an exactly. Its one of the most technically sound matches ever, and you would expect it from a guy dressed as a clown.
Listening to this one in 2023, it's something to remember how this show used to be before it had to get all sanitized for TH-cam aka Television 2.0
A Doink the Clown Undertaker feud would have been gold. Think of the mind games between them. Imagine Doink bringing back Brother Love to the WWF to get inside Takers head.
I went to a ghetto wrestling show at an Armory in Massachusetts in 98-99, bootleg Doink called The Hardcore Clown vs The Undertaker, but it was a fake Undertaker

They definitely should have brought him in as a scary as hell heel. Borne would have drawn serious heat. They have done something similar with other characters since. But I think it would have been more over in the early 90s. Especially since "It" was a big mini series in '90.

When FCW started up over off of gandy and South Dale mabry in Tampa, Steve Madison was the trainer of the women and Steve Kern was the lead trainer. I had been wrestling about a year and I just started working out. Steve Kern ended up taking over the building that we used for weekly wrestling shows in New Port Richey called Bourbon Street. It was a bar. Can you believe that they ran a partial every week as a WWE minor league system? Haha but Steve Kern pulled me aside here I am 19 years old and he said you know you entertained me more than anyone else on this show tonight. Keep working in the gym and keep wrestling and don't get any more tattoos. He saw me three or four years later in 2011 when I was in fire academy and I was in phenomenal shape and I was super tan didn't have any more tattoos and I was in the best shape of my life and he totally forgot who I was haha. But I got to do a couple WWE camps and I got some tryouts with TNA and I got to do dark matches with Ring of Honor and TNA an NXT. And I got the wrestle Steve Madison who also played doink the clown at a couple FCW shows.
Matt Borne deserves to be a HoF.Not just for the Doink gimmick but for what he and his father gave to the wrestling world.
And don't forget his high-flying son, Evan Bourne!

You forgot a Doink appereance . At Vengeance 2006 in Charlotte, NC Eugene [Nick Dunsmore] had Doink,Kamala,and I think Hacksaw Jim Duggan or it may have been SGT. Slaughter came out before the official start of the match. That was also the night that DX officially came back to the WWE. At that point I'm not sure who played Doink that night.

The irony of Doink is how everyone put down the WWF for being cartoony and a circus.And they actually developed a Clown character.That was cool asf until they baby faced him.Doink was awesome.And on a side note.It’s funny how they sat Savage for being to old but Bob Backlund was a prominent figure from 93-95

Doink left his mark in the business that is for damn sure. 1993-1995 was such a terrible year for the WWE business. You know it was bad when Doink and Dink who were both the best selling merchandise people in the business. Doink and Dink were the comedic relief that is for sure. I admit Heel Doink was good. Doink and Dink were so over that it wasn't funny. It was funny when the Brain got a pie in the face.

Albeit Yokozuna and gang stuffing Undertaker in a casket; let's resurrect the darkness.
A sharp contrast from feuding with Yokozuna; DOINK THE CLOWN is found fiddling around with the casket Yokozuna stuffed full of UNDERTAKER.
DOINK snoops a bit too much; opens the casket only for Undertaker's gloved hand to emerge; choke the clown and drag the clown into the coffin amidst purple smoke.
A minute or so later (after complete silence) the coffin lid opens and DOINK pops out and flops down to the ground below. His back towards the camera as he gags and laughs hysterically.
He limps away like a zombie. What the hell happened in that coffin?

A sick and twisted heel Doink vs a questionable Undertaker with Paul Bearer and urn.
The DEADMAN and Gomez face offense all of sorts from Doink. Punches; kicks; butt flops and plops; silly string; evil kids; balloons; water balloons with a finale resurrecting the other evil Doink from WRESTLEMANIA IX taking out Paul Bearer to grab the urn to summon evil forces to get the better of UNDERTAKER.
Doink delivers a fart shattering blow to Undertaker for the punchline; The Whoopie Cushion.
Doink does math (using a blackboard and chalk)
DOINK > UNDERTAKER with Paul Bearer a crying mess ringside.
The Doinks do another "mirror act" in the ring and run off with the urn.
What about WWF SUMMERSLAM 1994?
Instead of UNDERTAKER vs UNDERTAKER; it's DOINKs vs UNDERTAKERs...but the kicker is; after the UNDERTAKERs (purple and grey) destroy the DOINKs; both UNDERTAKERs go down on one knee to acknowledge Paul Bearer reunited with urn.
Only for Paul Bearer to jolt his head towards purple Undertaker; stand back to raise the urn...as the purple Undertaker turns against grey Undertaker. Purple chokeslams grey; purple gives grey tombstone piledriver with the R.I.P. pin.

OK so if Doink competed in 2 King of the Ring qualifying matches wouldn't that make hi m a title contender by 1993\1994 standards? WE all knew that he would most likely never hold a belt but he was at least a contender.
I don't think Doink was one of the "greatest" characters, because I don't remember him being a major draw in major angles. Just one of the more memorable characters.
