They have SO many amazing songs. They weren't huge mainstream hitmakers, but they are so incredibly influential on a lot of bands you like (Nirvana being one of them.) "Debaser", "Here Comes Your Man", "Where Is My Mind", "Gigantic", "Gouge Away"....the pit is pretty much bottomless here.

Bowie was a big fan as he expresses at length in an interview worth watching, as is Radiohead who refused to let PIxies open for them at a festival, saying it should be the other way around. I lost a ticket to Pixies in '91ish when they had to cancel because U2 asked them to be their opening act. Would love see Alec Eiffel, UMass, Debaser... and more Breeders which was started by their bassist Kim Deals. Impressive you two! This isn't one of the Pixies more accessible tracks, and you nailed how special it is! I agree with all the other recommended tracks, and would like to add Wave of Mutilation as well. And lastly, being an old New Englander myself, I can attest to the fact Alternative music in the 80s & 90s was thriving in this part of the US with the likes of these guys, the Breeders, Throwing Muses, Jonathan Richman, and to an extent Miracle Legion. But it comes back to the granddaddy of them all, Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground.

Yup was in my 20’s in Boston in the 90s. Pixies, buffalo Tom, letters to Cleo, Tribe, del fuegos, mighty boss tones, Heritix, throwing muses/belly, Dinosaur jr, can’t forget “treat her right” and morphine .. such an amazing music scene in Boston, fueled by WBCN/WFNX and the “battle of the bands”

  • @noahgonzalez3

Nirvana, Weezer, and Radiohead were heavily influenced by the Pixies. The Pixies also have inspired many bands from the early 2000s as well such as Modest Mouse, Interpol, and Arcade Fire. They’re pretty much one first bands from the late 80s that set the tone for the 90s and early 2000s alternative bands. Kurt Cobain has even admitted that they tried copying what they were doing

As mentioned by the previous post...the most mentioned band by Radiohead, Nirvana, Weezer, etc., to openly say they were influenced by them and the Loud, Quiet, Loud approach to song writing, hence the title of their reunion documentary video...."Loud, Quiet, Loud" it's a real follow of them during their attempt to play together as the original members after 5 plus years. OK, so... once you get that thumbnail picture changed to the ACUTAL Pixies, we can talk about this band. That bass is being played by Kim Deal, and she was regarded as one of the best bass players in America at that time. She's also the backing vocalist.
This is a band from the '80s, but they were harbingers of the sounds of grunge in the '90s. The lead singer, Frank Black / Black Francis, and Kim didn't (and do not) get along very well, and that strife led to the breakup of the band. They got back together, but it didn't last, and Deal eventually just left the band for good.
They never had a huge hit song on the Billboard charts, but they were very influential with other bands that did make hit records, particularly Nirvana. I'm just going to list my favorite Pixies songs, starting with the "poppiest" one they ever made: "Here Comes Your Man" "Gigantic" "Monkey Gone To Heaven" "Wave Of Mutilation" "Debaser" "Allison" "Dig For Fire" "Gouge Away" "I Bleed" "Is She Weird?" "Tame" "Silver" and an absolutely awesome song that appeared in the film 'Fight Club,' "Where Is My Mind?"
That oughtta give you a good feel for Pixies. That entire album ("Doolittle") is amazing.

Im of the opinion that the pixies and r.e.m. single-handedly invented the 90’s ....kurt cobain LOVED the pixies; this song is super special bc its not exactly typical pixies, but at the exact same time it SOOOO pixies, NO body else could conceive of a song like this, theres no one like them before or since. & part of what makes those strange harmonies so special is kim deal, their amazing, unique female bassist who always takes their trademark high harmonies to a sublime place....now, “typical” pixies is what it is because of their unique way of alternating from verse to chorus back to verse in a loud/quiet way....many bands before them & even classical composers used loudness & then quietness to express something, but the way the pixies utilized it is pretty f’n special; its known as the “loud/quiet dynamic”....and thats really where kurt & nirvana got it from, thats why i say the pixies invented the 90’s....they are truly great, ive been listening to them for 32 years & i always come back to them....great reaction, more please, keep delving the pixies!

Kurt Cobain said that when they were recording Nevermind.
"I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it.”
The bass player Kim Deal, is also the second vocalist. She’s a legend.

One of the most unique bands you will hear. They were their own genre. So many good songs... You gotta listen to these at the very least- Bone Machine, Isla Encanta, Debaser, Monkey gone to heaven, here comes your man, Gigantic, Vamos, Where is my mind. Radiohead were asked if they would like the Pixies to open for them- Radiohead's Tom Yorke stated: 'No! That's just not right! The Pixies opening for us is like the Beatles opening for us. I won't allow it. There's no way we can follow the Pixies!'

One of my favorite concerts was when I saw them as the opening act for U2 on their Achtung Baby tour. The Pump up the Volume version of their song "Wave of Mutilation," is Iconic & I've always loved their song "Here comes your man," as well.

Yeah, they were another great "underground" 80s band. All of Dolittle is great. The 80s is my favorite era of rock music. Most of the stuff I listened to wasn't in the top 40. But was influential in what became the popular music of the 90s. The 80s sound was a bit more creative and fun. And in the 80s "alternative" encompassed many different sounds and bands, The Pixes, Fishbone, R.E.M., They Might Be Giants, The The, 10,000 Maniacs, and too many to list...

Never heard this before, either. The 1990s is my 30s, so too much life to keep up with new bands.
I like the music a lot. The vocalist might take a couple of listens, but not bad. I heard alternative music like this in the early 1980s.
For post-punk late 1970s alternative, try Joy Division "Love Will Tear Us Apart". A hit in the UK, on college stations only in the USA. After their lead singer committed suicide, they added a new member and became alternative dance band New Order. Huge in the UK, but a few hits in the USA too.

    - Concrete Blonde - "God is a Bullet"
