I think one issue not discussed in the video is retail space. Stores like Target, Best Buy, Walmart, and others are providing less shelf space for video games so I think companies like Nintendo have to pick and choose which games they want available physically in a store. I think games that sell less than 5 million copies are less likely to stay on shelves for long. Like RGT said, there's a window now to get the physical games new before you have to find a used copy. I think this problem will happen a lot more for the Switch 2, too. Games won't get a lot of print runs before Nintendo says "buy it digitally now".
I can see Nintendo putting out “Player’s Choice/Nintendo Select eShop Cards”. This way they can still advertise those games as being available but it would cut down on production costs of those games being manufactured onto physical carts.
I think Nintendo will still do physical copies as Nintendo selects, Nintendo knows that physical copies account for a lot of their sales, especially in Japan who are smart in buying physical over digital.
@@Adamtendo_player_1 Except this story was about the North American Market & these games being available physically “new” in retail stores. Not once did he say anything about the Japanese or European Physical Switch Market. 🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔 👂 👂 👂 👂
Two reasons I can imagine happening here; 1. These games have slowed down dramatically in sales (no demand for product). 2. Nintendo creating a business model to see if games will increase in digital sales if they are only available in that format because this can be the determining factor that let’s Nintendo know if they should make the switch 2 a digital only system.
I just bought a Switch in the UK at Christmas and i've had problem finding physical copies of certain games too. Origami king is not available to buy anywhere and i had issues tracking down a copy of Links Awakening and Yoshi's Crafted World. Other titles like Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and various Pokemon games also seem to be in short supply. I'm glad ive picked up most of the 'big hitters' i wanted over the past month - but i am definitely getting frustrated either feeling like i need to buy titles immediately in case they dont print more copies, or in other cases not being able to find the game i want at all
Personally I think this is more down to shops choosing not to stock physical options than Nintendo. As a general rule Id say picking up a games around release is the best option before they disappear. Shop wise I find Smyths, Argos and CEx the best places to pickup physical copies of things.
Usually if there's a game I want, I buy a physical copy pretty soon after its release, but this is going to be annoying for games which I'm just waiting on a decent sale for. I feel like Kirby and the Forgotten Land will be going this route before it ever goes for more than like 15% off.
@colin8802 It was a gamestop deal. You know how those go, always subject to local availability. 99% of the time those turn up out of stock for me but that time I got lucky.
Luckily for me I bought them already, but I need more time to build my collection. In reality, it's about 5-10 games I need for my collection. @joepotalivo7051 I think stores nowadays just want to push the new releases and cut down on shelf space with games that just aren't selling anymore and that's been out for years that anyone who wanted it already has it.
We only have one main retailer that sells new Video Games in Ireland, and it usually just stops selling certain games after the initial shipment comes in. Games like Fire Emblem (all games), The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword/ Link’s awakening and Metroid remaster for example, are unable to be bought brand new in Ireland and have been for a very long time!
Here’s a theory: I think it may have to do with the Switch 2. I feel it’s a sign for backwards compatibility and these will be re-released as a Switch 1/2 game. Possibly with some enhancements for Switch 2. Sorta like how Xbox did for XB1/Series S/X.
Maybe. But it seems to me that Nintendo are going for a Disney Vault kind of strategy. Limited copy runs to keep prices high and to also not indent their eshop price profits too much.

I can see them doing the selects thing. Since they can't make money off the used games they could re-release it at or below the used price and at least make some kinda money on it still
They “always” do players choice / selects games for every console so I think there is a chance some of these will become that but I think some may just be cause they don’t sell well. I think it’s a mix of both most likely
some of those games are years old...and we're presumably winding down w/ the switch...so makes sense games, even first party ones are going out of print.

10-15 years for digital only is a bit of a reach. Companies like Best Buy are already getting rid of physical media of movies, it’s just a matter of time. Retail stores seem to be stocking video games way less, especially older titles. It seems they only have the newest games which to me spells doom.

If Nintendo was going to do the Nintendo Select/Players Choice they would have done it with older games like Xenoblade 3, Bayonetta 2, Kirby Star Allies. Those are games I may have purchased at $30 but had no desire paying $60 for. My guess is Nintendo is going to put these out as $69.99 titles with the Super Switch logo on them.
In my country they are all in stock at every single retailer. Maybe a shipping issue or my country does not much anymore so its the same stock. Or they are preparing for a re-release on switch2 with an enhanced version.

Seems like the upcoming switch nxt will be the last console from the big 3 console makers to include physical media. This will last for about 2 console generations until players basically revolt in some manner. Unless storage makes a huge leap in pricing, reliability, and longevity, physical media will likely return. (See vinyl records)
I hope to see an update/DLC to come to Mario Strikers battle league. I really enjoyed it on the gamecube and i feel like this new game is just to barebones to play.

If the aforementioned titles are not selling as much per quarter anymore, creating a new, permanently, reduced pricing option for them, could be a great way to boost sales, and make more money, despite them costing less. We’ll see!
Paper Mario: The Origami King and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 were already been out of print before and had become harder to find for awhile now. The latter was even going for around $100 on the secondary market some time ago. I suspect something like DKC Tropical Freeze and Fire Emblem: Three Houses have likely been out of print for awhile too (and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, frankly, even though it was not mentioned), though residual stock remained in the wild and has subsequently waned. As far as a lot of the titles on the second half of that list go, one can make the case that they could be confused with simply being out of stock, particularly as it pertains to Amazon. edit: Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition also looks to be out of print
I had a hard time finding xenoblade 2 last year when finally (better late than never), I wanted to try it out, & couldn't find it anywhere. It was only 1 & 3 that were in stores. I was very lucky to find xenoblade 2 at a retro store at a decent price (the usual $60)
I like the idea of a physical copy but honesty all of my games are digital, it’s just quicker that way I can turn on my switch & all of my games are there. I had donkey Kong tropical freeze on hard copy & I never played it! But now I maxed out of my 250 GB SD card so I am gonna have to order the 1TB SD card because there are some games like the 2 Zelda games I still don’t have but I ran out of space
That is weird I guess games like mario odyssey, spla2n, & xenoblade 2 could have that problem for how long they've been around. But games like FE engage, warioware & mario strikers is very odd because of how recent they are. I still see them in stores. Not all, but most of them still. I've especially noticed with xenoblade 2 since thats been gone for a while before this happened. I was very lucky to find it a retro store for the normal price ($60) last year So yeah, something odd is going on
I think youre thinking makes sense but also believe you're wrong. They likely are trying to discontinue to help save money but also for the Selects, not sure for win tho.
My thought here is that Nintendo doesn't want too many copies left on store shelves when the next system comes out, even if there's backwards compatibility. The better selling titles, like Super Mario Odyssey, probably still have tons of inventory at retail partners, and Nintendo probably knows that. Retailers also have almost all Switch games discounted right now (with most being $15 off MSRP), so this looks a lot like trying to move stock before the new console releases this year
I called four stores yesterday. Friends of mine. There isn’t a demand for the games and they can’t sell it for full price so why put it on your shelves? Especially when a new system might come out.
@@Viviorkogaming We'll the switch has been around for almost 7 years everyone and their grandmom's have the most popular titles. If they focused on some more niche product they would sell. If sale count is slowing and digital is winning its going to hit a point to flip. Could also be they're going to drop these when Switch 2 drops thus wanting no physical games left out there by the time of the Release date.

I'm surprised both FE games are running out of print considering how big 3H is and the fact that Engage only releases last year.
I was about to complain about no buenos dias aaaalll. Good job getting ahead of it!
Maybe we finally getting Nintendo Select !!!!
Where is smoke, there is a games industry fire. 🔥🔥🔥
I think that they are going to rerelease those titles with cross gen packaging.
If the aforementioned titles are not selling as much per quarter anymore, creating a new, permanently, reduced pricing option for them, could be a great way to boost sales, and make more money, despite them costing less.
We’ll see!
2:11 yeah, confuaion. Like the 8 different pokemon games being sold at the same time. Like that?
@@Gabezcubeall before the smash unveil in 2021 too
@@GabezcubeI found Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition in the same way
Just picked up Paper Mario @ Walmart yesterday for $40.00
The "Buenos dias, all" is back! Yes!
I am from 🇪🇬and I love your videoes❤
That is weird
I guess games like mario odyssey, spla2n, & xenoblade 2 could have that problem for how long they've been around. But games like FE engage, warioware & mario strikers is very odd because of how recent they are. I still see them in stores. Not all, but most of them still.
I've especially noticed with xenoblade 2 since thats been gone for a while before this happened. I was very lucky to find it a retro store for the normal price ($60) last year
So yeah, something odd is going on
This has been a thing for a while. I noticed it with Mario aces first.
Can't expect to sell $60 games for almost 7 year old hardware when amazon out selling it regularly for $30-$40 a pop. All the stores I go to whether is target, walmart, bestbuy... the shelves are empty and barren mostly and not even stocked.
@@b4rs629 , thanks for agreeing.
My point was there is no shortage. Buyers of companies are choosing to not refill the shelves.
This has nothing to do with Nintendo
@@Viviorkogaming Oh ya for sure. It's all just one big push by the industry to go digital. Games have been disappearing without notice lately online. One day it's fully stocked and the next you can't find it anywhere. It's crazy seeing it year by year getting worse.
That intro LMFAO
I love a good young and up and coming Nintendo TH-camr
Imagine knowing you are gonna lose a bet so you reword the conditions to something you know isn’t going to happen. Essentially backing out because you don’t want to play balan. Then being a big clown 🤡 and bragging about winning the bet you know you lost for years after.
Welp time to hunt down a few games I want
Where's the kid who's dad works at Nintendo to tell us what's going on anymore? I swear, suddenly it's like no one's dad works at Nintendo anymore.
My favorite sage TH-camr, but only talk about Nintendo 🥺
If sale count is slowing and digital is winning its going to hit a point to flip.
Could also be they're going to drop these when Switch 2 drops thus wanting no physical games left out there by the time of the Release date.
I’m not sure if this is confirmed. But I think Nintendo stopped doing Joycon repairs. I’ve sent a pair in two different times, and they’ve both come back unrepaired
I think the switch 2 will be released this year so they are already getting rid of the physical game catalog
This looks US specific, these are easily available in the UK from what I can tell.
Switch 7 Years old , and we dont have Physical Nintendo Select Games . Its sad .
I think it has to do with rebranding the games for the next system
8:57 FINALLY I have a friend
He’s definitely a Nintendo TH-camr!
I'm glad I got my copies of tropical freeze, engage, and odyssey
