- In February of 2015, I began a life-changing trip part-way around the world sailing from Argentina to South Africa, via Antarctica, South Georgia Island, and Tristan da Cunha on the bark Europa. These are some of the sights we saw.

Cheers from Padre Island Texas , been a live aboard for 40 YEARS !!! 3 Sail 1 Sport Fisherman all 38 footers ( a bunch of European Sports Cars and Surfer Girls as well LOL ) we are day sailors , back to the Yacht Club at night to jump in the pool , hot tub and grill the catch of the day ... Andy Orr. Hello and good morning. Thank you so much for this video. Sailing a Tall Ship is something that like being a concert pianist or flying is something that I've long dreamed of. My only sailing experience has been a 32' Sloop on Lake Erie. That was just enough to whet my appetite. this video was truly lovely and the Europa will haunt my dreams for weeks to come. Again my sincere thanks for the opportunity to vicariously live at least one unrequited dream. All the best to you. Fair winds and trailing seas.
Thank you so much for your kind words! That’s great you got to sail on one of the Great Lakes. I’ve always wanted to do that as well. Tons of sailing history in those lakes. I used to dive Lake Michigan often on the shipwrecks and they’re quite the thing to see.

I wish I had the chance to work on board a sail ship.
I did work at sea, however it was cruise ships that I worked on, mostly as a photographer. I did have the chance to photograph some gorgeous sail ships.

Beautiful footage! And excellent soundtrack choice aswell! Going to Antarktica in a ship for shure already is quiet an adventure. But doing it in a bark from 1911 is even cooler!

Awesome footage - fantastic editing. Nothing compares to #tallship sailing. In 2018 I crewed on the barque, Elissa, out of Galveston Tx. Learned so much about tallship, square sailing......and myself.

@@aorr You're very welcome Andy! It's a great travel vlog you put together. Our family is doing an Antarctica cruise with Silversea's Silver Wind expedition ship next February. It will not be nearly as exciting and adventurous as your experience with the Europa. However, I do plan to do some tall ship experiences with either Star Clippers or the Sea Cloud first and then "graduate" to the Europa in a few years.

Mate, you've made a beautiful film. Well done and thank you. And congratulations. I work on ships and in Cape Town Harbour, and somewhere I have a few pictures of Europa in drydock in Cape Town from this voyage. I always get a thrill when I see a sailing ship in Cape Town....somehow the masts and rigging just look 'right' against the backdrop of the mountain, and I look forward to the day when the port is full of masts again. A beautiful film and thank you.

Andy you seem to answer some questions thanks I was curious about cooking in rough weather and also does a sailing vessel stay at an angle in a constant wind ? So the cooking is also leaning or to cook you take down the sails? Sorry thanks for being patient with my ignorance?
@@jamesrogers8501 Sorry for so tardy a response - yes, indeed, I have seen Picton Castle in cape Town. She was alongside and it looked like the mate was supervising the rebuilding of a broken topmast or boom or some sort of spar. Hand tools on deck, elbow grease, sweat....the old way. Impressive....

beautiful footage... great music to boot... really great vid... very well done & i reallyyyy felt that ccccold in the Antarctica... was wonderin' how many ppl were on the Europa & then saw all of 'em at the end of vid... curious.. where did everybody sleep... how much food didja take aboard & where were u able to refuel at... how many miles were u able 2 go on a full refuel... how long were yall on the trip... wut kinda problems didja have while on the water... so many questions so little time.... so glad 2 see the safety net there also... yall looked like u absolutely enjoyed the trip... thanx fer sharin' this awesome trip... take care.... ♪♫♪
Thank you, @MonaLisa Smiles! If I remember right, there were about 43 or so guests, and about 12 crew that stay with the ship. There is a low crew count because all the passengers help sail the ship on the trip. Four hours on, four off. Rinse and repeat. For sleeping, there are very nice bunks in the ship. I had four roommates, but others had two people to a room, or three, or four. For food, we used 80kg sugar, 60kg rice, 20kg potato chips, 180 hamburgers, 100kg chicken, 125kg beef, 160kg cheese, 2100 eggs, 700kg potatoes, 100kg apples, 60kg bananas, 120kg oranges, 500kg flour and a bunch more! Since it is a sailboat, we didn't use the diesel engines too often. We actually had a number of days without much wind so we used the engines more than some trips, but mostly they were used for working between icebergs. We didn't take on any fuel during the trip. We were on the trip for 52 days. No major problems during the voyage. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Andy, is bark the name or type of vessel? I have heard of Barques, but wonder why anyone would use this as a of name.
Slight correction, delete the of before name.
A barque, also spelled bark, is a style of tall ship with two or more square-rigged masts and a fore/aft rigged mast in the stern of the ship. It is interesting they refer to the ship as the Bark Europa but I think that might just be because it has a great sound to it. But the proper name of the ship is only Europa.

Not quite that high. It is actually a pretty affordable way to visit Antarctica. I forget the exact amount, but around 12-13k.

Beautiful film - awful music. My son Sune sailed with bark Europe in 2002 - 2003 from the Falkland Islands to Ushuaia, South Pole, Ushuaia, Cap Verde and ended at the Azores half a year later. He went out as a boy and came home as a man.

Gorgeous photography and documentation but the overly dramatic music when not sailing and while looking at penguins, seals and sea lions and ducks does not fit. Too artificial and distracting.
