Wilander is much better than he describes himself . Such a humble down to earth champion . So much credit to the guy . And while not having great weapons , he managed the entire court, very intelligent adaptable , he could execute all the shots

@@keithjacobson1640for many years, the Australian open really was the very poor relation of the grand slams. It just wasn't considered an important tournament. If you look at some of the winners and finalists in the 70s and into the early 80s, there are a lot of names you won't recognise. A lot of the top players skipped it.

It "should not" have happened and it "should not" have continued into the late 1990s, it should be like nowadays (Swedish top players are complete abscent within the worlds top 300). The grass courts at the Australian Open were quite different to the ones at Wimbledon back then. They were quite a bit slower. Martina Navratilova described them as being more like low bouncing hard courts. They were also quite odd in that they were built on a slope to assist with drainage, which meant that you were hitting the ball up hill. It was commented on a lot at the time that it seemed to disturb a lot of the big servers, who often couldn't seem to adjust to actually having to serve up a slope. It maybe explains why both Boris Becker and John McEnroe never did especially well at Kooyong.

Good point. It's a mystery to me too. He was defeated about 3 times at Wimbledon in the 80's by Pat Cash, otherwise he would have made the semis. Cash was simply better on grass and was a natural serve - and - volleyer.
